Jane sat back on her recliner with her cup in her hands after pouring cups of hot chocolate out for her and Thor. She smiled across at him as she got comfortable. “So, how have things been?”
“They have been...interesting,” Thor said. He lifted his cup to sip at it, heedless of the heat. “It seems as though my dreams do not stop and I lose more and more of who I was. But I don’t really mind. I like this.”
“That sounds...kinda ominous, what do you mean ‘lose more of yourself’?” Jane looked over at him curiously. “You feel like you’re becoming a different person?”
He nodded his head. “More like this person I dream I am. There is less differences than similarities, but I can feel the ground shifting beneath me. But they’re good changes.”
“Good changes...” Jane nodded as she pondered the phrase aloud. “You’re not planning on...flying or making any thunderstorms?” she teased, smiling over at him cheekily.
Thor darted his eyes. He’d thought about it, and with the prevalance of wildfires in the summer it wouldn’t be out of line to give a little subtle help. “Perhaps just a little flying.” He held up two fingers close together. “A little.”
Jane grinned and laughed at that. “Well, if and when you get the urge call me up, coz I don’t want to miss that,” she told him. “So what exactly have you Dreamt about up until now?”
Thor’s expression darkened. “I dreamed of New York, and of working to rebuild the bifrost and restore the realms to order. And then you disappeared from even Heimdel’s gaze.”
“New York?” Jane shook her head at that and turned onto her side to look at him. Pushing her hair back and tucking one hand under her cheek as she put her cup down, she gazed at him curiously. “I don’t remember New York,” she told him with a frown. Did that mean there were more Dreams to come?
“You must not have dreamed that far. You were in a safe place, but it was all over the news.” Thor looked down into his drink. “It was a… battle. There was a time when I would have called it glorious, but too many suffered for it to be like that. Or perhaps I grew up.”
“That sounds like it must have been difficult for you,” Jane watched him carefully. “What happened?”
“Loki….was being himself, and I saw it too late,” Thor said, tone self-deprecating. “He tried to lead an army of Chitauri against the Earth. New York became a war zone.”
“Loki...as in your brother?” Jane questioned, leaning up on an elbow. “What? Wasn’t he back on Asgard?”
“We fought, and he fell from the Bifrost.” Thor gave out a great sigh. “He made some new friends, after that. Friends that promised him power. He wished to be a king, but what use is a king who rules over rubble?”
“God, that’s awful,” Jane sat up as he spoke. “I’m really sorry. Did you…stop him?” she asked, leaning on her elbows with her hands clasped between her knees.
Thor nodded at her, his eyes darkened by the memory. "Yes, I did, but it was not something I could have done alone. There were too many of them. I only wish we'd moved with greater haste. Good people were lost."
Jane watched her friend sadly as he spoke. She didn’t know what to say so she let him talk. It seemed like he needed it.
Coulson...Son of Coul...Thor found it difficult to think of him like a normal person and not like the person he was in those dreams. A friend. Someone to look up to, really. He’d only wanted to do his job, and that was something Thor could respect. Stealing all of Jane’s equipment aside.
“I learned that shwarma was good, after that.”
“Shwarma?” Jane laughed in response.
“Shwarma,” Thor confirmed, giving her a big, puppy dog grin. “I’ve had it in this life, but it was a first for an Asgardian, I assure you.”
“That must have been a weird feeling to experience,” Jane frowned with a quirky smile. “What did it feel like to have it for the first time even though you’ve had it before?” she asked with a little laugh.
“Exhausting, but that may have been the aftermath of the battle!” Thor laughed, a little too uproariously. “And my poor brother, tied up in the corner.”
Jane made a face at that. “Ooh...awkward, what happened to him afterward?”
The big blonde puppy dog of a man sobered up a little bit. “We took him back to Asgard, and he was locked away in the dungeons. The accomodations aren’t too bad. Not unlike house arrest.” Really, part of him thought they were too good. He had his own cell, and it was comfortable enough.
“Sounds rough, how did the rest of the family take it?” Jane asked, picking up her hot chocolate to take a sip.
“It’s hard to read father. He was disappointed. We all were. Mother snuck off to see him, though. I don’t think he understood that we still loved him, despite everything.” Thor struggled to understand in those dreams. He struggled while awake, as well.
“I’m sorry,” Jane said to him. “I remember...you, standing up to that metal titan on the street and talking to your brother through him I remember you loved him a lot,” she shook her head sadly. “What happened to make him so angry? With you? Your family?”
Thor was silent as he thought it over. He shook his head. “Jealousy, perhaps. He never felt like he fit in, and then he discovered a dirty family secret of our father’s and I suppose he must have taken it badly.”
Jane watched him for a little while, head tilted to one side before asking gently. “Are you ok?”
“I will be. It is much to take in.” Thor tapped two fingers against his chest. “But I can only trust in my brother. He is a good man. He was just misguided in the dreams.”
“I don’t think I’ve met him yet,” Jane said. “Is he...similar...to how he is in the Dreams?” she asked carefully.
“They share the same sense of humor,” Thor replied, wincing. “And some of the same theatrics, but he isn’t...evil.”
“Well...that’s good,” Jane shrugged. “Right?”
“That’s good, that’s important.” The Asgardian nearly crushed his cup, but stopped before it was too late.
“Woah, easy tiger,” Jane stood up, reaching for the cup. “You want a top up?”
“Yes.” He held the cup up. “Please. I’m sorry. This just gets me...emotional.”
“That’s ok, it’s just…” Jane took the cup with a smile and held it up. “I don’t have many of these left is all. Can’t have you crushing one of my last ones,” she joked, pouring him out some more hot chocolate and handing it back to him. “How do you and Loki get on here then? Or shouldn’t I ask?” she topped herself some more drink before returning to her seat.
Thor darted his eyes, thinking of smashing glasses in the cafe. It was hard, sometimes, to not want to do that and he’d broken one or two at home. “We are...well, though he has been edgy of late. I ought to pay him a visit, and set his mind at ease. I was angry after one of my dreams.”
“Angry? Why?” Jane asked. “Did you take it out on him?”
“He let go, when I thought he should hold on.” But no, Thor hadn’t taken it out on him. Perhaps a little verbally, but he’d been upset and betrayed. And the other dreams he’d had...Thor wasn’t sure how to approach it.
Jane frowned at that. Thor spoke more poetically than most people so she wasn’t sure if her meant holding on emotionally or literally. “What do you mean?”
“It is no matter. Something for me to discuss with him, when next we speak.” Thor clapped his hands together. “Now, I believe you wanted to point out something new in the sky tonight?”
Jane watched him, feeling sad for him that there was something bothering him. But she recognised that he obviously didn’t want to speak about it and smiled, sitting back on her lounger to start explaining.
