Faye didn’t necessarily need to work behind the bar, being the manager, but she enjoyed it. She liked the people and the noise and the busy atmosphere. And, of course, she was good at it. She was naturally social and could mix cocktails with the best of them. She had let one of her girls leave early to attend a concert she was excited about so was putting away glasses and serving.
Turning she noticed a new guy leaning against the bar, making her way over she smiled her Faye smile and leaned over - low cut top present as always, it was practically her uniform, “What can I get you handsome?”
“Oh, wow,” Johnny said, his mouth opening and closing as he stared unabashedly at the cleavage on display. He pushed his glasses up his nose and forced himself to meet the face of the pretty bartender, his expression sheepish. Sue and Mom would totally disapprove, but hey, the woman practically had them on display, and he wasn’t immune to feminine wiles. “I mean, hi. I’ll uh...I’ll just have a….well, what’s on tap?”
Faye grinned, he was so adorable. And she actively encouraged the looking, she wouldn’t wear what she did if she didn’t want to be stared at. She laughed prettily, “You’re new here aren’t you sweetie?” she said, “Let me get you something a little special, on the house”
“Is it that obvious?” Johnny wondered aloud. “I mean--sorry. That would be great, thanks.” He stood a little taller in front of the bar, trying to project confidence and maturity. He was twenty-five. He had two degrees and a job and was being paid extremely well. He was a grown up. He should not feel like he was back in high school every time an attractive woman flirted with him. And yet. “I don’t even know what I’m doing here,” he sighed.
She chuckled, “Only to the trained eye” she told him with a wink as she set about making his drink and if she happened to wiggle just a little more than usual well, he deserved it for being a good sport. “I’d imagine you’re looking for a good time” she said, “I can help you, take a look around tell me who catches your eye”
“Oh, geez,” Johnny muttered, watching her move. He swallowed heavily and resigned himself to going to the special hell. “I’m not...do people still do that? Hook up in nightclubs?” He shook his head and laughed, awkwardly. “I guess you would know, if you work here. How long have you been a bartender?”
Oh now this was the kind of sweet boy that Faye could break, had broken in the past in fact. But luckily for Johnny she was actually exclusively dating Merle right now so she’d have to help find him another girl to help him along. She laughed too, “Some do. It’s not so bad, it can be nice just to have a good time you know?” she told him, placing his cocktail in front of him with a flourish, “Long enough, pretty much since I’ve been legally allowed”
Well, that was a loaded statement. Johnny was smart enough to not guess how long that was and simply smiled. “Uh, absolutely,” he agreed, eyeing the flamboyant looking drink curiously. “What’s in this thing?” he asked, curious, before he took a sip. “Or is it some kind of secret recipe?”
Johnny was a clever boy, Faye never revealed her age and he was sensible enough not to ask. “Not at all, that is ‘Sex on the beach’ it’s midori, vodka, strawberry liqueur, pineapple juice and a dash of grenadine” she smiled at him, “You like it?”
“It’s uh...it’s better than actual sex on the beach, I can tell you that,” Johnny replied, flashing a shy, flirtatious smile. Awkward he might be, but not virginal. Sometimes it took him awhile to get comfortable enough to speak confidently. At least around attractive people. He took another sip and licked his lips at the sweet residue the syrupy drink left behind. He gestured vaguely at himself. “Sand in the most uncomfortable places,” he added, mock-grimacing.
Faye laughed, ah here we go. This is the lady killer she knew was in there, apparently it just took him a while to warm up. She was glad. “Oh tell me about it. Preaching to the choir here darlin’” she winked.
Johnny grinned at her wink and ducked his head. “So, are you seeing anyone? I mean….” he gestured, apologetically, awkwardly. “...other than me. At the moment. You know, literally seeing me since you’re not blind--not that there’s anything wrong with being blind,” he rambled.
“You’re adorable. I have got myself a guy” Faye confirmed, “other than you, you little sweetie. But I’m sure we can find somebody who could pique your interest in here” she told him with a smile.
“You think so?” Johnny lifted his head, almost puppy-ish in the way he peeked at her from beneath long lashes. “I mean--you don’t have to go to any trouble. I’m perfectly happy with my little pink umbrella drink here, watching other people hooking up. Having sex. With each other. And not with me.”
“It is not trouble, in fact it’ll be the highlight of my night” she told him honestly, “Now pick out a girl and we’ll get a game plan going” she topped up his drink as she spoke. She was determined to make sure Johnny had a great night that ended with him being one of those having sex.
