Thor was a big man. Like really, really big. Lara wasn’t intimidated, but it was a good reminder that she still found some men attractive. Thor was definitely on that very short list. She showed him to the study, where she had tea already prepared. The hammer was sitting on a table. She’d sketched it in great detail, had Sam take pictures of every angle, and done a great deal of research into Norse mythology.
Thor was feeling some trepidation. He wasn’t afraid, no, but he worried that Mjolnir wouldn’t consider him worthy, and he wondered what kind of woman the hammer would let pick it up. Lara’s eyes were intelligent, but hard. She had a warrior’s eyes, and she walked with purpose. He liked her immediately. She had her hair in a French braid, and that was a warrior’s look as far as he was concerned.
“You have a lovely home.”
“Thank you.” Lara gestured at the hammer. “It’s beautiful. The inscription, Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor, I’m sure you’re already familiar with."
“My father, Odin - you were able to read it?” Thor folded his arms, regarding the young woman thoughtfully.
“The runes are very similar to Scandinavian runes. It took a bit of effort, but it sounds like I got it right.” She grinned, excitement thrumming through her at the confirmation.
“I made mistakes, in my arrogance,” Thor said. He stroked the handle, caressing it with his fingers. “I was banished to Midgard, and had to prove myself worthy to wield it again.”
“Midgard. Earth. You’ve dreamed of the realm of the gods, and of being banished to earth….” Lara watched him, rubbing her finger tips together.
“Yes. I offered myself in exchange for the lives of my friends and innocents. You must have done something great to be worthy.” He put a hand on Lara’s shoulder, a warrior’s clasp.
It knocked Lara forward a bit, and she ducked her head a bit. “Well, I don’t particularly feel worthy. In my dreams I…well there were a lot of men, and I don’t even know if all of them were bad, but I had to save my best mate and our friends, and stop the Sun Queen from being unleashed on the world. I had to survive, so they could have.”
“Something about that deed, or the motivation behind it, made you worthy.”
Lara looked at it. “I was scared. On that island. I didn’t want to die.” She picked the hammer up. It somehow felt heavier. There was so much weight to it, such a burden behind it that wasn’t immediately apparent.
He placed his hand on the hammer. “Would you have sacrificed yourself for them?”
Lara answered without hesitation. “Yes.”
“Mayhaps that is enough.” Was he worthy? Had he dreamed enough, had he done anything in this life to count? He wanted it so desperately, but want wasn’t enough, he had to deserve it.
“It has power, I can feel that. It would have made fighting Mathias and Himiko a lot easier. I’m sure there are other threats, other gods that Mjolnir’s power would be useful against, but it belongs to you.” Lara held the hammer out.
Some people could be worthy forever, and others for just as long as necessary. Thor didn’t know if Lara was the former or the latter. He thought anyone who would voluntarily deny the power was worthy. “Oft the most worthy are those who do not realize they are.”
Thor gripped the handle. It was the moment of truth, and when he lifted it from Lara’s hands, the sky overhead darkened. Lightning flashed and thunder rumbled. The cats ran for cover as wind whipped around Thor. Lara’s notes and papers scattered every which way but she was too distracted by the spectacle to feel properly horrified at that.
The man stood there, wearing armor and a red cape. It flapped in the residual wind. Laura leaned back against her desk. If she’d harbored any doubts, she no longer had them.
Thor felt the power surging through him. It felt like coming home. It felt like becoming himself once more. He laughed, then set the hammer back onto the table. “I think I may have worked up a thirst. You mentioned tea, Miss Croft?”
“I did. Lets have some, because I’m pretty sure my fiance or roommates are about to come busting in here and I could use some right about now.”
And sure enough, there was a small scuffle at the door before an asian woman bounded through it. Sam didn't bother to introduce herself and for a moment it seemed like she hadn't even noticed Thor's immediate presence, "OH MY GOD LARA, why didn't you tell me he was here there was thunder and the cats are all hiding in the tree--helLO you are totally hot."
That last bit was said as Sam turned her head a bit and took in the sight of Thor, and Thor’s magnificent... everything.
Alistair had been in the kitchen when the mini storm hit the inside of the house and considering storms didn’t generally hit the inside of houses, Alistair had to go see what exactly had just happened. “Please tell me that I wasn’t the only one who noticed that...whatever that was…” He said as he reached the room where everyone else seemed to be converging.
“This must be your roommate,” Thor smiled Sam. It was a flirty smile, and he winked at her. Then he turned to Alistair. “And your fiance?” He winked at him too, for good measure.
“Thor, Sam and Alistair.” Lara flushed, and found herself a little jealous. “Sam is my fiance.” She took Sam’s hand. “Alistair is our room mate.”
Sam grinned at Thor and waggled her sparkly engagement ring, so that the diamonds caught the light, "I know, it totally came as a surprise to us, too! Kind of. Well, it was more a surprise for me that I was gay enough, because Lara has totally been gay her whole life mostly. Mine is just fluid all over the place, I think I might actually be pan!"
Which was more information than anyone needed, and Tauriel thought she must have walked through the door at the most awkward time.
Their newest roommate waved a hand at Thor. Her ears had gotten pointier lately and her hair now hung down to her waist, "Hullo there! You caused quite a fuss, but I see that we're all unhurt."
Alistair was about to respond to Thor’s assumption, which likely would have had him stumbling over his words a bit, but Lara saved him from that and instead he simply nodded in response, “Yeah, not the fiance.”
"Sam! I have not been gay my whole life." She elbowed Sam, face red but seemingly okay with that.
Thor laughed, rubbing the back of his neck to obscure his embarrassment. His eyes looked over Tauriel, then back to Sam and Lara. "My apologies for assuming. Lara was going to serve me some tea. You should all join us."
He picked up Mjolnir again, like it was nothing, and hung it off his belt. It seemed to belong there.
"Oh, tea! Lovely. Yes, let's all have a cuppa." Tauriel sprang up over the couch and took a seat on it, and Sam just laughed at it all. She was happy that the mistake had been fixed quickly, before Alistair was too embarrassed.
She patted Alistair on the shoulder and then took a seat in one of the chairs, "Tea is so like super british, but I'm totally not passing up the opportunity to drink tea with the God of Thunder."
“I’ll have some tea too.” Alistair moved to take a seat after Sam patted him on the shoulder and he ran a hand through his hair, hoping that his cheeks weren’t too flushed. “I mean, if everyone else is, I’m not going to be the odd man out.”
“Well then. Lets move this into the kitchen,” Lara said. She supposed some of her questions could wait.
