Since Cass and Laura had decided to move out of Jubilee’s condo and get a place of their own, Cass had been looking up listings in the surrounding area and had bookmarked quite a few pages. They hadn’t talked a lot yet about what sort of place they were looking for, whether it would be a condo or apartment or even a house, but Cass had a number of listings all different kinds saved to show Laura when they did finally sit down to talk about it, which was what the plan was for that evening.
“So, what are you thinking?” Cass asked, leaning forward as she sat on the couch, opening a links on her laptop, “Condo, apartment or house?” Of course after living in the condo for a little over a year now, Cass wasn’t sure she could go to an apartment. But it wasn’t just about what she wanted and wanted to hear Laura’s opinion too.
They'd lived for so long now in a place they practically owned that Laura wasn't sure she could handle living in an apartment, either. Her lips twisted a bit as she thought about it, then she shook her head, "If we can afford it, I would like to live in either a condo or a house. I think we are both too used to having our own mind about things like thermostats and house decorations. We wouldn't like to have a landlord."
Cass nodded, “I agree. And I don’t think I could go from having a yard to not having one either.” The yard was a good place for Cass to practice either her gymnastics or martial arts when she wasn’t at the gym, “And I think we won’t have to worry much about the money situation. I still get endorsements.” She hadn’t done anything recently, but there was a leotard company interested in having her model their leotards.
"I've been able to go back to my job, too," Laura replied, with a nod. And she had other ways to get money, but she didn't think she could talk about that, even to Cass. Cass was the only friend she had left, and Cass understood her more than anyone. But Laura knew what she was doing was half wrong. She didnt want to fight about it if she didn't have to.
"And I like the yard. It is a good place to spar and practice martial arts. Or just to... relax, though I don't do much of that. More, now that I can be in the sun. We should definitely get another place that has a private yard of our own."
“Yeah, I don’t want to share a yard with anyone.” Cass started going through the pages she had open on the laptop and xed out of any pages for apartments, “Do we want to stay in Newport Beach or do we want to look somewhere else?” She had a few listings in Newport Beach and a few in the surrounding area.
Laura glanced over Cass's shoulder at the laptop, watching the mouse cursor float around, closing options that weren't good for them. She realised she was actually excited about this, and it made her smile, "This area is very nice. I wouldn't mind staying here, though if we find a better place somewhere else, that could work, too. We shouldn't close up the option, anyway. We might lose out on good opportunity."
Cass nodded and clicked through the options remaining on the screen, stopping on one for a condo, “Most of the condos I’ve found don’t really have much of a yard; not like this one. I found this house though, it’s on Princess Circle and it’s got a huge yard. Four bedrooms too, so we could either make two into guest rooms or something.” Cass didn’t know who they would have come visit, but she was sure they could figure something out if they chose this house. “Two Bathrooms.” She turned the laptop more towards Laura as she clicked through the pictures, “The other question though, did we want a pool?” The complex where their current condo was located had a pool.
"Four bedrooms. We could convert one to a training area." Laura took a closer look at the place Cass was showing her. It looked like a very nice place to live, and the yard was huge, "And then the third to a guest room, or perhaps get another roommate. My mothers would like to come visit eventually. They tried to talk me into moving back home when I mentioned Jubilee and I were... not working out. But I want to stay."
The pool at their current complex was a very nice pool, Laura thought. And she liked being able to swim to stay active, "We're both really active people, and I think if we get a house with no pool we'll need to find a local public facility. The ocean isn't always a nice place to swim. But this place looks nice. We should add it to our visit list, perhaps?"
Cass nodded and switched the listing to a different favorites folder then clicked on another page, “Your mothers should definitely come visit after we get settled,” She smiled at Laura, glad that she had decided to stay. “This one also has four bedrooms, a furnished basement and….” She clicked through the pictures, “A pool.”
"A furnished basement. Interesting. I haven't heard of those," Laura thought it probably meant that the basement had been made to look like any other room in the house. The basement back at her old place had been dark and creepy, and was mostly used for storage in the dry months, "All of that space might be nice... if it's what I think it is. "
A quick inspection of the photos provided showed off a sort of man-cave, with an entertainment area, a bar, a pool table, and space for a couch, "Ah. Yes. Like a secondary living room to hang out in. If it's underground it's probably cooler there. That might be nice. And the pool is a plus."
A pause, and she added, “I think they’d like you. And they both like watching the Olympics, so they have probably seen you compete.”
If they had seen Cass then they had probably seen Jubilee too, considering they’d been on the American team together and she wondered if Laura had told her parents that that was the same Jubilee, “Then we’ll have to invite them out here once we’re all settled in.” She smiled at Laura and moved the current listing to the other folder as well, “We could actually do a lot with the basement like that. A secondary entertainment unit. Workout equipment. Anything. There are endless possibilities.”
"An indoor workout area would be good. We could set up mirrors and exercise equipment on one side..." Laura actually sounded excited about the possibilities, "And a little juice bar off to the side, like a relaxation area. Maybe a small area for us to practice dancing - I know that ballet helps gymnasts with grace and flexibility."
Laura nodded. That one and the other one with the many bedrooms were definitely strong candidates, "And that one has space for a guest room, too. What does the next one look like?"
Cass nodded, “I like that. That’d come in real handy.” She showed Laura a few other pages, one of a condo similar to the one they were currently in, but without a private yard. Another house that had a yard, but only two bedrooms and a few others, “Any others jump out at you?” She glanced over at Laura, waiting for her opinions on the listings.
"I think we should add that one Condo to our list, if only because it would be a familiar fallback if we can't get either of the other places. The layout looks similar to our own, anyway, though we'll be sad not to have a yard. But it's good to have options." Laura didn't like the look of the other ones, though, and hoped that they'd get either of the first two candidates. After some thought, she admitted, "I think I like the second one the best. With the basement. We have some projects we could do with that, and I like the idea of that."
Cass added the condo listing to the other folder and brought up the second one again, looking for a phone number for the realtor, “I can call both of them tomorrow and see if we can see the houses.” Cass was also hoping for the second house, because it had all the things that they wanted as well as space for just about anything else they might want to do.
"I would really like that. I have tomorrow off." Laura grinned at Cass, "Then, would you like to go to the Home Depot with me? I want to buy some home improvement idea books. We could make some changes to whatever house we get, and make the place more ours."
“Sure. I’d like that.” Cass smiled and copied the phone numbers down in her phone so she could call the realtors and set up viewings of the houses, “I’d definitely like to make it feel like us. Our own place and not someone else’s that we’re just inhabiting.” Truthfully, ever since Jubilee had left, the condo had felt like that for Cass. It wasn’t a bad thing, but Cass wanted a place that was hers and her and Laura were well on their way to getting that.
"Yes. Our own place. I've never had a place that was my own, and I definitely did not get a place like that in my dreams. Even when I was living with the other students, we had to share rooms. This is a good chance for us to... express ourselves. Together." Laura smiled, and gave Cass a brief half-hug from where she'd been perched on the couch.
"I'm glad we decided to stay."
