Tessa loved her shop. Loved meeting new people, some who loved books like her, others who were buying books for others. Today was no exception. Granted the weather outside was beautiful and she would love to be out in it, but the lure of her tomes was too great. The doorbell rang as a customer entered the shop and Tessa turned around to greet him with a big smile.
“Good morning, can I help you?” she asked him.
This particular bookshop was a place Enjolras had recently begun to frequent. After all, as much as he wanted to admit he knew everything there was to know about civil rights-he didn’t. He had several intimidating looking law books in arm already, preparing for a week of ignoring Grantaire’s drunken antics and studying all at the same time. It was a convenient excuse. He knew it, but hey whatever he could get away with. Grantaire knew better than to bother him when he was knee deep in books.
“Oh, uh I actually am looking for Belle’s of Liberty by Linda Brown. “ For a minute he didn’t even look up, but when he finally did peer over his sack of books he recognized the girl. “You work here pretty often don’t you? Don’t they ever let you go home?” He teased lightly.
Tessa smiled and laughed, leading the man to where the book he was after was kept. “Actually, I work here pretty often because I manage the shop,” she told him politely. “Although I am looking for some help over the summer so I can see my home more often,” she joked.
“Really now? I may actually find that kinda thing fun if you’re interested in a lowly college student?” He offered her a charming smile. “Though I’ll have to warn you, my schedule with court can be a little on the random side..People don’t always break laws on schedule.” He grinned a bit. “Or theirs my roommate Grantaire, if you can put up with the eccentric brooding artist type?” He chuckled at the idea of the poor woman trying to manage Grantaire about. That may have been more work for him trying to make sure Grantaire behaved than anyone else. “My name is Enjolras by the way.” He said with a smile. “Sorry, I should have introduced myself before. I’m a pre-law student at ACLU. “
Tessa laughed a little at that and held out her hand to shake his. “Theresa Gray, but please call me Tessa,” she smiled at him. “Well, I suppose I could do with some casual help , although I’m afraid I already have an artistic, brooding type of help and he’s on his way out. That’s mostly why I’m looking for help,” she shrugged good naturedly.
“Nice to meet you. I’m sure Grantaire will feel the same.” He chuckled at the idea. He knew Grantaire would be oh so thrilled about this plan. But really, Enjolras had his heart in the right place. He just wanted his friend to have something like he did. He had his protests and his rally’s and his quaint little book shops. Grantaire had his fume filled studio. Sometimes he worried for his friend-okay, frequently he worried for his friend. He returned that smile. “ Well my artistic brooder is really only rough around the edges. He’ll surprise you if you’re willing to give him a chance.”
“Well, if he’s willing to come in and talk to me himself then I will happily entertain his application for work,” Tessa smiled at him and gave him a little nod. “I assume he’s a trustworthy sort of fellow?”
“Absolutely. He could do with getting out of the studio. “ And then he nodded. “He really is..but I’ll deny it if he inquires about this conversation you know.” To the typical outsider, Enjolras and Grantaire’s relationship didn’t make much sense. Grantaire was the total opposite of Enjolras, and yet they clicked. Neither judged the other (too harshly anyway) over their actions. Enjolras found himself thinking about Grantaire more these days. If it wasn’t studies on his mind, it was his dear friend. “He’ll deny it but he really is kind. Rough around the edges though..” He shrugged.
“Ok, well send him my way and I’ll see what I can do,” Tessa smiled at him. “Is there anything else I can help you find today?”
“I will. I think that about covers it though, thank you.” He smiled at her again and followed her to the counter to pay for the book.
