Faye still couldn’t quite believe that Vala was a six year old who had somehow ended up in the care of her and Merle. She’d looked after Glimmer of course but she’d been older and wiser and not as whiney as a toddler was. She hadn’t ever thought about children, they just didn’t enter into her plans. But now she found that it wasn’t really a choice. She wasn’t about to abandon her best friend.
“Faaaaaaaye?” Vala whined pitifully from the kitchen. “I can’t reach the cupboard for a drink!” she complained, pouting at the inanimate object even though no-one could see her. She hated being little.
Merle had long ago accepted that strange things would happen in this place. It was best to accept it, or risk going beyond insane. However, a woman he’d previously slept with who he considered a close friend turning into a child….that presented challenges.
“Damn, why couldn’t the blue-goo zombies come back?” he wondered under his breath, walking into the kitchen. Merle had never put much thought into the idea of kids; he never wanted one of his own, nor did he particularly dislike or fail to get along with them. Vala was, he had to admit, a cute kid. It was strangely easy to separate her entirely from the woman he’d had a threesome with. It was like a moving photograph, and he knew she’d be back to normal soon enough.
But Merle and Faye as impromptu parents? Now that was a scary thought.
“I ain’t sure about serving you alcohol,” he told the young Vala. “I know you like yourself a drink, Val, but….I dunno, Virgin Mary? White wine spritzer?”
Faye laughed and rolled her eyes as she entered the kitchen, “There’s juice or soda for her babe” she told Merle moving forward and scooping Vala up so she could reach the cupboard herself, “Which do you want?” she asked her. She’d never do it for her, she remembered hating that when she was a kid. She’d always been independent.
“Juice!” Vala cheered and clapped her hands together once Faye had her up in the air. “Soda makes my nose bubbly,” she told Faye, reaching forward to grasp the cupboard handle and open it.
“You are coming across as a major milf,” said Merle in a low voice with a little chuckle. It was strange seeing Faye with a kid (and it would be terrifying if the situation were different in any way).
Faye let Vala reach her glass, shooting Merle a grin and a wink before she put Vala back down again. "Only time that term will ever be able to be applied to me" she replied amused.
"What's a milf?" Vala asked as she moved over to the centre counter to put her glass down. She headed to the fridge to fetch herself the large juice bottle and returned to her glass to try and pour it herself.
Merle almost told her, then remembered she was a child. “It’s a….country. Where milflish people come from,” he said with a slight struggle.
Faye snorted before coughing, “Yes, exactly and that’s all it’ll be until you’re older” she said, “which hopefully won’t be too far away” she added quietly before moving to hover near Vala hoping to forestall any potential spillages.
“A country?” Vala asked, eyes focused on the bottle in her hands. “Where?” her tongue poking out as she concentrated really hard.
This, thought Merle, was just plain shitty. “It’s, uh….” he began, grasping for the correct words and then landing on a sentence that was both the best and worst answer. “Ask your mother.” He indicated Faye.
The look Faye shot Merle would strike fear in most people, but Merle wasn't most people. "A country in Europe, near where all those eastern ones nobody is entirely sure about and can never point to on the map" she told Vala.
“Oh,” Vala said as she righted the bottle, pleased to have done it herself. “So why are you Milfish?” she asked, looking up at Faye innocently.
Merle covered his mouth to stop himself laughing. “Damn, uh...that’s a good question, uh….” he began uncertainly. “Hey, you want to watch TV?”
“Yes, go watch some nice kids tv” Faye told her nodding, “Find the good ones with sing-a-longs and dances and things so Merle can help you” she added wickedly.
"Yay!" Vala cheered, throwing her hands in the air and rushing over to Merle. She grabbed his hand and started pulling him to the front room. "Come on Merle! Let's go sing and dance!" she grinned happily, juice forgotten.
