What John’s bored
Status: Complete
Rating: Low
John was bored. B. O. R. E. D. He sat back in his comfy chair, looking at the ceiling and thinking while tossing a ball up at the ceiling and catching it in one hand. Of course he was thinking about important things. Like beer. And women. And String Theory. And football.
Sam wasn’t bored but she was looking for John. She had been looking at her calculations for the Stargate and needed a second set of eyes and since John’s dreams were somewhat related to her theory she figured he could take a look. Entering his office she grinned, “Hard at work Professor?”
Missing a catch, John fumbled to keep the ball from spilling out of his hands and onto the floor of his office as he turned at the sound of her voice. “Sam? Jeez woman! Don’t you knock anymore?” he asked, placing the ball on his desk. “I could have been doing anything,” he grumbled.
Sam laughed, “Sorry” she said, “Though considering your students could come in at any time I’d hope you weren’t doing anything too odd” she teased as she took a seat.
“You’ve got a dirty mind, Dr Carter,” John laughed, looking up at Sam with a wicked look in his eyes. “What brings you to my domain on this fine day then?” he asked, picking up a pen and leaning forward on his desk.
"I said odd" Sam defended herself, "You don't know what that meant I was thinking. Actually I wanted to pick that big brain of yours, since we share that common dream interest of wormholes and things"
“Ooo, wormholes? What have you got for me?” John asked enthusiastically, pulling his chair closer to the desk and trying to get a look and see if she had anything in her hands.
“Well, take a look at my workings out so far” Sam said moving closer and spreading open her calculation book on his desk.
“Ok,” John smoothed a hand over the sheets of paper as he started to read. “Sam, this is amazing,” he commented, flipping over a page. “The power requirements for this is going to be immense, have you considered how you’d generate that much power?” he asked, looking up at her.
“Not yet but Jane has links at Stark so I was hoping Tony might be able to help out with that” Sam replied, “I can’t think of a way to generate that level of power without causing a blackout statewide” It had been bugging her since she’d started working on the project.
“Well there’s nothing I know of on this planet that can generate the quantity of energy you’d need at a sustained level to maintain a stable wormhole,” John shook his head, flipping over another page. “But if there’s anyone likely to have the patent for something that could or be in the know about what’s out there then it’s Stark. You think Jane’ll be able to get you a meeting with him? He’s notoriously difficult to pin down.”
“He is but I’m hopeful. He’s really the only chance we have unless something appears from my dreams. I’ve kind of been hoping for that but so far nothing has happened” she smiled ruefully. “But he chose Jane himself so I’m hoping she might have some luck”
“Hand-picked by Stark? She must be good,” John nodded, impressed by the honour. “What was she researching under you?”
“Extremely. She’s the most talented student I’ve seen in a long time” Sam told him, “She was looking into Einstein-Rosen Bridges, fascinating work and actually has ties to what I’m working on obviously”
“Obviously,” John grinned. “How did two people with such remarkably specific but common interests come together in one place?” he wondered idly. “There’s something about this place, Sam. I don’t know what it is, but there’s some weird shit going down here,” he gave a little chuckle.
“Oh it’s definitely this place” Sam agreed, “Something odd is going on, the dreams for a start. Oh, did I tell you that you have a face twin in mine? A Cameron Mitchell, he’s the spitting image of you”
“A face twin?” John laughed as he sat back and looked up at her. “I don’t think I’ve ever heard of that before. Tell me, is he exactly as devastatingly attractive as me too?” he raised his eyebrows suggestively at her.
“He is” she confirmed, “Honestly it’s an effort not to swoon each time he enters the room. In fact he might even be more devastatingly attractive than you” she teased with a wide smile.
John was grinning proudly right up until the point she said his face-twin might be more handsome than himself. “If you ever meet him I may have to kill him,” he dead-panned, chuckling afterwards. “Do I get all the girls then? In your Dreams I mean,” he winked.
Sam laughed then, “I’m not sure you could. He’s too pretty to hurt” she teased him. “Not exactly. We’re all rather too busy for that sort of thing”
“Too pretty to hurt?” John put a hand to his chest and pretended to act hurt. “Sam, you wound me!” he told her dramatically. “And seriously, too busy for girls? What is this guy? A monk?”
Sam laughed, “Sorry. If it helps you’re too pretty to hurt too” she winked, “No, we’re just all busy saving the world a lot and he’s kind of like an excitable puppy as we go from planet to planet”
John grinned back, pleased with himself at the compliment. “I like you again, you can stay,” he joked, before shaking his head in wonder as he looked at her. “This Stargate is amazing Sam, and if anyone can get it working it’s you,” he said confidently.
She knew he’d like that, Sam hadn’t worked in a male dominated world for so long without picking up some skills in flattery. They worked well. “Thanks John but I know it won’t be me alone. I’m relying on you and Jane to spot things I don’t”
John pretended to salute her in acceptance of the duty. “You got it boss.”
