Alana was getting used to Orange County quickly. She had a lot of recommendations to follow up on, and she tried to waste no time in doing that. Better to get accustomed to it earlier while she still had the time. Eventually, she planned on expanding on her friend’s practice and evolving her own, which would take up a lot of time in the future.

One such recommended place was Baxter Bakery. Apparently there was something about lattes that sparkled, so, naturally, Alana had to try it. Waiting in line to order, she scanned over all the tempting pastries, trying to decide which one would be the lucky choice.

Verity was baby-free at the moment. It wasn’t often that she had a chance to get a cup of coffee and sit by herself for a half hour, so she was going to take it. Her sister-in-law, niece and nephew were at a park nearby, playing in the sand and having a grand time. Verity’s beloved sister-in-law was watching the kids, and told Verity to go relax for a few. Verity wouldn’t take much more than a half hour, but she would definitely take it.

She headed into Baxter Bakery for a sparkling latte, and stepped into the line. Normally, it didn’t take long to get food and drink here, and Verity was starving.

From the corner of her eye, Alana saw someone else get in line. Turning around, the smiled and motioned ahead of her. “Oh, you go ahead. Really. I honestly have absolutely no idea what I want. I didn’t expect all this choice when I got here.”

Verity gave a little chuckle. “First time, is it? Do you need a recommendation?” She asked, and gave a little wave to the auburn-haired woman behind the counter. Verity was a regular, and Audrey, the woman at the counter, knew what Verity wanted.

“That obvious?” Alana asked, laughing. “Yeah. Someone on a network recommended this place to me right off the get-go. I just finally found the time to come down. It all looks so good.”

“It is all really good. The sparkling milk lattes are the best. Absolutely the best.” Verity said, finding that she may or may not have started drooling just at the thought. “I’m also really fond of the like… flaky pastry? Like, croissants and stuff. She makes one with custard and fruit in a figure eight shape. It’s amazing.”

“I heard about the lattes!” Alana said, a bit more enthusiastically than she’d meant to. But if everyone kept talking about them, then they had to be good. “A croissant is a good choice. I’ve never been led astray by a croissant.”

“Oh, I’ve had a dry one.” Verity leaned in, as if conspiratorially. “No one should ever attempt to make a croissant low fat.” She gave a shudder, then glanced around playfully, nervous someone might have overheard her utter the horrible words. “...everything here is good. Especially the lattes.”

Alana made a face. “Low fat croissants?” she asked, laughing. “Doesn’t that sort of defeat the purpose?” She just shook her head, but then looked grateful for the advice. “Thank you. I feel slightly less overwhelmed now. But you should still properly go and order ahead of me.”

“Exactly,” Verity agreed, grinning brightly. She stepped forward and greeted the woman behind the counter. The redhead at the register already had her order made and rung up, ready to go. Verity paid, then turned around to the woman she’d been speaking with. “I’ll be right over there,” she motioned to a table, “if you have any more questions.”

The offer just made Alana smile more. “Thank you,” she said, and she meant it. “Oh - I’m Alana, by the way,” she added, feeling a bit dumb for having not mentioned it before.

“Hi, Alana,” Verity said, grinning brightly. “I’m Verity.” She motioned to her table again, then moved to sit in it. She was going to enjoy this baby-free time to the best of her ability.
