While the beginning of classes was still a few weeks away, Jem liked being prepared early, which was why he had convinced Will to go with him to the campus bookstore to get their books for the fall semester. They might not have had their list of books that they needed yet, but so long as their course number was on their schedule, it would be fairly easy to figure out which books were needed for which courses. Holding two books in the crook of his elbow, Jem glanced down at his schedule then back up at the shelf in front of him, silver eyes scanning the labels under each shelf for the corresponding number, “According to these numbers, this book should be right around here.” He said, glancing over at Will.
Will wasn’t really the prepared sort, he’d have just as happily gotten his books the first day of term but Jem had asked him and Will had agreed. He agreed with a lot of things Jem suggested actually, but then he liked spending time with him. Nodding Will glanced at the schedule and then up at Jem, “Well maybe someone put it back wrong after looking at it. I’m sure it’ll be here somewhere” he said before scanning the shelves carefully.
“If they don’t have it now, I’m sure they’ll get more in. I can always ask the clerk to phone me when they get it.” Jem glanced down at his schedule again to see what other books he still needed to get then glanced over at Will, “Are you hungry? We could get lunch after this.” Jem had the day off so he was in no hurry to get back home really. “Unless you have something you need to do after this, of course.” Unlike in the dreams, Will had other friends in the real world. Other friends that he might have made plans with.
Will nodded, "Good idea. I guess since we're early they might not have all their course stock in yet" he said giving up looking and moving on to the next book on the list. "I'm always hungry and I've got no other plans. I'm all yours for the whole day" he smiled his charming smile.
Jem smiled back and adjusted the books he was holding as he turned towards the other shelves to try and figure out where he needed to go next, “That’s very true. I’m beginning to think you should be paying more for groceries than you already are.” He was teasing of course, because it was simply too easy to tease Will.
Jem was just stepping away from the shelf, towards the next one he needed to check when a guy, also around their age, pushed past him, knocking the books out of his hand in the process, “Out of my way, fag.” Jem was so shocked that he didn’t know what to say, never having been called something like that before. Sure, he’d been teased when he was younger cause he had been shy, but never anything like this.
Will laughed at the teasing but before he could reply a rude guy pushed past Jem and his words made Will see red. "Hey" he said angrily, grabbing the guys shoulder, "I think you owe my friend an apology and you need a lesson in manners"
Jem wasn’t sure what he had expected after the guy pushed him, but it wasn’t Will going after the guy. Then again, maybe he should have expected it considering they were Parabatai. Instead of retrieving the books that he’d dropped, Jem simply watched as Will caught up to the guy that had pushed him and grabbed his shoulder.
When Will grabbed the guy’s shoulder, he turned towards the Shadowhunter, “What, are you his boyfriend?” He glanced over at Jem then back at Will, “He’s the girl in the relationship, I take it then.” He laughed, thinking he was extremely clever.
Unfortunately for the guy Will wasn't in the mood, this guy had insulted Jem and continued to do so. Moving quickly he knocked the guy to his knees and had an arm twisted around his back. "So about that apology" he said almost conversationally but with anger behind it.
Jem’s eyes widened as Will grabbed the guy’s arm and knocked him to his knees. The sensible part of his brain knew that he should try to stop Will, because other people in the bookstore were beginning to notice that something was going on, but at the same time, he was rooted to the spot and could do nothing but watch.
The guy grunted in pain as Will twisted his arm, but he didn’t waver and instead of saying anything in response to Will’s question, he tried to push up against him and bring his free hand up in a punch towards Will.
Will moved but not quite quick enough, the punch catching his cheekbone but he didn’t let go, instead he pulled the arm he held tighter. “I really don’t think you’ve quite got the hang of this apologising thing”
As Jem watched Will get hit, he started to move forward, but at that time the manager of the campus bookstore and a campus security guard finally appeared and asked what was going on. Of course the guy who had bumped Jem and that Will had down on the ground tried to tell them that Will had jumped him. This angered Jem and he took a step forward, “That’s not true. He pushed me and….my friend was simply defending me.” Jem probably could have done the same thing that Will had, but he’d been too shocked to do anything.
Will explained what had happened too and the security guard escorted the guy out for questioning, the educational institute took bullying very seriously. Which Will had to admit he was surprised by but happy about. So as not to show favoritism Will and Jem were also asked to leave, for now anyway.
When they got outside Will looked at Jem, “Sorry. I didn’t mean to get us kicked out. I know you wanted those books”
Jem stopped and placed a hand on Will’s arm to stop him and turn him towards him, “Will, I don’t care about the books. I only care that you’re alright. You didn’t have to do that.” Jem wasn’t even sure if he would have done anything if Will hadn’t, because Jem wasn’t really the type to start a fight. That, as he had demonstrated, was more Will’s first instinct.
“I’m fine, really. And of course I did. Wasn’t going to let him insult my parabatai like that” Will hesitated for a moment before hugging Jem, “Are you alright?” he asked softly.
Jem hadn’t expected the hug and was glad that Will couldn’t see his face, because Jem could feel his cheeks flush at the closeness. It was different than the other times they were close to each other while sparing. “I’m alright. It’s only words.” Words that weren’t true. Not exactly.
“Still they were words he shouldn’t have said. He had no right to say anything to you” Will said, pulling back but keeping his arm around Jem’s shoulders.
Jem nodded, looking down for a moment as Will pulled away, “He’s an idiot. We shouldn’t even waste our time on him anymore.” Jem said, finally looking back up at Will once he was sure that his cheeks weren’t as red any longer, “Why don’t we go have lunch now. Give us something to do to take our minds off of this.”
Will nodded, his anger was dissipating now that they were out of there and Jem was far away from the horrid man and his cruelty. “Perfect idea, as always” Will agreed, his arm still casually lying across Jem’s shoulders as they started to move further away from the bookstore.
