I was wondering though. With all my sharp edges and often malevolent attitude

When: Recently
Where: A place!
Status: Complete
Rating: Pg-13
Maia was both nervous, and not. Nervous, because a lot had changed since she’d last seen Morrigan, and yet not because there wasn’t any reason to feel that way. She’d long ago stopped dreaming, but her life had been thrown upside down with the Blight in the mountains and stopping the Archdemon.
And Maker she wished she could drink.
Getting out of bed this morning wasn’t particularly fun for Morrigan. She’d had a long night flying home and all that travel took about a day off her life. But despite the eight hours of sleep that she had, she hardly felt rested and rejuvenated. Quite the opposite actually. But there was one thing that made her desire to get out of bed a bit worth while.
Dressing casually, Morrigan grabbed her things and headed downtown to meet up with Maia. The thought was enough to put a proper smile on her face.
It was a good time for a proper lunch, and at least the cravings hadn't set in yet. Maia decided she'd wait awhile before telling Morrigan 'so your mother's grimoire showed up and I'm pregnant with a demon child, how was your vacation, love?'
No, she most certainly wouldn't say that, even if it was tempting to phrase it exactly like that. Instead, she ordered some tea and waited.
Morrigan didn’t arrive much longer after Maia, poking her head into the establishment and smiling a bit when she saw the woman. Walking over, she took the seat across from her, “I’m sorry I wasn’t here sooner. I think my sleep habits are going to take a day or two to get back into a regular schedule. I keep waking up around one or two despite what time I may go to bed.”
When the waitress came back by, Morrigan ordered some tea as well, then turned her attentions back to Maia, “So, what have you been up to lately?”
“Oh, this and that,” Maia said with a laugh. She felt herself relax in Morrigan’s presence (which was odd, one would think one needed to be tense around a Wilds Witch). “How was your extended holiday? I trust you enjoyed yourself?”
“Quite, though a part of me wished I could have stayed longer. I feel much more at ease when I find myself out in the middle of nowhere. Much more calming, and I feel like I can think clearer.” Morrigan smiled as she finished, shrugging lightly, “I have grown to enjoy company though, so a select few would be missed if I were to stay. Besides, who else would come to cheer on your performances.”
It felt good to let go, and she felt an odd ease whenever she was around Maia. Much like having a conversation with an old friend. There were no expectations, and she could see there being no judgements between herself and the lovely professor.
“So you spoke of some goings on while I was away?”
"I wouldn't mind a few months in the middle of nowhere. Less students and less oddness." Maia picked up her tea and took a sip. It served to calm her some what overzealous nerves. "And I appreciate that, it's gotten a bit droll and I need to come up with a way to liven things up. Perhaps you've some suggestions, love?"
Morrigan’s critical eye looked over Maia, trying to read from her appearance what she might find tickling her fancy. Leaning on her elbows at the edge of the table, she folded her hands in front of her face with her index fingers up and pressed to her lips in contemplation, “I could come up with quite a few ideas, but you need a certain kind of adventure to keep you entertained. Perhaps a nature hike, animal watching out in the woods. I’ve taken to sitting in hunter’s shooting perches to simply watch the bears and deer as of late...”
Maia looked at the other woman over her teacup, the object disquising anything her lips might be doing. "Adventure is my middle name. Maia Adventure Shenanigans Amell. Esquire."
“Shenanigans is a rather apropo term.” She laughed and took up her own cup, “It is good to see you well though. I was worried everyone might have moved out of the area by the time I returned.”
"I thought about it." And then she'd almost died once or twice, but she didn't say that outloud. Setting her cup down she gave Morrigan her most brilliant smile. "Tell me about bear watching."
Morrigan nearly cackled at the question, but nodded, “It’s interesting. Especially when they’re getting ready to fight with either another bear or they’re taking down another animal. Like a fox, a deer, rabbits…”
“Poor bunnies..” Maia sighed dramatically. “I had a pet bunny once but the poor thing caught a cold and died. I requested a viking funeral. Took me three shots but I got the little boat to catch fire!”
“That sounds like something you would do.” The thought of a young Maia setting off a funeral pyre didn’t strike her as odd. Instead, it was rather fitting indeed. “You were probably a somewhat well behaved handful as a child, weren’t you?”
Maia burst out laughing. “If by well behaved you mean a little hellion, than yes! I don’t think my mum had a handle on me at all. I’ve had an overactive imagination my whole life, really.”
“What’s terribly sad is that some people discourage their children from having such. Imagination is important. At least I think so. Life would be so terribly boring without it, don’t you think?” Morrigan smiled and sipped on her drink.
"It led me into my field, though I think I'm predisposed towards that sort of thing." She grinned, trailing a finger around the lip of her cup. "Even in my dreams I crave learning new things."
“And what is it that you crave today then, Maia?” Morrigan may have giggled a little as she ordered something for them to munch on. Of the people she met her, Maia truly was one of the few that set her at ease.
Maia just smirked at Morrigan. Oh the things she craved...But she had Pam and that was enough. "Something sweet, with a bit of a bite to it, I think!"
“Hmm...I take it you’re the type that enjoys mexican and Indian food, aren’t you?” She merely smiled slyly at Maia before she ordered the pineapple salsa along with what she already ordered. “So what’s on the agenda for this weekend?”
"Plan some new teaching methods," Maia replied. "Work out some issues with my girl. Look into some things for some major life changes." She was reluctant to share more, even with Morrigan. That was like asking to be mocked.
“Major life changes? That does sound rather serious. Are you and your woman planning on getting married and scampering off into the sunset?” It didn’t come out as cruel, just...extremely sarcastic. She’d yet had a relationship period. It wasn’t like her to ever carry one on as people rarely stayed in the first place.
"Maker no." Maia wrinkled up her nose. "I don't ever want to get married, much rather live in sin. Really, just being with a single person happens pretty rarely for me. Very few people I want enough to do that!"
“Are you polyamorous then? Or is this just your first crack at monogamy?” Her words weren’t rude or malicious. She was simply curious about Maia...which was rather rare for her.
"In the little box that says 'sex' I always check 'yes' so it's more like I don't do long term relationships." Maia shrugged a shoulder, not at all embarrassed. "I'm what you'd technically call a slut. To it's definitely the latter."
“I prefer the term opportunist. I’m more about living life as opposed to idly wishing about things that could have been. For a time I would feel the need to stay home, not go out, but once I got a taste of the real world I’ve been all for self discovery.” Morrigan smiled a bit and munched on some chips.
“And what sorts of things have you discovered about yourself?” Maia raised her eyebrow, and sat back to wait for Morrigan to sate the Warden’s curiosity.
“That I am usually a much stronger individual on my own then in a group..” That was a flat out lie but she wasn’t about to play down her willpower. If anything, Morrigan was headstrong. “And that I’m more than capable of being self-sustaining then most.”
“Mm,” Maia said. She knew better, oh did she know better but that would be telling and she didn’t want to scare Morrigan off. “I believe that. Must be kind of lonely though, don’t you think? Isn’t it better to know you can make it on your own, but not have to if you don’t have to?”
That made Morrigan shift uncomfortably in her seat. She’d never “needed” anyone. Her mother had taught her that she shouldn’t rely on anyone but her own self no matter what the situation. Because at the end of the day, the only one to look out for you, is you. The words still rang hot in her ears.
Forcing a smile, she simply laughed it off, lifting her cup, “Now what kind of adventure would that be, hmm?”
"Oh, just the best sort," Maia countered, her eyes suddenly sharp. "After all, all the best stories have the hero and their companions. Where would Luke Skywalker be without Han Solo, hm?"
“Hey, Han was truly the hero when you think about it.” Morrigan’s lips curled up in a wicked smile, “Dashing good looks, amazing with a weapon, by far the best lines in the entire movie. And he had an amazing ship….and a wookie.”
"And best of all he got the princess," Maia pointed out, helpfully. "That's the important part. And the princess could kick his arse too if she wanted to." This was, apparenetly important. Maia believed in both partners in a relationship be able to kick arse together.
“You’ve got a point there. But I can’t say I’m someone who works well with others. I’m rather...sharp tongued in most cases and that generally rubs people the wrong way. So a team of one usually works for me” It was true, she’d never found a group of people, or even one other person, that she found herself connecting with.
Except Maia so far. She was different. And there was an odd sense of belonging there…
"Most people need to learn to have thicker skins. But then people with sharp tongues need to learn to dull the edge just a tad. Life is a give and take. Me, mostly I just like to have fun." She winked at Morrigan.
“Ah, a woman after my own heart. But I cannot help the subtle incompetence of some people..nor can my tongue’s sharpness be lessened for those. I’m afraid that is just who I am I suppose. I can’t say society and I have always gotten along.” She smiled at Maia, then stopped for a brief moment, obviously thinking about something.
“I was wondering though. With all my sharp edges and often malevolent attitude, why do you keep me around as a..friend?”
“No, I suppose you’re right. You aren’t one to get along with society, but then, society needs more people like you to poke holes in the bullshite.” Maia studies Morrigan’s face before answering her question. “Oh, because deep down I think there’s this soft squishy center and I want to see the look on your face when I find it. But really, you’re intelligent and interesting. Isn’t that enough?”
It took quite a bit to hide how that made Morrigan feel. She wasn’t one used to compliments. Especially ones about her character. Or ones made in future hopes of getting to know her more. Her pale cheeks mottled with color as she averted her honey colored eyes, her lower lip disappeared for a brief moment before she finally gained back the strength to look at someone who saw her as far greater then she herself did.
“That’s very...nice of you. To think that way about me. I...appreciate it. I do.” There was an awkward silence there until she added, “I suppose I feel the same when it comes to you. Not the squishy part, but finding out more about you, I suppose...”
Was Morrigan blushing? Morrigan was blushing and Maia counted that as a major victory. "Oh I assure you I'm soft and squishy too."
But she was glad that Morrigan wanted to know her better. Of all those she dreamed about, Morrigan was one of a few she'd felt closest to. She never really knew if Morrigan felt the same, but she'd trusted her enough to let her follow her through the mirror.
“Are you certain about that? Your stomach muscles may say differently.” The tease was merely deflection but the smile behind it was real. There was something just oddly familiar about the other woman. She just couldn’t put her finger on it just yet.
Maia laughed and smacked her palm against her stomach. “Why don’t you come over and see for yourself.”
“Oh! An invitation even! I dare say I may take you up on that offer if you’re not careful, dear professor.” Morrigan looked rather snarky than usual, her eyes glinting with a bit of mischief. “Then again, I may have to watch my hands. You did say you were taken, or did that change while I was gone?”
“Still taken, which is a feat, let me tell you,” Maia said, cheerfully. While a large part of her would have killed (or done bloodmagic) to have Morrigan touch her, she didn’t want to hurt Pam. She kept her face as even as possible. “So you’ll have to keep your hands to safe places, love.”
Morrigan pouted, part out of truth though she wouldn’t admit it. Maia was gorgeous, and not only physically attractive. Her mind was sharp and her wit doubled that at times. “Such a shame. Well if that ever changes do let me know.”
Smirking, she finished her tea and relaxed a little more in her chair, looking around, “This is a nice little place...I take it it’s one of your favorites, is it not?”
Maia looked momentarily like she hadn't at all expected Morrigan's reaction and she really didn't know how to a) deal with it or b) believe it as being anything more than Morrigan's ability to pull her leg.
"Yes, it's very lovely. I like the view, it's calming." There. Best to ignore it.
Trailing her tongue over her teeth in an almost predatory fashion, she looked back over at Maia with a smirk, “I think I should show you one of my favorite places sometime. I mean, we can’t do what you always want to do every time we meet up.” It was a soft tease, but a tease nonetheless.
Maia could say that the one thing about being monogamous that she missed was the flirting, except she flirted like crazy anyway. “I’d like that. Next time it’s your choice, love.” She could take the teasing better than most. Except for that teeth thing, that teeth thing was unfair.
Biting her lower lip, Morrigan nodded and paid for her tea. “That’s more then reasonable. I shall see you this saturday then? I need my dose of mythological hand puppets. I feel I cannot go on without them.”
Standing, she moved over to Maia’s cheek and gave her a quick kiss just next to her ear, “Do try and stay out of trouble until then, yes?” Grabbing up her bag, she looked back at Maia, winked, and then headed for the door, hips swaying.
Maia’s gaze followed Morrigan out the door, then she picked up her tea and downed the rest of it like she was in the desert. “Shite, I need to find that woman someone before Pam kills me.”
