Elizabeth smiled at the barista as the girl handed her the coffees and headed back over to sit with Daniel. It had been a long while since they’d been in the same country, let alone had a chat so there was a lot to catch up on. She placed their cups on the table and sat down opposite him in the window seat they’d manage to acquire. “So, how have you been?”
Daniel was glad to have the chance to catch up with Elizabeth again, the two of them had gotten on well when they had met previously. Unfortunately, with how busy the two of them were it seemed that they never got to see each other which was a shame. Now though, it seemed that both of them would be working at the same University, which to Daniel seemed like some sort of miracle. He was grateful to have someone he considered a friend here though, it would make things easier. Though he was looking forward to getting to know his co-workers, he was never that good but at least they had linguistics in common.
“I’ve been well,” he said with a nod. “Busy - it feels odd to be based in one place rather than moving around but I suppose it will be good for awhile. Truthfully, I was getting sick of always being on the go. I’m not as young as I used to be,” he said with a grin. “What about you?”
“Same,” Elizabeth smiled at him. “It takes a little while to get used to being in one place constantly but it’s done wonders for my social life,” she joked as she reached over for the sugar. “Although I do get the occasional call to run off to the other side of the world if the UN need me, so it’s still a little like old times,” she shrugged, putting a spoonful of sugar in her coffee and stirring it. “Have you met many of the faculty yet?”
“At least you still get to do that,” he said with a nod of his head. “I can’t imagine you ever giving that up, you did enjoy it a lot. A social life, that will certainly be kn ew - I don’t think I have ever had one of those,” he only half joked. Daniel had always been a rather anti-social personal, preferring the company of books and then the internet over people - though he always preferred the former over the latter it was still incredibly helpful at times. “I’ve met most of the people in the linguistics department I believe but I know there’s still many more that I am yet to met,” he told her. “I would have realised you were here if that wasn’t the case.”
“Well, it’s not your fault,” Elizabeth grinned, re-adjusting in her seat. “I’m fairly difficult to pin down. You know me, I’m lost if I’m not doing something,” she joked. “It’s not something I plan on giving up anytime soon, but I’m not as involved as I used to be. I had to take a step back after the incident a few years ago,” she gave a little shrug.
“True but then, perhaps that is what drew us together. I’m not exactly the best at that sort of thing either. I mean I just found a month old voicemail on my phone last night,” he half joked - the voicemail part was completely true and he did move around a lot so… It wasn’t his fault he was bad at keeping in touch, he had more important things to do. “I understand,” he said with a nod. “You’re alright now though aren’t you?” he asked. He had heard about the shooting and had actually reached out to Elizabeth then instead of just randomly running into her when they had the chance.
“You always did get carried away with your work,” Elizabeth teased with a smile regarding his voice mail. “Yes, mostly. I think I’ve recovered physically from it fine but...I still have moments. I mean it’s not like living here has been much of a picnic health-wise either but…” she shrugged and looked out the window at the passersby and imagined Leonard standing across the street waving at her as if he were here to meet her. “I love it here. I have my best friend, partner and an incredibly rewarding job. Well...jobs if you count the UN work too. And you’ll never guess what, but the bodyguard who took down the shooter that day is here too,” she shook her head slowly. “This place is amazing, you’re going to love it here.”
Daniel snorted slightly as he tried to laugh and take a sip of his drink at the same time - by accident of course. Either way it didn’t end prettily. “Oops,” he said rather sheepishly. “Well not much to do when the people I like to spend company with go and abandon myself,” he teased her in return. “I’m glad you are recovering despite everything and I am glad you like it here. Sam is here?” he asked surprised. Elizabeth had mentioned Sam before in their conversations. “Partner?” he asked raising his eyebrow questioningly, Elizabeth hadn’t mentioned anything about someone. “I hope so, I’m enjoying it so far. Especially knowing you are here,” he told her truthfully.
Elizabeth laughed as he snorted on his coffee, passing him some napkins from beside her arm. “We’re both free spirits Daniel, you of all people should understand the need to fly and be free,” she joked. “Yeah, Sam works at the university too, she’s a professor in the physics department. We were living together until last month, when I moved out to live with my partner Leonard and his daughter,” she smiled happily. “He’s a doctor at Irvine General,” she told him, picking up her cup. “Well I’m most certainly glad you’re here too, you should get together with Sam. Once you start Dreaming you two will have so much to talk about,” she said, raising her eyebrows and cup at him.
“Oh I know, I don’t think we’ll ever be in one place for long. We’d probably go crazy if we did. We need to travel and always will.” Daniel grinned at her, “Thanks for those by the way,” he said cleaning up the last of the coffee. “Oh?” he asked curiously. “Any more hints about her? You know I don’t like being teased,” he faked puted then. “I’m looking forward to meeting him, he’ll have to pass my test. I’m not going to have him hurt you though given it is gotten to that stage I’m sure Sam at least approves of him.”
“You’re welcome,” Elizabeth smiled. “Hints about Sam? Not really, I mean we’ve been having some pretty weird Dreams since we came here and I think you’re going to be very interested in them. You should probably talk it out with her though, I wouldn’t want to give anything away,” she winked at him over the rim of the cup. “I’ll sort out dinner round Sam’s next week and we can all catch up, how does that sound?” she suggested. “Leonard’s been through his fair share of tests already,” she told him, her tone a little more serious than before. “Sam loves him and his daughter, she’s been tutoring her this past year. He comes by the university sometimes for lunch so you might run into him. He won’t be hard to miss; tall, dark and handsome with an occasionally gloomy outlook on life but a fantastic smile when he let’s his guard down,” she told him, a happy smile splitting her face.
