Merlin was sat at one of the tables in Baxter Bakery working on his laptop, he’d decided to try and work from home a couple of days a week in order to keep an eye on Audrey who was now pregnant. Today he was working from the bakery since Audrey was teaching Izzy something new and would likely be there longer than usual.
He was so busy trying to fix bugs in the new code one of his team had developed he missed the tinkling of the door which indicated someone was there. Thankfully Audrey’s staff were much more on the ball and served the woman with a smile, while Merlin sat there mumbling to himself.
Felicity couldn’t help but nose at the work the young man was doing on his laptop while she waited for her frappuccino. “You missed a bit,” her mouth had opened to say it before she realised. Clapping a hand over her mouth she mumbled ‘Sorry’ through her fingers.
Merlin looked up in amusement, “Oh? Would you like to sit?” he asked her gesturing to the chair next to him, “If you’re seeing something I’m not please feel free to help” he said kindly.
“I really am sorry,” Felicity told him, shaking her head. “It’s just sometimes my mouth moves faster than my brain and I end up blurting something out when I should just keep my mouth shut,” she rambled.
“You don’t need to apologise” Merlin assured her, “I wasn’t being facetious I honestly would appreciate a fresh brain. I think I’ve been looking at it for too long”
“Oh, well I’m always up for some coding,” Felicity replied enthusiastically as she sat down beside him to help read over the code. “Umm...Felicity, Felicity Smoak,” she held out a hand in the small space between them.
“Merlin Emrys” he told her shaking her hand, “So I take it you work with computers? Or is this just a really geeky hobby of yours?”
“Both I guess,” Felicity smiled at him, pushing her glasses up her nose as she spoke. “I’ve been playing with computers since before I could walk practically,” she laughed. “I was made the head of an IT company run by my very good friend John Connor before he left the state to take care of his mother.”
“Oh I knew John” Merlin said, “Very smart boy, such a shame about his mother. So are you enjoying running the company? I can’t imagine there’s much chance to play like this” he gestured at the code she was adapting on his computer.
“Really? How did you two meet?” Felicity asked, blowing on the surface of her coffee lightly. “I wouldn’t say enjoying it...it’s a different kind of challenge, but I do miss playing with code and hacking things just because I can,” she shrugged before her eyes widened at what she just said. “Not that I’ve ever hacked anything, it’s just a figure of speech because I’m a totally law-abiding citizen who absolutely toes the line,” she rambled quickly.
“My wife Audrey owns this bakery” he said, “And John helped her out with the computers” Merlin laughed as she rambled, “Don’t worry, I can’t say everything I’ve done is ‘legal’” he said the last word with quiet amusement.
Felicity gave a nervous smile and a quick glance around the room to make sure no-one else had heard them before swallowing and forcing herself to relax. “I love this place, the sparkling milk is just amazing!” Felicity enthused quietly before looking at the screen longingly. “I do miss coding though.”
"Isn't it just?" Merlin agreed, "Normal coffee is just so boring now" he added. "I'd love to have you in my team at Stark but it'd be very different to running a company and while the pay is excellent I'm sure it's nothing compared to John's figure. All I can tempt you with is lots of this type of thing" he gestured at the computer and the code she was working on.
“Oh it that is sooo tempting,” Felicity winced, could she give up running John’s company? Could she do both? She was always ambitious.
“Well we’re pretty flexible time wise so you could even maybe join us part time if you’d like?” Merlin suggested, almost able to see the cogs moving in Felicity’s head.
“Really? You’d do that?” Felicity asked, wondering why someone she’d just met would be so nice to her.
"It's not totally selfless you know" he told her, "basically I want your brain but in a good way not a scary zombie way" he clarified.
Felicity snorted a laugh at that. “Sorry, sorry,” she laughed lightly. “I just...that’s probably exactly what I would have said!”
Merlin laughed, "Anybody who thinks like me has to be part of my team" he declared to her with a grin.
“Well, I can’t really say no to that, I’d love to come work with you,” Felicity grinned, holding out her hand, “Part-time of course, I’ve got a company to run after all,” she told him proudly.
Shaking her hand Merlin smiled, "Of course" he agreed with a nod, "Welcome to the team Miss Smoak"
