WHERE: USC Campus
WHEN: Late April
WHAT: Thalia’s starting to get the dreams
RATING: PG
STATUS: log; complete
Thalia had gotten nightmares before, but nothing so vivid as the one she'd had recently, where she'd desperately battled hellhounds on a hilltop. It had been so real that Thalia felt like she was there, and when she'd woken up she could've sworn she was still bleeding. She could understand now why some people had told her she'd be able to tell the difference between a normal dream and whatever was going on with everyone. This was definitely not a normal dream. There had been three others in her dream. Two of them were unfamiliar to her, but the third - a blonde girl - was not. She looked remarkably like Percy's girlfriend...Annabeth? Which was weird, because Thalia had met the girl all of one time. So why was she in Thalia's dream? It made Thalia curious enough to seek her out, and she found both Annabeth and Percy at the quad. "Hey," she called when she approached. Percy hadn’t had any new dreams since the Lotus Hotel and he’d be lying if he said that he wasn’t curious as to what was going to happen next. Him, Annabeth and Grover had a day to find the Master Bolt. There was a lot at stake if they didn’t find the bolt and Percy just wanted to know what would happen. He and Annabeth were hanging out in the quad, talking about random things from upcoming finals to what they would do for the weekend when Percy a familiar voice and turned to see Thalia coming towards them, “Hey. What’s up?” Annabeth’s dreams were slow going and that was fine with her because Percy was having them and telling her about them anyway. If she didn’t have to stress out about battles and quests then she would be quite alright. It wasn’t something she wanted to happen while they were trying to study for finals. And besides, it had taken all of Annabeth’s willpower not to freak out with Thalia appearing on the network. It was strange to feel so strongly towards another person that she hadn’t even met before, but Annabeth’s dreams developed a strong friendship between the two women and she wanted nothing more than to develop that friendship in the real world. That plan was slowly coming together now that they saw each other on campus. Her head turned when she heard the voice and she reached up a hand to wave hello, “Hey!” Now that Thalia was standing in front of them in the daylight, she had no idea what to say. People on the network seemed to have no problem asking each other if they were the people in their dreams, but Thalia still thought that the whole thing was super weird. She looked closely at Annabeth, recognizing the similarities between her and the little girl in her dream. It could be a subconscious thing, where she just happened to pick the face of someone she’d seen recently, but it had seemed so real. Then it occurred to her that maybe if she could see Annabeth in her dream, maybe Annabeth could see her, too. “So...uh...have any dreams lately?” she asked awkwardly. Percy hadn’t actually expected Thalia to ask that and it got him wondering if maybe she’d started dreaming, “Not for about a week. Why, have you?” His brows rose slightly and he glanced from Thalia to his girlfriend then back again. Percy hadn’t actually dreamt about Thalia, but he knew that Annabeth had, before she’d come to Camp Half-Blood in the dreams. “Those kind of dreams?” Annabeth inquired before shaking her head slightly, “Not in a while. I had a lot when it started and now it’s kind of trailed off a little. Percy and I are basically having the same dreams right now, so I just get what’s happening from him.” She couldn’t help but laugh a little at that. It was such a weird thing to discuss, but it made perfect sense to her, “Are you having those dreams now?” "So...you guys are getting the same kinds of dreams?" Thalia asked, looking back and forth between them. "Like, where you see each other in your dreams? Because..." She trailed off and grimaced. This was still such a weird thing for her. "I think I saw you, Annabeth. In my dream." Percy nodded, “Yeah. we’re on the same quest in our dreams. Us and a satyr named Grover. What’s more weird is that we’re like twelve in them.” Well that and the fact that Percy was developing abilities that he had in the dreams and got items from them as well. In fact, he had just worn his Camp Half-Blood T-shirt that past weekend. “They’re pretty crazy, aren’t they?” “And yeah, you probably did see me. I saw you in my dreams a long time ago. They were from before I met Percy in the dreams. I didn’t want to say anything when I saw you on the network because I wasn’t completely sure,” she explained with a bashful smile, “You and this boy named Luke helped when I ran away from home before I made it safely to Camp Half-Blood.” Luke. Right. Thalia remembered the sandy-haired boy, whom she’d made her sacrifice for. Him and Annabeth. Who was telling her that she saw her in her dreams too, and knew who she was when she’d first approached Thalia on the network. “So...I died?” Thalia asked. Because that was what it’d felt like. It was a pretty awful dream, really. Percy glanced at Annabeth, not really sure what he should say to that. Thalia was Annabeth’s friend in the dreams and had been there when they’d arrived at Camp Half-Blood, so it was probably her place to answer Thalia’s question. He knew that whatever Thalia had done had caused Zeus to turn her into a pine tree and that her tree was what made up the border of Camp Half-Blood. He wondered if that meant that Thalia’s first set of dreams would be her last or if something happened later on, but what? She was a tree. Then again, she’d been turned into a tree using magic, so there was always the chance that something could happen to change it. “I don’t know if died is the right word. Your father saved you and turned you into a pine tree that helps protect the borders of the camp. I’m not sure if you’re alive in some sort of way or not, but I like to think you’re still alive in that tree. It’s so confusing with this magical parents thing. But I’m hoping it’s not forever,” she pointed out quickly in hopes to reassure her new friend. She wasn’t sure if she would see Thalia in human form again, but it seemed strange if she wouldn’t. “You’re talking about it like it’s all real,” Thalia protested, still confused by the whole concept of shared dreams and dreams that could produce wolves and things like that. “You know it didn’t actually happen, right? We’re just...linked through our dreams or something? ‘cause look - “ She gestured to herself. “Not a tree.” “They’re not real, but they feel real. They feel really real.” Percy knew how crazy it had seemed the first time he’d dreamt and the denial one could feel about them, “They can cause things to happen in real life though.” Percy had noticed people talking about illnesses and scars and things that had bled over into the waking world, Glancing around, Percy checked to see if anyone else was around or paying them any attention before reaching into his pocket for the pen that was always there, “I got this from my dreams.” “Yeah, we get strange items and things like that from our dreams. It’s confusing because it almost feels like you’re living a past life of some sort. I know it’s not really our life here and now because I’m obviously not the daughter of some Greek god and don’t fight monsters, but when everyone on the network is also having strange dreams it makes it hard to just write it off. It becomes part of your normal life,” She explained and hoped Thalia understood that part of it. "Yeah, it's just weird," Thalia said, shaking her head. People seemed to take it in stride, but it was all still new to her. She leaned forward to peer at Percy's pen. It looked like a normal pen to her. "What do you mean, you got it from your dreams? And what else happened?" Percy glanced at Annabeth then back at Thalia, wondering what everyone else would see when he took the cap off the pen. In the dreams there was The Mist that caused humans to not see things like Riptide or monsters when they attacked demigods, but Percy had no idea if The Mist was a thing in the waking world or not. Deciding to chance it, Percy took a step back so that neither of the girls would get hurt then pulled the cap off, Riptide replacing the pen in his hand, “Like I said, I got this from the dreams.” Annabeth couldn’t help but sit back a little bit as she watched Thalia’s reaction. It wasn’t something that normally happened in real life, but she was used to it from the dreams. Getting gifts still weirded her out, but it was effective in making the dreams seem more real, “I’ve got a Yankees cap from my dreams that turns me invisible. It’s the weirdest thing in the world, but it becomes normal the more you dream.” "What the hell!" Thalia looked around to see if anyone saw that, but people just walked right by. She stared at riptide. "How did you do that? And what do you mean, turn invisible?" Percy couldn’t help but smirk a little at Thalia’s reaction, “I just took the cap off. And if I happen to lose it, it’ll just appear back in my pocket again.” Instead of demonstrating that though, Percy pet the pen cap to the tip of the sword and it became a pen again then he held it out to Thalia, “Did you wanna make sure it’s not a trick or something?” “Exactly what I said. I am completely invisible when I’m wearing the hat. Just like Percy’s pen can turn into a sword. It’s all weird dream magic things,” she commented with a playful smile as Thalia exclaimed about the sword. It may take some convincing, but they seemed to put her on the right track to believing them. It was kind of nice to have another person in on their dream world. "So where's your cap?" Thalia asked as she took the pen. She studied it from all angles for a moment, half-wondering why she didn't have a cool dream thing. All she'd gotten from her dreams were lingering nightmares. Once she determined that the pen actually did seem like a pen, she carefully pulled the cap off. Percy watched as Thalia inspected the pen, “I’ve also got winged sneakers, a Camp Half-Blood t-shirt and Medusa’s Head.” He had been extremely freaked out when he’d woken up to find a burlap sack next to his bed with the head in it. “Did you have a weapon or anything in the dream? If you did, you might get it eventually.” “Mine’s in my room. I don’t bring it out with me because I don’t want to lose it,” she commented before listening to Percy tell her about the sneakers and head. The head still freaked her out and she wondered how many more things she would get from her dreams. She wasn’t very far in them, but it would be interesting how many more things they could get. Thalia shook her head, still trying to wrap her mind around it. She put the cap back on and handed the pen back to Percy. “I...had a shield? It had Medusa’s face on it, come to think of it. And a spear. I was kicking a lot of ass, actually, before they brought me down.” There was an edge of wonder in her voice. Percy took the pen and pocketed it, “You could get one or both of those then. I still don’t know how it’s possible for these things to show up, but they do.” He shrugged and glanced over and Annabeth once more before looking back at Thalia, “Also, if you have any abilities, thanks to you Godly parent, you might get those too. Poseidon is my dad, so I can breath underwater now and heal myself with water.” It was still strange, but Percy like being able to breath underwater now, considering he’d once almost drowned. “I’ve just got wisdom, intelligence, and some battle strategy from Athena. Not a lot of crazy super powers on my end, but that’s fine by me. I wonder if you’ll start to get things like that as well. We would totally be able to take on any of that crazy stuff that shows up in the OC from time to time,” Annabeth couldn’t quite remember what powers Thalia got from Zeus, but with the main God as her father she would get some great powers. "Powers?" Thalia sputtered. Magical items were one thing, but magical powers from dreams? She held up her hands. "This has officially gotten way too weird for me. Did you guys know all this when you met me?" “All I knew about you was what Annabeth, in the dreams, had said about your tree when I arrived at camp.” Percy told her, “We didn’t say anything before cause, you’re right, it’s crazy. You wouldn’t have believed us. I think it’s better for you to experience the dreams first.” Sometimes Percy could make a lot of sense. He wasn’t always as oblivious as Annabeth and others claimed, both in and out of the dreams. “Exactly. We wanted to be your friend first before the dreams started. This way you know you that we’re not crazy and we are here for you while you have these dreams,” Annabeth had to agree with Percy’s analysis of the friendship and the dreams, “If this is too much we can totally cut the dream talk and go get froyo or something.” "Yeah, let's get froyo," Thalia said immediately, because this was getting all too much for her, and she needed time to process. Once again Percy was glad that Annabeth was there, because had she not suggested froyo, he might have continued talking about the dreams until Thalia was ready to run away from them. “Froyo sounds like a great idea. Lets go.” |
