"When we get home... can I stay with you for awhile?"
Who: Jubilee and Ty Lee
What: Comforting and epiphanies
When: after this
Where: London
Status: Complete
Rating: PG-13 for language
Jubilee came out of the shower and looked at Ty Lee, then at the phone laying against the wall, and then at Ty Lee again. Tightening the belt around her robe she sat on the other girl's bed and wrapped her arms around her. She didn't say a word. Ty Lee's expression said everything, and not for the first time she wanted to punch Azula in the throat. Hey. She understood why Kitty liked doing that!
There was silence for a few moments while Ty Lee tried to figure out if it was actually okay to sob all over Jubilee. She didn't want to cry about it, Azula was just being ... Azula... but... she was crying.
Sobbing loudly, in fact, not 30 seconds after Jubilee hugged her.
"shh shh.." Jubilee rocked her a little bit, back and forth, back and forth. She kissed her hair and stroked it. When Ty Lee started sobbing it was all she could do to not start crying herself.
The odd thing was that this wasn't Ty Lee's first time away from everything she knew. She'd been bouncing around between world championships and things for quite a bit by then. But something about this Olympics was different, and being so far away from home just made everything ten times worse.
She was being a child about it, Azula would scold her, but Azula thought her words were hollow and meaningless, too, and Ty Lee didn't care. She was just going to cry.
They sat like that for a long time, Jubilee trying her best to sooth her friend, while trying to not think about beating Azula up. Because that was a wonderful thought right now. Or at leats break her nose.
Eventually, she got up to retrieve Ty Lee's phone, which had miraculously survived the throw.
The phone was still in the text message app when Jubilee picked it up, the last few messages right at the bottom of the screen where Jubilee could easily read them.
Ty Lee watched her do it, while wiping at her eyes, "She hates me..."
Jubilee scratched her head, as she read over the messages, scrolling rapidly. This was confusing. And it didn't really fit with the note either, "Something's up. She totes had a meltdown after you said I love you. Have you told her that before?" She plopped on the bed and put an arm around Ty Lee.
"... well... I think I did once or twice during... things," Ty Lee frowned. She couldn't remember. She thought Azula knew, she'd always thought that for some reason.
"Uhm. How did she react when you did?"
Jubilee was trying to not think of things. She didn't need to feel attracted to EITHER of the women involved. Ever.
"I don't think she did, but she'd been a lot cooler lately, you know? I think it's the dreams," She leaned against Jubilee a bit, then hugged her, "I don't think it's going to work. I love her, but ... she thinks my words are hollow. I'm used to her being harsh with me, but it just..."
She waved a hand around, like she couldn't find the words she was looking for. She felt all broken up.
"It's like she shot you in the heart, then ripped it out?"
Jubilee nuzzled her, "I don't...God I don't want to defend her. But she's like..I don't think it's your words so much as the words themselves?" It was a shot in the dark, but Azula had seemed to start losing it too over the course of the conversation, "I'm probably the last person to say this but you can't read what people mean in texts, yo..."
"She didn't have to say that, even if you can't, she should ..." Ty Lee frowned, "I thought she understood. I thought she knew she could be that inner-her, with me. We talked about that in Japan, but I guess. She probably wasn't ready. It's my fault."
Jubilee thwapped her on the shoulder lightly, "Stop that. It's not your fault! She was a bitch to you. It's who she is. I don't know if she needs more time or what but you really should...I don't know.." Jubilee trailed off. She wanted to tell Ty Lee to break up with her, but that was more her own feelings coming out than anything else.
And part of her had been rooting for the two of them. That was evident on her face.
"I want to tell her it's over if she can't ... respect my feelings... But I'm scared of what that would do. If I did that, then she'd start believing the words really were hollow. They weren't hollow, Jubes. I just thought she knew. I thought she understood. The way she treats anyone else... But I let her treat me that way. I thought she knew why."
Her voice was extremely tiny while she spoke, and when she was done, she sunk onto the bed and curled up a bit, "Why couldn't she wait to be herself until after I was back home again?"
"What do you think that would do? I know you love her, Ty Lee, but you can't....fuck yourself over just to protect her. Maybe she needs the kick in the ass to realize that she could lose you. Maybe she knows, but I don't think she understands."
"She might kick me out. She said she was going to find my sponsor, she could say things to my sponsor, I could lose it, then I'd have no money. I wouldn't be able to keep doing this."
She might hurt me. That thought stabbed her in the chest when she thought it. She had never, ever before, thought something like that. But the way Azula had been lately, the way she'd changed as the dreams started happening more frequently. The way she could summon fire.
Ty Lee sat there on the bed and realised that a lot of the things her other friends had been warning her about might be true. The realisation utterly crushed her.
Jubilee couldn't think of a way to respond to that. It was like Ty Lee had had an epiphany but it was a really shitty, heartbreaking epiphany. She took her hand and squeezed, "Azula has always been really interested in this. Even I've noticed that. I'm sure she won't try to fuck up your Olympics. She's not that cruel. I promise, it'll be fine."
The rest of it, she couldn't respond to, except that Ty Lee looked so crushed that Jubes could feel the heartbreak washing over her. She hugged her again, tenderly.
The hug was welcome, and Ty Lee returned it with a light amount of pressure at first, like a cautious child. Mainly, because her head was spinning with thoughts. She wanted to do something about all of this, but she wasn't sure what to do. She was in London, Azula was far away. Breaking up with her in a text message wasn't right. She wasn't sure if that was even what she wanted.
"When we get home... can I stay with you for awhile?"
Her voice wavered a bit as she spoke, but she somehow managed to sound resolved, too.
"Yeah. Of course you can. As long as you need to." Jubilee whispered, "That's not a promise I'm gonna break, yo. So you can figure things out."
"Thank you, Jubes..."
"You're welcome. ...lets go work out for a bit. Might take your mind off of things."
Ty Lee forced a smile and nodded, "That sounds good. I can't lose over this. I don't want to."
"You won't." Jubilee got up, tossing her robe off to get dressed, "Lets go kick some ass!"
"... Maybe you should put some clothes on first though." Ty Lee tried not to stare.
Jubilee posed, "What, I can't practice naked?"
"I'm pretty sure if you did that they'd kick you out," the other girl chewed her lip a bit, then got up and started pulling out some clothing to practice in. Her friend was starting to look like a hot asian girl instead of her best friend, and she definitely didn't need that.
Getting herself ready would take her mind off things.
And maybe practice would help.
