When Rachel had let Portia know about the apron making Portia had immediately agreed to the little project. It would be a fun thing to do and working with Rachel would be nice. Portia was excited to see how the other designer worked.
She’d invited the other girl over since Portia had more space with her design room and they could just relax and come up with some designs to try out. There wasn’t a shortage of fabric around that was for sure.
Rachel showed up in the morning. She and Kevin left at the same time when he went to work. She’d taken the test, and it was negative. Of course it was. She wasn’t that sloppy, still… a little mini-Kevin? That was a heart-warming thought. Maybe in the next couple of years. She still hadn’t told him yet.
She’d brought some designs in her sketchbook, and was looking forward to getting her hands on some cloth so they could start. “I think we’ll need to add an extra layer of Scotch-Guard, or something similar,” Rach mused as she sorted through some clippings of different fabrics. “What do you think?”
Portia nodded, as she looked at the designs Rachel had brought along. “I think you’re right, I think that would work well with any design here though. I especially like this one” she pointed to a fairly plain design but it had personalised stitching and was very in keeping with The Pie Hole’s design.
“I don’t think we want to go overboard,” Rachel agreed with a nod. “I think this one’s good, too. Leave the more frilly, ruffley design for Baxter Bakery. That’d be cute with her sort of… June Cleaver look.” She pulled that design over, and grabbed a thick fabric. “We could embroider the names onto these. Say, down along the bottom? On the side?”
Somewhere Izzy was wincing at the idea of frills and ruffles but it was definitely a more Baxter design. “I absolutely agree” Portia nodded before reaching out to feel the fabric, “Perfect. Oh maybe the name on the left hand side going down and then the Pie Hole logo on the bottom right corner” she suggested, reaching out to sketch the idea onto a pad.
“Oh, I like that idea!” Rachel said, handing over the sketchpad. “This is awesome. I’m digging it. Okay, so, mostly plain, but with the words embroidered on. I’ll start on the aprons and you start on the embroidery?”
Portia nodded, “Sounds like a plan to me” she nodded, as she finished the sketch, “I’d say we make a pretty good team you know”
“Yeah, I think so, too.” Rachel gave the other a smile. “I think it helps that we’re both absolutely in love with what we do.” She said, and moved to the cutting table to start laying out pattern pieces.
“I think you have to be to do what we do” Portia said, “It’s a pretty demanding job and can take over when you’re working on a project”
“Oh, absolutely. I can’t imagine doing anything else now, though. You know what I mean?” Rachel asked, starting to lay out fabrics, pin and cut. She moved with ease, guiding the fabric and sewing gear into place as if she’d done it a thousand times. It would be easier with magic, but this would have to do.
“I completely know what you mean” Portia nodded, threading the needle, she could do it with the machine but she liked embroidery and hardly ever got a chance to hand stitch. She could make it more interesting that way, almost like individual signatures. “I’m not sure I would have been as happy on any other path”
“I know I wouldn’t. And now that I’ve been Dreaming? This is the only thing I can see myself doing.” Rachel was pinning and cutting with speed. Soon she’d have all the pieces she needed to put together the aprons. Then Portia could embroider. Rachel moved to the sewing machine to put together the first apron.
