Pansy invited her girls over. She wanted to catch up with Raq, as it’d been too long since she’d seen the girl. And Katniss always needed things to do besides work and school, right? They could… do each others’ nails or gossip, or… whatever. Pansy wasn’t picky. She also wasn’t girly. Beer and movies, possibly video games, that sounded better to her, anyway. Though, she did have some nail polish around somewhere…
Raquel had been excited when she flipped open her phone and saw a text from Pansy. She hadn’t seen her in quite some time. She had been spending many nights on her couch and felt like she needed to get away for awhile; you could only mooch on one person for so long! Still, she knew Pansy was more like family than anything else and happily accepted the invitation.
She showed up a little early, giving the familiar door a knock and clasped her hands behind her back, glancing around as she waited for Pansy to answer.
Pansy pulled the door open about thirty seconds after the knock. She grinned. “Howdy, stranger. Where’ve you been?” She asked, stepping aside to let Raq in from the cold. “Katniss should be here any minute.”
Katniss was, of course, fashionably late. If she cared about fashion that is. Never one to refuse an invitation of Pansy's, she'd wanted to be here sooner but had got caught helping her sister with her homework. About ten minutes after the invitation had implied she should be there, she rolled up to the door and knocked.
Pansy answered the door again when Katniss was there. She grinned at the sight of her friend. “Hey, hey, the gang’s all here.” She said. Whatever the song or saying was. She admitted Katniss, and closed the door behind her. “What’s up? I’ve got video games, drinks, food… there’s nachos.”
Raq made her way in, having not been to visit Pansy in some time. The apartment was so familiar to her that she walked right in, placing her backpack on the ground and out of the way. She heard the knock again and peered around the corner, watching as Katniss walked in.
“Heya Kat!” She grinned, giving her a small wave.
“Hey Raquel!” Katniss called to her friend around the corner, giving her a wave and a smile. “You mentioned nachos?” she asked Pansy.
“Nachos!” Pansy grinned. “In the oven! Get ‘em while they’re hot? And there’s beers in the fridge.” Pansy was a big time underage drinker. “Or uh… that girly shit that my brother in law drinks. You can have anything you like.”
Raquel smiled, happy to have good friends around, a roof over her head, and food. Not that she was completely homeless, but there had been times when she had choose between a place to stay a dinner that night. A fact she happily left out for her friends.
“Sounds great!” She followed the two fo them into the kitchen, opening the fridge to poke around. “Beer or girly drink for anyone?”
“Beer’s good for me,” Katniss said, leaning against the kitchen table casually. “So what’s been happening?”
“Surprise me.” Pansy said. She moved to the oven and pulled on her potholders so she could get the nachos out. She’d made enough for a small army. Or three hungry teenagers. “Nothing. My life is boring, you know that.” Though, Pansy used to have all kinds of fun stories. Lately she hadn’t been doing much.
Raquel grabbed two beers for her friends, choosing one of the hard lemonades for herself. She shut the door with her foot, walking over and handing the drinks out, taking a seat at the table. She glanced between Katniss and Pansy, opening her drink and giving a shrug of her own. “Nothing much here either. Still wanting to try and get into UC Irvine this fall, but haven’t really started on the application…” She let the sentence trail off, taking a sip of her drink.
“How about you Kat?”
“Same I guess,” Katniss shrugged, accepting a drink from Raquel. “Really need to think about what I’m doing next year too, just….I’ve been having these weird dreams,” she picked at the label on the bottle idly.
Pansy raised an eyebrow at the end of her gulp of beer, and set it down on the counter. Then she went about putting the nachos onto plates for the three of them. “Well, I can help you with money, Raq.” She said, shrugging her shoulders. Magic did really wonderful things when it came to money. “...and… what sort of strange dreams?”
Raquel rolled her eyes at Pansy, although she definitely appreciated the thought. She didn’t want Pansy to always be doing things for her, she wanted to show she could do things on her own. True, things were a little tight and she went to Pansy for help, but for college she wanted to do it on her own. “I’m fine,” she said. “I just have a little more to save up. Besides, you help me with a place to stay when I need it!” She shrugged her shoulders as if it was no big deal.
She took a sip of her drink, glancing at Kat when she mentioned the dreams. It was all the talk on the Valarnet; people getting dreams that seemed so real, as if it were another life they had lived. She hadn’t had any yet, but loved hearing about everyone else’s. She leaned an elbow on the table, glancing at her friend, hoping it wasn’t the kind of sad or intense dreams everyone else seemed to be having.
Katniss eyed the nachos as Pansy dished them up onto plates, figuring they were still too hot to nibble on just yet. “It’s hard to explain...I dream about a desolate world, divided into districts that can’t talk to each other. And every year they have this thing they call a Reaping…” she trailed off, gazing at nothing in particular as she thought about the dreams.
At least, Raq could stay on her sofa. Pansy didn’t mind that. And she was more than willing to buy food and stuff. She’d spend the Malfoy fortune even if she wasn’t a Malfoy by blood. She brought the nachos out into the living room, motioning for the other girls to follow her, then plopped down on the sofa.
“A Reaping? What’s that? Like, reaping wheat, or whatever? Grim Reaper?” Pansy asked, then started in on her food.
