Severus was back at work. Things at home weren’t great, and he was trying to get back to some sort of normalcy. Though, he knew deep down that something was broken, and wasn’t fixable.
He was in the lab, meeting with people and working on different projects today. Time had gotten away from him as he stared into his microscope. It wasn’t until someone said his name that he turned to see who was in the lab with him.
This was a particular task that Will hadn’t wanted to take on himself. His social skills, he knew, were not very up to par, and having to meet people for the first time was awkward for him. Especially on work related topics. Still, his research had told him that when it came to pharmaceuticals, Severus Snape was the go-to. Will always liked having the best on hand.
Due to unforeseen circumstances, Will had to arrive at the building without making any appointments. Flashing his badge got him through things pretty quickly and someone showed him the way to go, and Will had to clear his throat and say the man’s name before getting his attention.
“I’m sorry to just … Stop in like this,” he apologized, reaching for his badge again. “I’m Will Graham, with the Irvine PD, I was wondering if I could have some of your time.”
Severus turned away from the microscope, one eyebrow raised as he took in the appearance of the man. Severus wasn’t easy to sway one way or the other. He wasn’t disinterested, ut he wasn’t exactly interested, either. “Of course. I am always available to the Irvine PD, should my skills be needed.”
Anything to keep Severus’ mind off of his personal problems. That’s why he was here, to be sure. His home life had taken a drastic turn lately, and he was thankful for something else to keep his attention.
Will could sense the vague indifference, and it made his anxiety spike a little. That meant he’d have to work a little harder. He cleared his throat and set his briefcase on an empty table. When he opened it, Will took out two clear bags - one had fully round tablets in it and the other hada crushed powder.
“We need these analyzed,” Will said. “Our drugs team looked it over and it’s no common street substance. We think it might be medical, the sort of thing you need a very specific prescription for.”
The sight of the pills and powder actually brought Severus forward a couple of steps. He was intrigued now, despite himself. Perhaps it was the chemist in him. The idea of a challenge. “That shouldn’t be much of a challenge,” he offered, and then reached one hand toward the first bag--the one with the pills. “May I?”
Will nodded, handing the bag over. “I’ve been told there should be more than enough there for adequate testing, but if you need more then you can go through channels at the station.” He turned around to close the briefcase, if only to give his hands something to do. “We need all the information you can give us. Name, classification, chemical make-up, side-effects, the works.”
Severus accepted the bags and examined each in turn. “Most intriguing.” Though, this was the sort of thing people in his line of work did every day, a mystery like this was actually outside of Sev’s everyday practice. He was on the construction side, not the investigation side. He was eager to get started. “When do you need the report?” He asked, not taking his eyes off of the pills in the baggie.
Some people, Will thought, would maybe find that unsettling. He didn’t, though. In fact, he felt like he understood the thought process going through the other man’s head. And it was good to see his interest had kicked in.
“As soon as possible,” Will said. He left a card with his number and extension on the table. “When you’re done or if you have any questions, you can just reach me at this number.”
“Good good.” Severus said. He didn’t even look at the card with the number on it, though he knew he would call when he had any answers. “Just out of curiosity,” he added, though he didn’t look or sound remotely curious, “what sort of case is this work for?”
There was a pause while Will weighed out what he could say. He trusted that Severus, a man in such a business, was good at keeping things under wraps. And he didn’t strike Will as the sort to blab his mouth, but Will wasn’t going to take chances. “We have reason to believe that this might be distributed on the streets, in some form, in the near future. We want to make sure we can stop that from happening if we can.”
Severus nodded. He’d seen some very dangerous chemicals leave his lab, chemicals that probably shouldn’t be distributed under the umbrella of ‘health care.’ Severus made sure that the projects he himself worked on were thoroughly vetted, tested through proper channels. It was something he took pride in--knowing that his work was helping rather than hurting. “I’m happy to do my part in protecting the streets from unknown substances,” he responded, then moved to his microscope to get started.
Will could see that Severus was now a man on a mission, and there was no point in interrupting him now that he’s clearly got some motivation going. He picked up his briefcase and headed to the door, more than capable (and happy) to see himself out. “I hope to hear from you soon,” he said, if only because he felt like he should say something before leaving.
Severus didn’t even respond. He was already absorbed in the work. Figuring out the exact chemical components of the substance would be quite fun, and a nice break from thinking about the other things he had on his mind. It wasn’t until a few minutes later that he realized Will had left the lab.
