Severus had a favorite tea shoppe. They grew their own tea plants, dried the leaves and other herbs on their own, and created their own blends of the teas. It was the best tea Severus had ever had--in this world or the other. The Dream world. He had dreams from that world every so often still, even though now he knew in his waking world how it all ended. Last night was one of those nights. He’d had a dream about teaching at Hogwarts School. He was trying to shake it now, trying to take his mind off of things that didn’t even exist in this world by enjoying a cuppa and reading the newspaper.
Damon didn’t stop in for tea for himself, but he knew that Elena liked it, and could unwind with it while she prepared for finals. He looked at a honey lemon blend, or the green tea. Wasn’t the green supposed to give someone energy? He smiled to himself and picked a box of each off the shelf. He paid for the purchases and turned, noticing the man quietly reading the paper. He had seen him before, perhaps on the network. There was one in particular that he wanted to meet who was a wizard.
He approached the table looking down at the man. “Hey,” he said, trying to keep his question at bay for now. “I think I’ve seen you around. I was wondering if you had a minute.” He wasn’t so good with small talk, especially if he wanted something.
Severus lifted his eyes from the newspaper and took in the sight of the man in front of him. He noted the striking blue eyes and dark hair, and thought perhaps he’d seen him on Valarnet. Or maybe he’d seen him at work? But he wasn’t sure. One of his eyebrows lifted gently, though he looked more curious than anything else. “I do,” he said, and began folding his newspaper. “How can I help you?”
Damon had an excellent memory when it came to things that he might need later. He had just started dreaming when he spoke with this man over the network, but he remembered that he was a wizard. He had killed his mentor, or a very great man, who was likely a mentor. Damon’s head tipped to the side, “Maybe you can. I know it’s been awhile, but you said you were a wizard.” He hoped he had the right man. If he wasn’t, then Damon could always compel him to forget the conversation.
Ah. So that’s where he’d seen the younger man before. It was definitely on Valarnet, and he vaguely remembered the conversation now. Severus set down the folded newspaper, leaving his black eyes on the other. He gave a nod. “I am in my Dreams, yes.” He was in this world, too, though it might sound a bit strange if someone was to overhear him saying something like that.
Damon took the chair opposite the man. He had been correct in the first assumption, but he wasn’t really sure how the rest would go. However, there was a need, and Damon was fairly persuasive. “I was a dream vampire, which made me an actual vampire,” he said, lowering his voice as well. That wasn’t really something to announce to the public. “I’m looking for someone who can make a good dose of vervain. It’s made from the verbana plant, and it’s used to subdue vampires. My brother and I have been boiling it, but there has to be something a little more effective, and a little magic never hurts.”
Severus had heard about people being affected by the Dreams. He, himself, had magic now. And his wife had two hearts. But turning into a vampire felt like a drastic change--more drastic than his magic or his wife’s second heart, anyway. “I’m not certain that I understand what you’re asking me to do. You are a vampire, and yet you’re looking for a potion to subdue a vampire?” He would be more than willing to help, he just didn’t understand. “Is that right?”
Damon shrugged and smiled a little. “Yeah. There are some concerns that are going to come up. We can say some who can’t control the urges as easily as others, and believe me, it isn’t easy. I can make the stuff, but it isn’t a quick process. However, the verbana plant does the job. That stuff is like acid, and whoever takes it or wears it can’t be compelled either.” He thought mostly of his brother. Stefan could become the ripper he was in the dreams, and he had a wife and child. This couldn’t happen. There were others as well. It was a protective measure that would make life easier.
Severus nodded. “I understand.” He paused for a moment. “It sounds similar to the Wolfsbane potion, something that I created in my world to help subdue a Werewolf. Near the nights of the full moon the potion would be consumed. The change would still happen, though the werewolf would still be in control of his senses--if the potion was not taken, the wolf would take over.”
Damon nodded. “Werewolf venom can kill a vampire in our world.” He had nearly died from a bite. He was still a little angry at the kid who did it, even though he didn’t know him in this life. He brought his mind back to the issue at hand. “Vervain can subdue one temporarily, although it’s repellant factors are even better. My brother has a wife and child. We can’t have him snapping on them, and believe me, his benders are bigger than any alcoholics.” The man did seem to know what he was talking about, and Damon appreciated that. “I’ve been boiling it, but I need a better way to mass produce it, so to speak.”
Severus nodded again. The picture was becoming much, much more clear. “I can replicate the substance magically,” he offered. “As long as I have some of it to start with. In my World we have this thing called Gamp’s Law of Elemental Transfiguration, and…” He paused. Damn. he was starting to sound like a teacher. “Anyway, if you can get me some of the herb, I can mass produce it in whatever form you’d like. Tincture, potion, salve. I can amplify its effectiveness, or dilute it to near inefficiency. I’m a Potions Master, that’s what I do.” ...apparently, Severus Snape in the Real World had a slightly larger ego than his Dream counterpart.
Damon arched a brow, and smiled. He had definitely hit the mother load when it came to what he needed. “I can get you whatever you need. I already have a supply for the plants from a farm heading out towards the desert. I think the guy is an old hippie, but he is willing to sell enough to keep us in good supply.” Elena’s friend was a witch in the dreams, but he wasn’t sure if she could produce what this man could. “We could use a little of all variations. Just let me know where I can deliver the weeds.”
Severus pulled a business card out of his pocket. It had his work information on the front; name, phone number, email, address of the pharmaceutical company for which he worked, and on the back he scribbled his home address and cell phone number. “You can bring the plants to this address. If you can bring me one in a pot, that would be even better. I can grow it here and use whatever parts I need.”
Damon took the card and nodded. “I don’t have one in a pot, but they have seeds. I was going to try to grow them, but my girlfriend insists on wedding planning first.” He had been going through more invitation designs and cakes than he ever thought he would, but they were finally narrowing down their choices. “I do have quite a few plants though, and I will show you the ways they are used in the dreams.”
Honestly, this meant a lot to Damon. Magnus was a difficult wizard to work with. He seemed to be far less willing to help, even when he volunteered. That was not so with this man. “I will owe you big,” he said, taking another drink of his coffee, ready to continue on to work.
“Bring me some seeds. I can grow one for myself.” Severus said. He nodded once more. “I’ll keep that in mind,” he said, breaking into something of a smirk at the mention of being owed. Though, he did it for selfish reasons, and wouldn’t ever ask Damon to pay him back.
“I’ve got more than enough for a small field of them,” Damon replied. Although their reasons might not be the same, Damon always had his own motives as well. He was far from selfless, even though he was getting better. Elena made him better. She brought out a protective nature, not only for her, but for his brother and family. She was really the best influence on him. “I’ve got your card. I’ll bring them by tomorrow morning.”
Severus nodded. He stood from his chair to shake the other man’s hand. He’d just about finished up in here, anyway, and would head out, too. It felt like the conversation was drawing to a close, and both men could go their separate ways. “I’ll see you tomorrow morning, then.”
“Definitely so,” he replied. He didn’t forget a debt either, and there may be a time and a place. It was never easy for Damon to ask for any sort of help. This was a pretty big exception for a guy who was pretty independant. However, he did protect those he loved. Even if they didn’t always get along, he would always be there for them. There were times when Damon could be a selfish ass, but when it came to things like this, he really was a good man, not that he would ever admit it.
