Not only did the weekends mean more time to spend with his daughter and girlfriend and friends, it meant Roy got the privilege of going grocery shopping. If there was one thing Roy hated, it was food shopping. It wasn’t the shopping itself that he didn’t like, but the crowds. It almost never failed, whether he went Saturday or Sunday, early or late, it always seemed as if people were expecting some sort of natural disaster to hit and all decided to go shopping at the same time. Of course, every now and then, he’d go and there wouldn’t be quite as many people, like today. He didn’t know how he’d gotten so lucky, but as they say, he wasn’t about to look a gift horse in the mouth. Pushing his cart, Lian walking next to it, Roy glanced at the shelves they passed, trying to figure out what to make for dinner that night.
Even on a good day, Loki hated mundane tasks, and there was little more in the way of mundane than grocery shopping. Still, he’d rather do it himself since Fandral managed to get suckered into buying twelve boxes of Girl Scout cookies. It was just tedious, especially when one had to try and buy food to match up to two Asgardian metabolisms. At least, he thought, it looked like he just had a family to feed and not two adult men. By the time Loki had reached the pasta shelves, his patience was wearing thin, and he looked at the boxes with something like contempt and annoyance on his face.
Roy and Lian were also in the pasta aisle, Roy trying to decide between fettucini and angel hair when Loki turned into the aisle. Still trying to decide between the two type of macaroni, Roy was effectively blocking part of the aisle as well as the shelf the macaroni was on while Lian leaned on the cart. “I’ll never understand why there are so many different kinds of macaroni.”
“Because,” Loki said, glad to see he wasn’t the only one who seemed to have issues with the pasta, “it’s a cheap and effective means of torture.” He huffed a little as he leaned over to get the big bags of pasta that always lived on the bottom shelf.
Roy laughed and nodded as he tossed the box of angel hair pasta into the cart, “That is very true. Who would have thought they could make so many different shapes with macaroni,” He smirked at the newcomer, something about him seeming familiar upon first glance. He’d definitely seen the man somewhere before and it took him a moment or two before he remembered a similar situation, but concerning chocolates, “Hey, you’re the guy from the candy store, right? Back around Christmas?” He had a feeling he’d seen him somewhere else too, but the mall encounter was what stuck out in his mind at that moment.
At the mention of Christmas and the store, Loki glanced over as he dropped some bags of pasta into the cart. He was, fortunately, good with faces. “Yes, I believe I was. Such a small world that we continue to run into one another when food is involved.”
“It really is.” Roy said, leaning on the cart as Lian watched the man, “I don’t think I caught your name then. I’m Roy Harper. This is my daughter, Lian.” These days Roy got less odd or judgemental looks when he was out with Lian as opposed to the ones he got when Lian was younger and it was obvious that he too was young, but at twenty seven, he still looked young, but not too young to have an almost ten year old daughter.
Supermarket small talk, tedious. Fortunately, Loki still had some sense of mind to not be rude in front of a child, so he put on a more or less polite smile. “Loki Odinson.”
Before Roy could say anything in response to that, Lian spoke up, “Loki? Do you know Darcy Lewis?” Lian had asked Darcy not too long ago if she was still friends with any of the guys she’d dated before Roy. She’d overheard Darcy talk to Roy before about how her other relationships hadn’t been stellar so when Lian had asked, the answer had been that she was still kind of friends with one, Loki. And considering that wasn’t exactly a common name, Lian couldn’t help but ask now.
Frowning, Roy couldn’t figure out why Lian would ask the other man that question and ran a hand through his hair as he gazed over at his daughter, “Lian...what makes you think that?” He glanced up at Loki, “Sorry about that.”
Loki raised an eyebrow slightly at Darcy’s name, and he put on a smile that was meant to assure Roy the curiosity was fine, but it just looked a bit sharp. “Yes, actually, I do know her. We’re old friends, you might say. We’ve known one another a while.”
Roy’s brows rose at Loki’s response and he wondered how Lian had known that the other man knew Darcy. However, by the way he answered the question, caused Roy to take a guess.
“She said you’re her ex-boyfriend.” Yup, that was pretty much what Roy had been guessing. It wasn’t like he was jealous or anything, after all, Loki was Darcy’s ex for a reason and considering Loki hadn’t tried to cause any trouble between them over the last couple of months meant that he wasn’t trying to get her back or anything. It was simply interesting that they would run into each other like this.
Roy couldn’t help but chuckle at the entire situation, completely unsurprised that Lian might have asked Darcy about other guys she might have dated before him, “This is what I mean when I tell people that my daughter is too much like me for her own good.” He smirked over at Lian, quirking a brow at her then turned his attention back over to Loki, “So, small world, huh?”
Loki merely shrugged a shoulder. It hadn’t exactly ended on great terms, but it seemed, at least, that they’d moved beyond that. “I’m actually quite curious by nature myself, I certainly can’t fault her for being inquisitive,” he said. “It is something of a coincidence, I suspect. All of the people in Orange County and here we are.”
Roy nodded, chuckling, “Seriously. I thought this county was pretty big, but here we are.” He knew that most of Darcy’s previous relationships hadn’t ended on great terms and he couldn’t help but wonder what had ended her relationship with Loki. If what he said was true and they were still friends then it couldn’t have been too bad, “So, should I tell Darce you said we ran into one another or keep it our little secret?” He glanced over at Lian, “Of course, chances are, it won’t stay a secret for long with this one here.”
“I don’t see any reason to not mention it.” Of course, Loki wondered if Darcy would then bring up the whole thing about the dreams where he tried to kill all those people and her. Well, what did it matter, really. “Anyway, I won’t delay either of any longer. The longer I stand in this place the more I feel my soul being drained from me.”
“I know exactly what you mean. I’m pretty sure food shopping is one of the seven circles of hell.” Roy smirked then nodded, “It was nice to see you again, Loki. I’m sure that we’ll run into each other again sometime. Seems to be the way of the universe after all.”
