David had been pleased when Mary Margaret had called up in about more dream stuff. He always felt a flutter in his stomach when he spoke to her, and now that she was starting to catch up to him, he couldn’t help but wonder what it meant for their relationship. Were they friends or did she want to try something more? He tried not to think about it too much as they spoke. When suddenly the other end of the line went quiet and he heard the sound of maybe the phone falling - maybe her falling - his mind went pretty void of all thoughts altogether.
When he couldn’t get a response on the phone, and no dial tone suggested that she’d hung up, he did the only thing he could think of which was go to her home. David had hoped that her door would be unlocked, and, by some stroke of fate, it was. “Mary Margaret?” he called out, looking around frantically.
If Mary Margaret had thought Regina turning the town against her had been bad, being tricked by the King so that she couldn’t have children had been worse. It had been short lived, but the experience had been horrible. Thinking that she would never be able to give Charming children hurt more than anything. If that hadn’t been bad enough, then Regina had poisoned her. Of course she knew that it would happen eventually; she was Snow White after all and she was doing it to keep everyone else safe, but it had still been awful. Luckily Charming had come and broke the curse and they should have lived happily ever after after that, but she knew better. She knew what was going to happen. Regina would curse them all, but Emma would manage to break it, bringing her and Charming back together again.
Upon waking up, Mary Margaret had fumbled for her phone on her bedside table and called David. She needed to talk to him. Needed to tell him about the dreams. With a sense of urgency, she had begun to talk as soon as he answered the phone and barely let him get a word in until she reached the part where they stood together, in the street in Storybrooke, watching as a purple cloud rolled in towards them. However, the conversation hadn’t gone much further than that, because almost immediately after, she began to feel the same way she had after she’d taken a bite of that apple and before the phone slipped from her hand, she managed to utter David’s name then fell back onto the bed as the phone hit the floor. The sleeping curse had bled over into the real world.
The sudden silence at been disconcerting, giving how much she’d talked and talked. David ran through the rooms until he found her in her bed, and a sickening familiarity struck him. Making his way to the bed, he sat on the edge and looked at her before memories of his first-aid training from ages ago kicked in. At least, he thought, with a large amount of relief, she was still alive. But no matter how much he tried to wake her, she wouldn’t move. His hand went to the phone to call 9-1-1, and David paused.
Weird things happened in Orange County every day. People dreamed things, and then they lived things. Mary Margaret dreamt that she was Snow White, had just dreamt about being poisoned by Regina, and now she was in a state like the curse. David hesitated. It seemed like a stupid idea. He knew, after, he’d feel like an idiot for even trying, but something was saying just kiss her. Taking a breath, David closed his eyes for a moment, then leaned over and pressed their lips together.
Mary Margaret might have been struck by a sleeping curse, but it appeared that luck was on her side that day. Had she not been talking to David when she fell victim to it, God only knows how long she’d be laying there before someone came to check on her and no one else would have thought about the curse, which meant she probably would have spent the rest of her life in this sleep like state, in a hospital. But luckily, David did think to take a chance and as their lips met, Mary Margaret’s eyes fluttered open and he inhaled through her nose as the curse was broken and she woke up.
He stared a bit, surprised that it had worked. And still, he felt some sort of embarrassment in the back of his mind, but it was outweighed by his relief that she had woken up.
“Hey,” David said, smiling at her but resisting the urge to stroke her hair. “You all right? You scared me, you know.”
Mary Margaret wouldn’t have minded if he had stroked her hair. She wouldn’t have minded if he kissed her again, but she didn’t want to scare him off, “I am. Thanks to you.” She returned his smile as she watched him. It was hard to explain, but after her dreams, it was like she was looking at him with new eyes, “I’m sorry. I couldn’t help it. Blame Regina.”
“Just doing my princely duties,” David replied, smiling more. “Can’t believe that actually worked. I guess stranger things have happened, though, right? Do you need anything? Some water maybe?”
As Mary Margaret watched him she was overcome by a feeling of deja vu and suddenly recalled the Enchanted Forest and David kissing her to break the original sleeping curse and it made her smile a little more, “I don’t know; it makes sense to me that it’d work.” Deciding to take a bit of a chance, she reached up and stroked his cheek lightly, hoping he wouldn’t flinch back, “No, I’m okay. Are you okay?” She could only imagine what had been going through his mind when she’d gone silent over the phone.
David ducked his head a bit, thinking he might be blushing or something. “I guess it does make sense, doesn’t it?” When he looked back up, he laughed a bit. “I’m all right. I’m alright now that you are. Maybe try not to scare me like that any time soon, though.”
Still smiling, Mary Margaret nodded, “I’ll try not to.” She didn’t know if it was because of the dreams or because he’d saved her life, but Mary Margaret was now seeing David in a new light, “I’m just glad that you found me.”
“I will always find you,” he told her. He was surprised with how much he meant it, too. Feeling a bit bold, David leaned over to press a kiss to Mary Margaret’s forehead. “I’ll make you breakfast anyway.” It was something he liked to do for her in the dreams, and he was pretty sure he’d enjoy it just as much in real life.
