Elsa had returned to work only to make the apology announcement after she'd frozen the OC then she'd brought in temporary weather forecasters. Other than Anna and Kate she'd seen very few people, which was why it had taken her a while to accept Elphaba's invitation to coffee. Only Elsa had requested they do it at the house, she wasn't quite ready to face a crowded coffee shop yet.
When the knock at the door came she moved to open it and greet her friend, "It's good to see you"
“Hey Elsa, how’s it going?” Elphaba asked carefully, a small smile on her face. She didn’t want to be too pushy or smothering, but she was worried about her friend. Having lost her mother at a very young age and a father whose distrust and disdain for you bordered on the excessive, Elphaba knew what it felt like to lose family.
“I’m doing okay” Elsa replied, “Really” she added at her friends dubious look. “I’m coping anyway. Kate has been a wonder and Anna and I had a little heart to heart and cleared the air a little”
“Good, I’m glad,” Elphaba smiled, hoping it was a comforting look. “Would you mind if I came in? I brought cake,” she held up the cling film wrapped package in her hands.
“Oh no of course” Elsa said moving back from the door, “I’m so sorry how rude of me. And when you brought cake too. Come in and I’ll put the kettle on. We can have tea with cake”
“Sounds great, thank you,” Elphaba nodded, smiling as she moved into the hallway. She followed Elsa into the kitchen. “Can I help?”
“Oh no you’re fine. I can manage. You can keep me company though” she indicated the stools around the kitchen island, “Tell me how you’ve been. How is life as a mom?”
Elphaba smiled and settled herself onto one of the stools Elsa had pointed to. “Oh god...a mom? I uh...I don’t really think of myself in those terms,” she laughed awkwardly.
“Oh I’m sorry” Elsa said looking over worriedly at Elphaba, “I just assumed what with Luthien’s son living with you...”
“No, no...I mean...I am, technically, I just,” Elphaba shrugged, placing the cake on the table in front of her. “I don’t know really, I just don’t consider the term ‘mom’ to really apply to me I guess. Dior is Lúthien’s son biologically. Calling myself ‘mom’ seems kind of like...a dream,” she tried to explain.
“Oh I see” Elsa said, as she retrieved cups from the cupboard, “Well I’m obviously no expert but I think it takes more than biology to be a mom and you obviously care a great deal for the child”
“I do, I love him to pieces,” Elphaba told her. “He’s smart and adorable. He has the cutest little laugh too!” she smiled. “You should come over to the house and play with him. Personally, I think he’s going to have an aptitude for the sciences, but I may be biased,” she shrugged. Dior seemed very comfortable with numbers, was learning rapidly and the part of her that had been an accountant for so many years desperately wanted to pass it on.
Elsa smiled, “I’d love to meet him. I’ve not really had much interaction with children. Anna is younger but she was ill as a child and I was away at boarding school a lot” her voice was soft but the memories were painful. She forced them away noticing a brief chill to the air, she needed to be careful.
“She was ill? I’m sorry, I didn’t know that. What was wrong with her? That couldn’t have been easy to deal with while you were away,” Elphaba watched Elsa with sympathy, rubbing her bare arm against a slight chill in the air.
“She was. We were playing once and she fell from a tree. It took her a long time to recover, and then more and more illnesses and pains started occurring. The doctors had no idea what it was. My parents kept me away but I used to sneak into her room and read to her. Then it was decided boarding school would be best so they could focus on Anna” Elsa explained it all calmly with little emotion but then smiled at Elphie, “They did the best for her and she’s much better now” She made a concerted effort to remove the cold from the room when she noticed Elphaba was uncomfortable.
“That’s really sweet,” Elphaba smiled. “That you used to sneak in and read to her I mean, not that you were sent to boarding school,” she said quickly. “You guys get along ok now though, don’t you?”
“She used to enjoy it when I’d do the voices and she’d fall asleep listening to me. I doubt she remembers” Elsa smiled softly, “We’re not as close as we were, I don’t think she understands what happened. That I didn’t chose to leave but we’re getting there”
“I may have to employ you to come and read for Dior. Sounds wonderful! Though I may have to steal a few tips and tricks from you,” Elphaba grinned. “I’m glad you’re coming together again. She loves you a lot. She was so worried when the snow monster showed up.”
“I’d love to read to him and pass on any tips or tricks I can remember” Elsa agreed easily, it may warm her heart to see a loving family after everything that had happened. To remember that things did go on and there was still good things in the world. “I didn’t mean to make her worry, I lost myself to grief and allowed myself to become overwhelmed. But she saved me. She brought me back from the cold”
“I can see that,” Elphaba smiled at Elsa. “And I’m glad. I’d have missed you,” she told her friend genuinely. “How are you finding the powers now?”
“Thank you Elphaba, that’s very sweet of you to say. I’m glad too I have to admit” she acknowledged, “The amount of power still worries me but I am able to control it better. I just have to watch my emotional control”
“That’s good, that you have more control. How did you find it? What helps?” Elphaba asked. “You still get...’triggered’ by strong emotions then?”
“Love. The warmth you feel from the people who love you and who would do anything for you” Elsa replied, “My sister helped me to find it. She thawed my defences with her caring insistence and love. But yes sometimes things do trigger me and I still struggle for that complete control”
Elphaba smiled and tilted her head to the side as Elsa spoke. “Your sister is amazing. What does she do? How about Kate? How are things with her?”
“She really is. She’s starting college in September, art history” Elsa said proudly, “Kate has been amazing. She’s really been a rock for me. Things are going really well. You and Luthien are doing well too?” she asked, “I imagine it’s a relief for her to have Dior living with you now”
“Art history, huh. Has that always been an area of interest for her then?” Elphaba asked, leaning forward on the counter. “Yeah, Lúthien and I are doing really well thanks. I’m going to whisk her away to elope with her this summer but shh,” she put a finger to her lips. “Don’t tell anyone,” she grinned. “I think she’s much happier with Dior around. Maybe even helping her music too,” she shrugged.
“I’m not sure. Our parents home schooled her so they would know” she paused, “Would have known” she corrected herself. “Oh really, how wonderful Elphaba. I’m so happy for you. I won’t say a word I promise”
“I’m so sorry, Elsa,” Elphaba replied. “I wish I could do something to help ease the pain. My mom died when I was very young. I don’t really remember her. It must be so much harder,” she said quietly, looking down at her hands.
Elsa waved off the apology, "It's okay I just need to remember to work on my tense use" she smiled kindly, "Come on, don't let my slip up spoil your news"
“Are you sure? I don’t want to seem insensitive talking about me is all after you’ve had such a huge change,” Elphaba asked, feeling unsure whether she should continue to talk about her plans for the future when her friend had suffered such a loss. She’d never really had to deal with this sort of thing before.
“Oh no, really, I’d rather talk about you. I need good news and a surprise elopement is definitely good news” Elsa replied, “So have you got it all planned? Do you need any help?” she asked.
“Ok then,” Elphaba replied with a reluctant smile. “I’ve not got it all planned yet, I’m planning it all with my friend Glinda. She love’s parties and stuff and I’m….well, I never really got invited to parties,” she shrugged. “But, my plan is to take her to the Black Forest in Germany. She’s a very earthy type of person.”
“Oh my, that does sound wonderful. I’ve never been to Germany but it looks beautiful. And there are a few lakes and rivers there from what I’ve heard. That will be absolutely perfect” Elsa replied, “I’m sure she’s going to be thrilled”
“Well...would you and Kate like to come with us?” Elphaba offered quietly. “We’ll need more than just Glinda as a witness after all,” she shrugged, giving Elsa a little smile.
“Oh” Elsa looked rather surprised, “Are you sure? I wasn’t hinting at all, I promise” she said in case it had sounded like she was.
“No, I know it’s just…” Elphaba shrugged. “You’ve been through a lot lately and you’re my friend. I want you there,” she explained simply. “That is...if you’d like to be, of course.”
“I’d love to be there for your special day. Thank you so much Elphaba, you’re a wonderful friend. I’ll speak to Kate too” Elsa said, very touched by her friends words. Elphaba was such a good person.
“Of course, of course,” Elphaba nodded. “Let me know when you’ve had a chance to speak with her and we can get everything sorted,” she smiled up at her friend. “I’m really glad you’re ok Elsa.”
“I will” Elsa smiled, “And thank you Elphaba, I am too”
