Jane sat at the table working on some formulas for finding Mjolnir for Thor. She was almost there with the theory behind it all, she just needed to work a bit more on the practical side of it. Creating a device that could do what she needed it to do was something else entirely but she thought she was on the right track. As often happened, Jane had got so absorbed in her work she hadn’t heard Sam approaching.
Sam took the opportunity to nose at Jane’s work since the young woman hadn’t noticed her arrival, “Now that looks a lot more interesting than my marking” she teased with a grin as she made her presence known.
Jane looked up at the voice over her shoulder and smiled as she realised it was Sam. “Sorry, I just get...carried away, y’know? It’s uh...it’s a favour for a friend,” she explained, tucking a strand of hair behind her ears and tidying up her pens and papers.
"It looks fascinating. Something you can obviously get lost in" she smiled as she sat down opposite Jane, "How are you?"
"Yeah it's pretty interesting. It's uh...it's actually from my Dreams," Jane explained. "I'm good thanks, keeping busy, you know me. How about you? You sounded like you needed to talk about something. Or many things, I don't know," she joked lamely.
“Ah right. Dream tech. Always fascinating and frustrating” Sam said knowingly, “Oh I’m okay. Just lots of things to handle right now. I’ll be fine. Almost the end of the school year right?”
Jane eyed her tutor suspiciously. “Uh huh, why don’t I believe you?” she narrowed her eyes. “What’s wrong?” she asked in concern.
Sam shook her head, “Just a few things that have happened lately that’s all. I’m worried about Lizzie and then the dreams on top of that don’t help” she admitted.
“What happened with Dr Weir?” Jane asked curiously. She knew she’d been off ill suddenly before going to Russia to work for the UN but beyond that no-one knew. “And your dreams, are they...bad?”
“She had some bad personal news” Sam explained, “It left her a little shaken and I guess me too as a result” It wasn’t Sam’s place to tell Elizabeth’s news even if she did know Jane would never gossip. “Oh it’s not that they’re bad as such, they’re just quite intense and full of ideas I wish I could replicate here”
“Oh, that sucks, sorry to hear that,” Jane said quietly, looking down at he fingers as her nails suddenly became very interesting. “Give her my best? I know she doesn’t really know me but,” Jane shrugged helplessly. “Can’t hurt right? So uh...tell me about your Dreams then, what happens?”
Sam smiled, “I will. Thank you Jane, that’s very kind of you” she said, “My dreams mostly revolve around a device called a Stargate...” she gave Jane a brief rundown of what it could do. One good thing about talking to a fellow astrophysicist was that she didn’t need to dumb anything down.
“A Stargate? That’s amazing!” Jane gaped at her tutor in excitement. “The power consumption required to generate a wormhole of that size must be immense! How did you sort out the numbers on that one?”
“The wormhole generation is pretty incredible, though maintaining it requires a lot less power than you’d assume” Samantha began before going on the describe the way they generated the wormhole.
“I can’t believe it! You’re Dreams are from a place that has seen wormholes, hell harnessed them! It’s incredible!” Jane enthused. “What other kind of stuff do you Dream about?”
“Oh all kinds of things. The planets we visit are pretty impressive and varied. Even time travel and travelling to another galaxy. You’d love them Jane”
“Time travel?!” Jane felt like she was on the brink of her head exploding. She sat forward , leaning on her elbows on the table. “My god, I…please tell me that you are thinking up experiments to test these theories?” she asked, before asking for a refill on her coffee from a passing waiter.
Sam asked for a coffee too, smiling her thanks before turning her attention back to Jane. "So many experiments have gone through my head since I started dreaming" she admitted.
"We should totally build them! Your knowledge from these dreams could advance my work on Einstein-Rosen bridges by decades!" Jane enthused.
“I guess it could” Sam nodded as ideas formed in her mind, “I mean the theory and math behind them should be fairly similar. At least similar enough to advance your theories definitely” her own enthusiasm gaining momentum.
“This is so amazing, we need to try and pool our data, see if we can build an experiment to test our theories,” Jane enthused. “Maybe use some of the Stark Industries technology once I’m working there,” she suggested.
Sam nodded, “That would work well. We can work out what we can beforehand but we will probably need more sophisticated equipment at some point”
"Exactly! It'll be great!" Jane grinned in excitement. "I mean there's so many equations we need to sort out before we get to the point of testing," she shook her head in amazement. Sam's knowledge could help her work tremendously and truth was she wanted to get to work right away, but she could tell that Sam wasn't ready just yet. "You're ok, yeah?"
Sam nodded, “I’ll be fine. It’ll be good to focus my mind on something new and exciting” she replied, “I should have more free time over the summer so shall we say we’ll start working on the theory in a couple of weeks?”
“Sounds great, thank you Professor,” Jane smiled and nodded, excited for the opportunities that lay ahead.
