Tifa was looking forward to meeting Lilo; ever since she’d found out that there was a professional surfer nearby she’d been itching to get some tips. She had no false hope that she was anywhere near as good but she’d like to be a little better than she was. And of course the opportunity to watch a pro was something she couldn’t let pass her by.
The other woman had agreed to meet her one morning so Tifa had gotten up early to make sure she didn’t make her wait and so now Tifa was waiting instead. She looked out over the sea and smiled, she always loved the feeling of being so close to the water. It felt peaceful to her, even when the wind was swirling the sea.
Lilo was sitting by her surfboard watching her dogs play in the waves. She had on a wetsuit, just because when she got far out into the water, it could still be a bit chilly. But when she saw a girl walking toward her, Lilo smiled. “Tifa?”
“Hey” Tifa replied nodding, “You must be Lilo, pleased to meet you and thanks for agreeing to come out here” she added holding out her hand to the other woman.
“Of course!” Lilo hopped up from where she’d been sitting, reaching out to shake Tifa’s hand. She always appreciated girls that wanted to surf, and anyone who tried to be better at something. It was why Lilo practiced as much as she did.
Just because something was primarily a ‘man’ sport or activity she didn’t see why girls couldn’t or shouldn’t have a go. Tifa really wasn’t one to let gender stereotypes define her, “So how did you end up going pro?” she asked, “Apart from obviously being good I mean”
“I grew up surfing,” Lilo smiled, strapping her board to her ankle. “I moved out here for school, and I was just going through a lot of stuff. Someone from Billabong saw me surfing, and they approached me.” She shrugged a little; some people had said that she had been given the offer because she was “hot”. Lilo didn’t think she was hot, but she hoped her ability had shut those people up.
“Thank god for talent spotters” Tifa said, “I have to admit I looked you up on youtube and you have some incredible moves. I’m pretty excited to see you in action” she smiled. Lilo was definitely hot but her talent was quite obvious.
“Yeah, it’s honestly the best thing I’ve ever done. I love my job. And in the off season, I free dive.” Anything to keep her lung capacity up.
“You free dive too?” Tifa grinned at her, “You are far too cool to be hanging around with me. I can see it now I’m going to fall off my board and completely embarrass myself in front of the cool kid. It’ll be like school all over again” she said with a chuckle.
“Pffffft,” Lilo said. Well, she didn’t say it, but it was a noise she made that expressed disapproval. “I have never been, nor will I ever be, the cool kid. I got teased in school all the time. I’ve always been the weirdo. School’s the worst sometimes, which sucks because learning is the best.”
“Kids can be shitty” Tifa nodded in agreement, “And for the record I’m glad you weren’t a cool kid, the so called ‘weirdos’ are much more fun to hang with. I was one too”
“We’re the ones that at least know stuff.” Lilo laughed. “I always hung out with the geeks. I read too much to be popular.”
“Now that is true” she agreed, “There was a boy at home, he’s my best friend now, but he used to get picked on so I’d follow him around to make sure he was left alone. That kind of killed my popularity” she grinned, obviously it hadn’t been an issue for her.
“Yeah, I had to punch a lot of people,” Lilo replied cheerfully. That hadn’t really bothered her; she’d always been a bit of a scrapper, even as a toddler. “You’d be surprised how much people will leave you alone after you bite someone.”
“Why did I not think of that!?” she said, “I’m sure it would have kept people away. But I went the punching route too”
Lilo reached out for a high five. Chick surfers who hit people had to stay together, right? She grinned and stood up. “You ready to go out? There should be some decent swells today.”
Tifa returned the high five with her new friend before nodding, “Let’s go. I’m ready to learn from the master” she grinned.
“Watch, I’ll wipe on a baby wave,” Lilo laughed. But she was running toward the surf, hopping onto her board and paddling out with ease.
