Anna was a swirling storm of emotions lately. She was worried because her parents were supposed to be home, and weren’t. They hadn’t sounded the alarm yet, because it’d only been a day or two, and her mother and father had been known to take a couple extra days on their trips. But for some reason, Anna had a bad feeling. And Peeta was sick. That, too, made her feel all squishy inside. Though, thinking about Peeta also filled her with warm, gooey goodness. Elsa had moved in temporarily to stay with Anna while their parents were away, which was also good. But she was a jumble.
So she and Ariel decided to get FroYo. It was a nice day, a nice outing, and would hopefully take Anna’s mind off her troubles. She headed to the shop and kept an eye out for her redheaded friend.
Ariel didn’t have too many friends really. Well, real friends, so she’s always glad to spend time with Anna. So she’s super happy to go do the FroYo thing, and when she arrived she gave Anna an excited wave.
“Hey! How are you?” Ariel gave Anna a hug. She knew that Anna was feeling uneasy lately, so she hoped to perk her friend up a little bit.
“Hey!” Anna brightened a bit at the sight of her friend, and returned the hug. She wasn’t all that great or experienced when it came to people, but she knew better than to let all of her distractions show on her face. “I’m okay. How are you? Did you talk to him yet??” She asked, ignoring all of her own issues to talk about Ariel’s.
“I’m good!” Ariel said brightly, because she was. It took a lot to get her down. At the mention of Eric, a blush came to her cheeks and she ushered Anna inside. “Oh my god. Sort of? He commented on a post I made and I think maybe I might be seeing him next week? I don’t know.”
“You think you might be seeing him next week? I don’t know what that means.” Anna said. She looped her arm through her friend’s to drag Ariel inside for a cup of coffee. Or an iced, milkshake-y beverage with a little coffee flavoring in it.
“Well. Daddy’s having this gala thing,” Ariel said, following Anna, “and I made a post saying how I’m not really a big fan of hanging around them. And I said maybe someone can make some plans to like, save me?” She raised her eyebrows and looked over all the yogurt toppings and options. “And he said he might stop by.”
“Well, there you go! That sounds good! Promising!” Anna said, giving her a bright smile. “I mean, it’d be good for him to… I don’t know. Make an appearance?” Anna was thrilled for her friend. She moved over to stand in line. It wasn’t very busy. “Do you think he’s going to??”
“I don’t know. Maybe?” Ariel tried not look distressed about it. It was still super weird that she sort of met Eric in her dream world. And by sort of met, she of course meant save his life and then obsess over him a bit. She ordered her yogurt with lots of fruity toppings. “I’m sort of worried about Daddy meeting him? Like I don’t know. Daddy’s so protective of us. It didn’t go so hot in the dreams.”
Anna ordered hers with chocolate. Chocolate everything. Syrup, sprinkles chips, the whole nine yards. It was disgusting but delicious at the same time. “...Wait, your Dad met him in the dreams? I think you need to give me the whole story here.” Anna said. It sounded really romantic, and she loved that sort of thing.
Once Ariel took a seat, she waited for Anna, then stabbed into her yogurt. “Okay, it’s like this,” she said, around her mouthful. “So in the dreams I’m super obsessed with the human world. I mean, you know, want what you can’t have and all. And it drives my dream father bonkers because he doesn’t trust humans. You know, they fish and whale and being an underwater creature I can see where the hate comes from.” Ariel shrugged. “So you know, I swim up to the surface, see Eric, then his ship catches fire and I save his life. And then my friend Flounder finds a statue of Eric and brings it to me. Totally awesome. But then daddy’s adviser spills the beans that I’m in love with a human. So daddy comes and destroys all my human things and my statue.”
Anna sat down opposite Ariel and ate her yogurt passively but listened attentively. She was very interested in these dreams, for sure. Her eyes went wide. “He destroyed all your stuff? How awful!” She said. “Then what happened??”
Ariel just shrugged. “That’s it,” she said. She shoved her mouth full of more yogurt. “That’s when I woke up. Haven’t had anymore since.”
“That’s it??” Anna wasn’t satisfied with that answer. “That’s not good enough!” She said, mock defiantly. “I want you to have more dreams! Right now.” She punctuated her sentence by sticking a spoonful of chocolate-y goodness into her mouth.
“Oh, yeah,” Ariel replied, rolling her eyes dramatically. “Let me just go curl up in an empty chair and I’ll get right that on that.”
“I wonder if there’s a way to encourage more dreams to happen,” Anna said, thoughtfully. She really wanted to know how the story ended with her sister. So far, in her dreams, she was about to die of a frozen heart. She just needed to get to Kristoff. An act of true love was the only way to melt her frozen heart. “I mean, wouldn’t that be something? Anyway, you know him in this world, too, is that weird?”
“It’s way super weird.” Ariel raised her eyebrows up high. “Like. I knew him before the dreams, so maybe it was just me projecting him into them or something. I guess I need to wait and see if he dreams.”
“Oh. Yeah. I never thought about it that way.” Anna was thinking about the dreams as like, alternate reality. She hadn’t even imagined that she could have had some influence on her own Dreams. “...I wish Peeta would show up in mine,” she said, going bright pink around her cheeks as she spoke. “I mean, he’s got these really terrible dreams. I wish he’d dream something happy, like my dreams.” Even though her dreams weren’t always happy… it was better than children fighting to the death.
“Oh my God,” Ariel said, leaning forward with a grin, “I totally forgot. How’s it going with Peeta? Are you like, officially totally absolutely boyfriend and girlfriend? What’s he like? Tell me about it and him. I bet he’s super adorable.”
Anna’s cheeks flushed so deeply, they splotched. And started matching her hair. Kinda. “Oh my God,” Anna said, and lifted her fingers to press against her burning cheeks. “He’s absolutely amazing. He took me on this picnic. Ariel, you wouldn’t even believe it. He’s so romantic.” She shrugged her shoulders and gave a wistful sigh. “I don’t know what we are. Dating? Maybe? I don’t think he’s my boyfriend? He’s been really sick, so I haven’t seen him in a while.”
“I think he’s totally your boyfriend,” Ariel told her with a serious-ish face. “Sucks that he’s sick. Is he getting better? I hope he’s getting better.”
“I don’t know. I haven’t heard too much from him. I sent a care package, though. And he was going to the doctor, so I bet he’s getting better.” Anna said, sounding fairly nervous. “I don’t know if he’s my boyfriend. He hasn’t like… asked me to go steady, or anything.”
“... Wow. Wow.” Ariel actually snerked a bit. “Did you just say go steady? Does anybody actually even say that anymore?”
Anna laughed, going bright red again. “What? Isn’t that what the kids these days are calling it?” She asked, poking fun at herself. “I mean,” she added a bit more seriously, “...how am I supposed to know? He’s the only guy I’m going on dates with. Does that make him my boyfriend?”
“Uh, yeah!” Ariel said, like it was the most obvious thing in the world. “That is so dating. That it is mega dating.”
“I’m… I dunno. Isn’t he supposed to ask?” Anna said. “Or… at least confirm? Or something? I don’t know. Maybe he’s assuming things. Maybe he doesn’t feel the same way I do. Maybe… maybe a lot of things.” She cleared her throat.
Ariel paused, eating some yogurt thoughtfully. “I … Don’t know. I’ve never had a boyfriend like, ever. I haven’t even ever been on a date. So you’re like, way ahead of me on this.”
“Well, I’m only a couple of dates ahead of you,” Anna said, supportively. “I mean, you and Eric, maybe?” She grinned. “Then we can go on double dates. To Disneyland!”
“Oh my god!” That sounded amazing. Actually the most best. “I wonder if Eric would do that.”
“Why wouldn’t he? It’s Disneyland!” Duh. Anna was beaming so absolutely brightly that it hurt her cheeks.
“I don’t know. He’s just … Eric-y. I don’t know. I’ll totally send you the name of the TV show he’s on and you can watch it and then tell me what you think.” Because Anna’s opinion super mattered.
“Okay!” Anna said, breaking into a grin. “Are you sure I don’t watch it already?” ...the poor girl was home a lot, and watched far too much television. It might not have been healthy.
“Maybe. I don’t know. Eric Prince?” Taking out her phone, Ariel googled up a picture of him, which made her get a stupid grin as she showed it to Anna. “This guy.”
Anna leaned across the table a bit and stopped shoving her face full of fro-yo (she could really shove in there--she had chipmunk cheeks, really) so she could take a look at the phone. “OH YEAH,” she said, as if she realized who it was for the first time. “I’ve seen him on Valarnet, too.”
“Yes!” Ariel exclaimed, a bit over-excitedly. It got her a weird look from the other patrons so she ducked a bit and finished off her yogurt. “Anyway. Ugh. I’m just so into him. But he’s like. Him. So.”
“Maybe he’ll be just so into you, too. Maybe he already is!!” Anna said, almost as excitedly. She didn’t get any weird looks, though. “...I mean, you’ve gotta chase that dream, right? That’s what we’re living for.”
“Wow. That was so much cheese,” Ariel teased. She got up and tossed her empty cup out. “Hey, let’s go for a walk or something. Cause it’s nice out and all.”
“Yeah, okay.” Anna said, sheepishly. She knew it was cheesy, but she was a romantic at heart. “We can go feed the ducks.” She followed Ariel out, tossing her empty cup along the way.
