Sam had always been partial to spring, because it meant nicer weather and longer days and he was able to get more work done. Spring also meant weeding and replanting and trips to the nursery. Of course Sam had stopped by Navi’s nursery over the winter, because living in California meant they didn’t exactly close up shop between October and March, they just got less work done, but now that it was spring, Sam had a long list of plants and seeds and seedlings to get for various clients. He had a few special ones in mind to spruce up the front of Bag End and wanted to bring some over to Zelda and Link’s as well as get some more ideas for Legolas’ garden.
Coming to the nursery since Navi had moved was usually a quicker affair than it had been before, when he’d stop and talk to his friend or have a cup of tea with her while he was there, but now Navi’s cousin was working there and he had decided that while he was there shopping today, he’d introduce himself in person.
Merry only worked at the nursery for a few hours on her days off. It was less work and more following up on everyone and making sure that things were working out the way Navi wanted. She also got to talk to the flowers just how Navi would’ve wanted.
She was wearing a plain t-shirt and cutoff jean shorts, humming as she watered some daisies.
Sam was wandering around, list in hand, glancing at the various types of plants. Having studied plants in school and having accompanied his father many times even before he’d started working for him, Sam knew quite a number of plants by site alone, but there were still some that he needed help with. Spotting the girl, who was watering the daisies, Sam headed towards her, “Hi. I think I need some help.”
Smiling, Merry pushed her bangs out of her eyes. “Oh, sure, what can I help you with?” She set down the hose and smiled at him. She’d always been pretty good with customers.
When the girl turned, Sam realized that she wasn’t one of the usual people who worked at the nursery, which only meant one thing, “Merry?” It was strange, because when Sam thought of Merry, he thought of one half of the other two hobbits that were in his dreams, “I’m Sam.” He hoped this was Navi’s cousin, otherwise he was going to look crazy.
Her smile grew more broad, and she nodded. “Sam, right?” Sticking her hand out, she offered it to him to shake. “Navi told me about you, she said you’d end up bringing in a list.” She chuckled a little to herself, shaking her head. “I’m good with flowers, but man, I don’t know how she did it.”
Sam laughed and nodded as he shook her hand, “Well she was right. I’ll be coming in more often now too since it’s spring.” He pulled the list out, more than half of it checked off, the ones left were plants or flowers that Sam wasn’t as familiar with as the others, “How is Navi and the family doing?”
Merry might not have been able to speak plant like her cousin, but she could read labels really well. “She’s good! So’s her husband, and so’s the baby, and they’re probably going to end up making like, eighty more.” Merry rolled her eyes. “Non stop gross naked times for them.”
Sam laughed as he recalled something that Navi had said when she was pregnant, “Her husband wants to start a sports team with the kids, right?” Somehow he wouldn’t have been surprised if he got his wish. “I’m glad to hear that they’re doing well though. I’ve missed Navi since she left.”
“Ohhhyeah,” Merry laughed. “He’s super English.” Merry wrinkled her nose. “She was the one who helped me figure out good places to live while I do my residency down here. You know her, so you must know how she likes to help people.” Merry chuckled to herself.
Sam nodded, “Yeah, I know all about that. She’s an extremely helpful person,” He smiled and slid his hands into his pockets, “Residency? Are you a doctor?” Sam knew that there were quite a few doctors on Valarnet, which was good for those who wound up with injuries or wounds as a result of the dreams.
“I’m a vet,” Merry smiled back. “I really like animals, and I want to help them more.” It was life’s cruel irony that she was too busy for a pet of her own. “I take it you work with plants? Navi said you’d need a billion.”
“That’s pretty awesome. There’s a couple of other vets and things on Valarnet,” Sam didn’t have a pet either, but that didn’t mean he didn’t pay attention when they posted, “Yeah, I do. My father owns a gardening business. I handle a lot of our big clients.”
“I want to work with large breed dogs eventually, but a year of general practice isn’t a bad idea.” Merry liked that there were other vets on the network; it meant she could use her network for its intended purpose. “What do you need help with today?”
“That’s cool.” Sam had found that Valarnet had come in awfully handy at times and he was sure that it’d come in handy for Merry as well, “There’s a couple plants one of our clients wants that I don’t actually recognize, which is saying something since I studied plants in college, but I guess I can’t know everything.”
“Nah, if you knew everything life would get boring and not worth living, you know?” Merry smiled and started to look for the plants that Sam needed.
Sam laughed, nodding, “And then people could get annoyed with me for knowing everything.” He followed Merry as they looked for the few plants he was looking for; the rest he would grab before he left. “So did you decide on your own to help out here or did Navi convince you to do it?”
“Oh, I told her I’d do it for as long as I could. It’s good to get out some. I don’t want to get stuck at the clinic too often.” Merry smiled, putting some seedlings on a push cart.
“That’s a good way or looking at it.” Sam said as he continued following her around, “I’m sure Navi is happy to have family looking after the place. I mean, everyone else here has been great, but there’s just something about family.”
“Of course! She’s got a friend living in her grandpa’s house, and me looking after the nursery. I’m just glad that she’s so sensible and smart. Owning a business and running it remotely is hard.” Merry smiled at Sam as well.
“Navi’s lucky to have such good and loyal friends and family,” Sam said, smiling. Sam knew all about working with family since he’d been working for his dad for quite awhile now, “Every now and then, my dad tells me that he doesn’t know what he’d do if he couldn’t rely on me.”
“She’s so nice, she’s always had people like that around her.” Merry found another item on the list and put it onto the cart, grinning. “You work with your dad? That’s really nice.”
Sam nodded, “He’s owned his own gardening business for as long as I can remember. I always enjoyed watching him and gardening myself, so there was really no question about what I was going to do as I got older,” Of course now Sam wondered if his chosen profession and skills had anything to do with the fact that he was also a gardener in his dreams.
“My parents are teachers.” Merry smiled at Sam, thinking the idea of a family business was nice. “They always thought I’d be one too, but nope. I always wanted to be a vet.”
“That’s pretty impressive.” Sam said in reference to her parents both being teachers. “And I’m sure you’ll be a great vet.” Of course Sam didn’t know how she was with the medical stuff, but she was extremely personable and he just had a feeling that she would make a good vet.
“I’m having a lot of fun. Residency is basically like being a vet, but you’re still learning. It’s basically making sure that I can handle the ropes before they just sorta push me off, you know?” It totally made sense to Merry.
“That makes complete sense.” Sam nodded, “They’ve gotta make sure you’re ready. I mean, you could read what you need to do in a book, but reading and doing are two completely different things.”
“Exactly. And sometimes it’s a life or death thing, so they want to make sure I’m okay under pressure.” Merry smiled. “I’m sure it’s like that with plants, just slower.”
“Sometimes, it can be.” Sam smirked as he continued following Merry, “Maybe not so much with the life or death, but then again, with certain plants you have to use certain kinds of fertilizer or plant food otherwise they could die.”
“Exactly. Either way, you have to know your stuff first, then practice it.” Merry could see why her cousin liked Sam.
