It had been a while since Ruby had been on a set, but it was all starting to feel like old hat and things were coming back to her. As one of the main characters and not just an extra Ruby was getting used to the idea of having her own trailer for use. But she still used the regular hair and makeup trailer instead of forcing someone to come to her trailer, mostly because she wanted to interact with as many people as she could. This morning was no different as she grabbed her script off the table in her trailer and walked out to the hair and makeup trailer. Between working at the diner, memorizing lines, and training for the movie she was feeling exhausted, so she walked in with a yawn.
There was an open chair towards the middle that no one had claimed yet, so she made her way over. She sat down and opened up her script as she waited for one of the stylists to arrive. She was probably ungodly early, so she didn’t want to bother anyone if they were just getting ready for today. At least it would give her time to read over her script.
James had just finished with another actress with a minor role and was moving on. He came to Ruby’s chair and grinned. “Good morning, Miss Ruby.” He had entirely too much energy for his own good. He had walked into the trailer at 4:30am, in time for the 5:00am call for a few of the actors. A few cups of coffee in, and he was going strong.
He was used to most of the cast being tired when they sat in the chair for the morning session. He was like a built in wake up call. “So let’s see what’s on the schedule today,” he continued, pretending to look at the cast sheet, which described what each member would be getting for the day. He actually already knew the answer as he had studied it in the morning. “Ohhhh, this is good. Today your character goes crazy and shaves half of her hair, and gives the rest spikes. Let’s get right to that.” He was completely joking. It actually called for a nice updo, but he knew he would draw at least a look from her.
“Hey James,” Ruby loved how energetic he was this morning because she was hoping it would rub off on her. He was a great walk up call and she always enjoyed seeing him in the morning. But she always brought along a cup of coffee anyway for an extra pick-me-up. However, when he revealed what he was going to do with her hair she managed to choke on her coffee a little bit. It was actually quite believable and she looked at him in the mirror, her eyebrows raised, “Oh god. What? That sounds a little intense.”
James wanted to break down and laugh hysterically, but he managed a normal appearance. He walked to the table and picked up a razor, snapping a blade on it in a business as usual approach. “We could cut it first. It would be a lot for the razor to get through if we don’t.” He was holding back so hard. When he turned away, he had to fix the smile that came for just a moment.
Ruby couldn’t help but let her eyes go a little more wide as she watched James with that razor. He had to be joking, right? It wouldn’t be possible that she would have to cut off all her hair basically because Tom never said anything about that. When he turned away she furrowed her brow and tried to see if he was joking with her, “You’ve got to be joking, James. You just have to be!”
That was it, that priceless look on her face. He broke into a huge grin, laughing at that look of absolute terror. “Yes, I am joking. Although I think I have to put some extra blush on those cheeks. Girl, you are so pale.” Once he was laughing, he couldn’t seem to stop. He picked up a brush instead of the razor and started misting her hair with the spray bottle, brushing it out at the same time.
“Oh my god, I hate you so much,” She whined before reaching out and smacking him playfully with the rolled up script in her hand. That was so awful of him, but she did have to admit that he totally got her, so she did eventually start laughing, “And I know I’m pale, it’s part of my appeal. Better to be pale than to be orange, right?”
James hadn’t stopped laughing yet. “I do know that there could be some pay back coming, but your face was awesome.” He knew he needed to settle himself into this project, so he started getting out a flat iron and brushes instead. “Orange is the new everything, you know,” he said as he worked.
Finally he took out a sketch of her hair swept up into a cute, yet functional hairstyle that would maintain itself in the wind. “This is what I’m really doing, and adding a few spikes for good measure.” This time he didn’t try to keep a straight face. It wasn’t happening.
