Who: Audrey and Nina
When: Late April
Where: Their Backyard
What: Gardening
Rating/Warning: Low/None

Audrey had a half dozen tomato plants she was putting in the backyard. They had some room against the fence and in a planter box for vegetables, and Audrey was going to take advantage. She only hoped that they didn’t or wouldn’t have a mole problem. Moles loved to munch on tomato plants.
She dug into the earth to put the plants in, using a small spade and enjoying the feel of the earth between her fingers.
When Nina woke she had a shower and dressed before grabbing some toast from the kitchen. She wandered outside enjoying the sun, she’d become much better acquainted with it since moving to California and was glad of it too. Spotting Audrey she smiled, “Hey” she said as she came over, dusting off her hands on her jeans, “Want a hand or company?” she asked dropping herself down next to her friend.
“I can’t say no to that,” Audrey grinned as she looked over and saw Nina coming to join her. “...Planting some of these tomato saplings.” Not exactly saplings, because they weren’t trees? Or do you call baby tomato plants saplings, too? She decided not to dwell on those thoughts. “I’m planning on making some marinara at the end of the summer, so we need a ton of tomatoes.”
Nina would have gone with tomato plants but either worked, she knew what Audrey meant. “Ooo marinara, that sounds good” she said as she began separating the plants for her friend to place into the holes she’d already dug. “I completely approve of this plan” she grinned.
They were still baby plants. Little ones. With Audrey and Nina’s help (and possibly some of Merlin’s magic) they’d grow into huge plants with tons of fruit. But right now they were only a few inches tall. Less than a foot tall. “Good! I want to start making some more savory things at the bakery, too. Quiche and whatnot. It’d be really fun to sell sauce.”
Nina thought that Merlin’s magic came in really handy, she’d been guilty of asking him for a few trivial things before in an emergency. “Oo quiche would go down well, I love quiche”
“Me, too.” Audrey said, grinning. “Cheddar cheese, bacon and eggs, and a light, flaky crust. What’s not to like?” She asked, moving to turn over some more soil for the next row of plants.
“Mmm true. I’m drooling just thinking about it” she grinned, really any of Audrey’s cooking was drool worthy. She was a master at her craft. “This soil looks pretty good, I bet they’ll thrive here”
Audrey laughed. “You and me both.” She said, giving her friend a grin. “Can you hand me that spade?” She added, motioning to a hand-shovel next to where Nina was sitting. “I hope they’re going to get enough sunlight.”
Nodding, Nina handed it over, “I’m sure they will, you’ve picked a great spot” she smiled, “It’s already feeling so homely Audrey”
“That’s the goal.” Audrey said, giving Nina a smile. It wasn’t cheap, and it took a lot of work, but Audrey had high hopes and plans for the house and the garden. She wanted to make the place perfect for when she and Merlin made a baby.
“You’ll achieve it. You and Merlin, if anybody can it’s you two” Nina told her confidently, “I can’t think of anything that you try to do not working”
“Well, I’ve had some flops in the kitchen before.” Audrey confessed, blushing deeply. “But so far so good, I mean… I’ve been on a lucky streak for a while.”
“I’m willing to bet your flops are better than my great days” Nina teased, “You have a natural talent for cooking Aud”
Audrey grinned. “Well, thanks, Nina.” She said, and bumped her friend with her shoulder. “It’s certainly something I love to do. In fact, I was going to go make some scones as soon as I’ve got these plants in the ground.” She only had two left.
“Ooo fruit scones?” Nina asked hopefully, “Can I help? I mean doing jobs that means I can’t ruin anything of course” she added.
“Sure. Of course.” Audrey said. She finished planting the two plants, then stood and tugged off her gardening gloves. “I’ve got a few jobs that I can’t imagine you’d mess up.” She gave her friend a wink.
Nina nodded, “Excellent, that sounds good. Just don’t blame me if I manage to anyway” she grinned.
Audrey laughed. “C’mon. Let’s go get washed up.” She said, and looped her arm through Nina’s so the pair could head inside.
