Who: Elphaba, Luthien/Dior and Glinda What: Glinda meeting Dior for the first time Where: Elphaba and Luthien’s house When: Late March Rating: PG Status: Complete
Elphaba was tidying some of Dior’s toys away, waiting for Glinda to arrive. She didn’t really know why she was nervous, she just was and so she was tidying and when Glinda arrived she would make tea and prepare biscuits and snacks and whatever else she could think of.
Having a three year old around was proving to be an adventure and one that Luthien was happy to embark upon. The modern world was vastly different from her experiences in the dreams and so she was careful to only use that as a loose guide. She hummed to herself as she helped Elphaba. The house was always full of music.
Glinda was looking forward to seeing her friends and little Dior too. She’d brought a few toys and books with her for the child, how could she not after all. Raising her hand she knocked on the door and waited for Elphie or Luthien to answer.
Elphaba looked up at the sound of a knock on the door. Hurriedly placing some of the children’s books on the side, she brushed a hand over Dior’s head as she moved past where he was playing in the middle of the front room. She trotted to the door and tucked some hair behind her ear before opening the door. “Hey, come on in,” she smiled at her friend, stepping back to allow her in.
Luthien stood, smoothing out her skirt with her hands as she did so. She smiled charmingly at Glinda. "Good morning." She actually felt a little nervous. This was the first time introducing her son to someone who wasn't Elphaba.
“Hey, how are you both?” Glinda asked as she entered the room, smiling at the child who glanced up from playing but didn’t seem too interested in the new woman. “I brought some presents, I hope that’s okay” she said handing over the wrapped packages.
“We’re fine, adjusting as best as we can,” Elphaba smiled. She looked to Lúthin for guidance on the presents Glinda was offering. Dior wasn’t her child after all, at least she wasn’t sure if there were any boundaries Lúthien might want yet.
“Presents are fine, he’s still trying to adjust to moving across the ocean.” Luthien took the presents and looked them over. She thought that Glinda had a good eye and smiled. “these are wonderful, thank you. Dior! Look what your auntie Glinda brought you!”
The boy toddled over as Luthien squatted down in front of him. “What do we say?”
“Than you.”
She grinned, proudly.
Glinda moved to bend down too, “You’re welcome sweetie” she said softly with a smile for the child. He looked very sweet and she thought she could see Luthien in him. “Would you like to show me what you’ve been playing? It looks a lot of fun” she said, grateful when the child nodded and led her over to the toys he had on the floor.
Elphaba smiled as the little boy thanked Glinda and showed her what he had been doing. Seeing that Glinda was all right, she headed to the kitchen to make the drinks. “Tea alright for everyone?” she called over her shoulder.
“Tea is wonderful!” Luthien took a seat and watched Dior play with Glinda. It was a wonderful sight that made her feel warmth throughout her body. Getting her son back had been the best thing she’d ever done. She could thank Elphaba for that. “He’s such a bright boy.”
Glinda was animated as Dior showed her his toys but she was gentler, softer, noticing the quiet calmness of the young boy. As he continued playing she looked over at Luthien, “He’s beautiful Luthien, he’s going to thrive here with the both of you”
Elphaba smiled to herself while making the tea as she heard Glinda talking to Lúthien. Her fianceé was thrilled to have her son living with them, but she thought they were both still a little apprehensive about getting it right. Elphaba certainly was. She loved the little boy, he was adorable, sweet and smart, but she wasn’t technically his parent. When he got older, if he needed disciplining would she be able to discipline him? Should she? It was one of the conversations that she and Lúthien would have to have in the future, but for now she was happy to enjoy the time she had with her family. She came back through with all their teas, placing them on high tables near everyone but away from the baby’s reach.
“Hopefully, I’m even thinking of giving up work for a while. Stay home and help teach him, freelance for a bit,” she shrugged as she sat down on the couch next to Lúthien. It wasn’t such a scary thought now. She was feeling pretty confident about herself right now, like anything was possible.
Luthien slid her hand into Elphaba's lap, resting it on her leg and stroking with her fingers a little lightly. "The only thing I fear are if he dreams. While there's much beauty in mine, there is a great deal of darkness as well. He is still so young. I want to protect him from the world." All the worlds. With everything that happened and everything that came from the dreams, she had reason to fear. But she was also strong, and she could face anything, especially to defend her family.
Ruffling the childs hair Glinda smiled as she moved to sit closer to her friends, “I don’t know if it’s any comfort or not but I haven’t heard of such a young child dreaming” she said, “So maybe you won’t have to worry or at least not yet anyway” she offered a small reassuring smile.
“I hope so,” Elphaba replied, gazing down at the little boy. “He’s just a little ball of optimism and hope,” she smiled at the boy, watching him playing. “I want to teach him so much, I just...I can’t tell you what, but so much,” she shrugged, hand squeezing Lúthien’s unconsciously.
“I am sure there are many things he can learn from you, just as there are things he will learn from me.” Luthien squeezed her hand back. “That is what a partnership is for. That is what we have, a partnership of love.” Married, as far as she was concerned, in the heart.
Glinda watched them and felt her heart swell, it was humbling to be witness to such love, she clasped her hands in front of her chest and sniffed a little, “Oh, my goodness. That little boy is about the luckiest child in the world to have you two as his parents” she told them with a watery smile.
Elphaba smiled, blushing and dropping her chin to hide it. "And you as an aunt, of course," she deflected.
“Yes, you as an auntie.” A really weird family, Luthien decided. But still a family.
