It’s a small group of people.
Who: Peggy, Natasha, and a former Cerberus/Hydra operative
What: Getting Peggy into Hydra
When: Recently
Where: A public place
Status: complete!
Celes was ready to get out. Now that she had a way forward, she wanted to take it and disappear somewhere very far away. Perhaps move to where her friend had moved.
She waited for her contacts anxiously, though none of that showed on her face.
Natasha had picked up Peggy, and was going over the mission with her. “Remember, you can go about your life like normal. This cell is integrated heavily into the community.”
Peggy nodded even though inside she was freaking out a little bit she managed to keep it together on the outside. It was usually how it went with missions, especially at the beginning, that she would think she wasn’t capable of anything and things were going to go terribly wrong. That’s how she knew she was good at her job because she wasn’t to that overconfident stage. “Got it. That makes things slightly easier. I’m just a normal Brit living in the States that doesn’t know how to pull a double agent mission off.” That comment earned a wry grin to herself.
It made Nat grin too, a sly smile that slowly spread across her face. “Da, you’ll do fine. You’re harder than people give you credit for, but that is always the case for people like us. We are almost there. Celes will be the blonde woman who stands too tightly. I think she is fraying, and this may be our only chance to get you in.”
She didn’t want any mistakes, and the sooner they had someone reliable in, the better.
“That’s only because no one has actually seen me in action. We are usually underestimated more than we should be,” such was the life of a female spy, but Peggy always took enjoyment when she proved to people how good of a spy she truly was. Nick was one of the few that sensed how good she was and immediately brought her into the fold. Now, if she could convince Steve that she was capable she would be able to rest a little easier, “Well, if it helps her get out then even better. I am just ready to get in there already and start trying to bring it apart.”
“We can use that though. Men are assholes. That’s an advantage we can take. We’re almost here.”
Nat pulled into the parking lot of a little cafe. Celes was waiting inside, nursing a coffee, and she looked up when she saw the beatup clunker that Nat was using.
“That’s her.” She nodded towards the blonde in the window. “Good luck. I’ll see you around, but it’ll probably be a few months before we welcome you into the office again.” She smirked.
“Thanks, Natasha,” Peggy turned towards the woman and gave her a warm smile, “I’ll just have to sneak into my office. My favorite mug is in there.” There was a soft chuckle at the end of her statement before she got out of the car and made her way over to where Celes was. She made sure to keep a straight face as she walked over and took a seat across from her, “Hello there.”
“Hello.” Celes smiled at the other woman, and clasped her hands on the table in front of her. “Thank you for meeting me. Peggy was it? I’m Celes.”
“It is and nice to meet you as well, Celes,” Peggy reached up to brush some hair out of her face as she took a moment to study the other woman. She could see the tired wrinkles around her eyes that indicated that she really truly wanted out of this. It made Peggy a little wary to go into this, but she had to do her job, “So, what do I need to know?”
“It’s a small group of people. Most of them I hand picked myself. Typically we move money and objects, and put together some of the electronics. I’ve...sabotaged more than one detonator.” Celes picked up her mug and took a sip. “We can integrate you into the group. None of them are leaders and it wouldn’t be the first time someone from outside was brought in.”
“So, I should play off being a background character instead of a leader? Moving doesn’t sound too difficult. How are we getting you out? Mission gone wrong?” Peggy was curious to see how they would get her out if the group was as small as she made it seem. Her disappearance wouldn’t be taken lightly, but Peggy would try to cover up what happened the best she could.
“I’m thinking we’ll have to make it look...like a really convincing death.” Celes looked down into her mug. “Once you’re settled, of course. We’ll want a week or two for you to adjust, and there’ll be something coming we can sabotage and use to have me dead.”
“Sounds like a good plan to me,” Peggy nodded. It was sound and made sense. The coming up with what they can use to create her death was the hard and interesting part. It wasn’t her first fake death scenario, but each one was increasingly harder to pull off. The element of this tight knit group would make this one a challenge, but just meeting Celes made Peggy know that together it would work.
“Thank you. I know where I can go, once all is said and done. But I want to make sure that we can do something to shut them down. I was sold a bill of goods and I’ve been stuck ever since.” Celes’ hands weren’t clean by any means, but her guilt kept her up at night.
“I will do my best to make sure they are shut down. No one wants them around and I certainly don’t like seeing people taken to their breaking point because of bullies like them,” She was serious about making sure villains didn’t get to rule to world. It was a righteous notion, but Peggy felt good in the fact that she was helping make it happen, “Let’s go over the team and tell me what I need to know.”
Celes nodded. She had a brief description of each person. There were six in total, including herself, and each was an expert in one field. Combined, they made for a deadly combination.
"There's one more thing you need to know. Cerberus is in a state of flux. There's been a lot going on behind the scenes. Multiple factions, there was even violence. The old guard, set up under Jack Harper, gave way to some new people. They're calling us Hydra now."
She didn’t know how much the Agency knew of those, but she wanted to get that passed on. she figured Natasha was listening in, anyway.
"I heard rumors about that. Do you have an idea of a time frame for total takeover from them? And should I be worried about violence from your team?" Fury's nightmares were coming true with Hydra officially confirmed and more violence going on internally. It was something Peggy was prepared for, but it was always good to know early if it would be a bigger issue. Hopefully this team would be more on the quiet side.
“By the end of November at the latest,” Celes confirmed. Her hand was shaking as she put her cup back down. “I believe it’s going to get nastier before it gets better. After the bombing, the response made them back down. I’ve some word that they’ve been experimenting biologically. I don’t know if that means biological agents, or super soldiers.”
“Neither is good,” Peggy admitted with a deep frown on her face. Fury was going to go crazy when she came back with this information. It didn’t leave them a lot of time to try and take it out from the inside, but even a little infiltration was better than nothing at all, right? There was a tiny bit of fear inside Peggy that she would have to deal with some of this ‘nastier’ stuff that may happen in the future, “Okay, so we’ve got most of that horrible information out of the way. Anything else I should know? And when did you want me to get started working with the team?”
“I think that’s roughly it,” Celes said. She felt a profound feeling of peace. “And if you’re free tonight, we can make the introductions.”
"I am free, so let's get this show on the road," she commented and could feel some butterflies in the pit of her stomach. It was moving quickly and she was about to step into the snake's nest, but it had to be done. More better time than the present.
