Newt was actually in his office for once. He liked to try to avoid keeping his office hours because he really hated dealing with undergraduates, but his paperwork had piled up so much that he could no longer avoid it. So there he was, trying to decipher his own messy handwriting so he could make something useful out of his lab notes, but his heart wasn’t really in it.
It was partly the fact that he was afraid of being accosted by an undergrad, but also because he still hadn’t found Ghidorah. It was stupid, he knew it was, but that lizard really was the closest thing he would probably ever have to having a child. He loved that thing and shamelessly spoiled it with crickets, greens, and fruits. And now the fat useless thing was out on its own with no one there to watch over it and make sure it was fed. It would probably be dead within the week. Less if someone stepped on it. He couldn’t bear to think about that.
And so he sighed, settling into a ridiculous state of lizard-induced melancholy as he once again tried to tackle his lab notes.
Severus could absolutely understand the sentiment about hating dealing with undergraduates. He would never have been a teacher in his dreams if it wasn’t for… well. And the idea of teaching students in this world was laughable. Especially now that his personal life was falling apart.
But he found the large lizard while he was on campus, and remembered the post on Valarnet asking if anyone had seen it. It didn’t take long for him to find the gentleman’s office, and he knocked on the door, holding the lizard along one arm as he did so. “Professor? I think I’ve found something that belongs to you.”
Newt groaned when he heard the guy walk into his office. Probably an undergrad by the sound of it; no one else called him professor but the undergrads. And he certainly wasn’t in the mood to deal with one of them today.
“Can it wait?” he asked impatiently looking up.
But it wasn’t and undergrad standing in his doorway. Or at least, if it was, it was one of those old late-in-life college students. He could deal with those better than he could the 18 year olds. At least they were serious about their work.
But that wasn’t the only surprise in the doorway. Along the man’s arm was a certain familiar fat face.
“Ghidorah!” he cried out happily, knocking over precariously piled stacks of paper and various office supplies as he stood up and vaulted toward the door. “You found him!”
“It’s possible he was looking for you. I was up on the fourth floor in the chemistry lab giving a guest lecture to a class of graduate students when I noticed him coming out of a supply closet.” That was a long sentence for Snape. He found he was nearly winded by the end of it. As he spoke, he held out the reptile to the other man. “Then I recalled your post on Valarnet, and it was a simple task of looking your name up in the staff directory to find your office.”
Newt was only halfway listening, too busy retrieving his lizard. He was running a finger along the top of his head and speaking to him the way most people would to their dogs or cats.
“I missed you, buddy,” he said. “Don’t ever run away like that again. The crickets are too fast for you to catch out there, lard-o. I was so worried. We gotta get you back to your tank in the lab, yeah?”
The lizard crawled up Newt’s arm to happily perch on his shoulder.
“Thanks dude,” he said, looking back up to the man in front of him. “The chemistry lab, huh? I don’t think I’ve ever met you before. Granted, that’s because I’m mostly in the bio lab, but you know.”
Severus couldn’t help but break into a smirk at the sight of the man and his lizard. It was heart-warming. Sev himself wasn’t all that keen on animals, but he could understand how people might be. He had children, not animals.
“Severus Snape,” he said, holding out a hand to the man in greeting. “I give guest lectures from time to time.”
Newt took the proffered hand and shook it. “Newt Geiszler, but I guess you already knew that. And this little guy is Ghidorah. Pleased to meet you.”
Ghidorah’s expression was neutral, but Newt was pleased enough for the both of them, although it was really more because Snape had brought him his lizard than it was that Snape was gracing him with his presence.
“You had a lecture today? What was it on? What do you do?”
“And you,” Snape said. He took a moment to glance around the man’s workspace. Not quite curiously, but interested enough. “I work in pharmaceuticals. When I first moved back to the area, I was contacted by a professor in the chemistry department to come and lecture his class about opportunities for advancement in the field. I’ve come back every semester since.”
