Damon had been thinking about the vervain issue a lot. He and Stefan were working on a plan, even though they didn’t have a thing yet. They were starting though, and it was better sooner than later. The last thing he needed was Elena waking up with Damon as a vampire and becoming his first meal. The thought made Damon shudder, bringing him by Stefan’s after school to see if he had located the vervain they would need to protect her.
He sat downstairs with Stefan, pouring over maps of the area, trying to pinpoint areas that may grow the plants. Baja California seemed to be the most likely location of the plants, actually grown like shrubs. They just had to extract the oil and then use it. With new information, he walked back upstairs, finding Rebekah in the kitchen.
Damon leaned against the door moulding. He hadn’t really talked to Rebekah much since the whole breakup, and then he had those dreams. He and Bekah had a short, but interesting history in the dreams, one that wouldn’t make his brother happy, but at least he knew about it now. “Hi,” he said. “Smells good. What are you making?”
“Hey,” Rebekah responded cheerfully as she turned to face him with a bowl in her arms. She was stirring when she spoke, but she took a break and set the bowl on the island in front of her, “Lemon cupcakes. Giving them a try as a potential dessert for Nat’s birthday party next month. Figured I might as well get an early start and if I make them myself it’ll save some money.” Yes, the breakup had put Rebekah in a difficult position, but she knew she would never be able to stay mad at Damon for long since he was her brother-in-law now. Elena had decided to give him another chance and she wasn’t going to stand in the way because Elena was a grown woman and could make her own decisions.
“How’s it going out there with the maps?” She had heard a little about what the boys were planning to do and she honestly thought it was a good idea for them. Finding something to help should they eventually turn was a good thing and would hopefully prevent some incidents.
Damon was glad that Bekah seemed to be coming around. He was a little angry himself, or had been, but he could just let it go. The fighting between he and Elena had been his fault, but they were better now. He had more on his mind than issues that had passed. “It’s going. I don’t know if we are looking for the right species, or if the one we need even grows in this area.” Damon usually was quick with a one liner, but this whole issue made him tired and frustrated, and it showed as he rubbed his temples.
“What do you think of all of this? It isn’t supposed to happen, but it is. People don’t just turn into vampires after a few crazy dreams.” Yet he stood there looking very much the part of a vampire, and he was worried. It wasn’t as bad if it was just him, but Stefan would follow and so would Bekah.
“No one has had any show up from their dreams? You could potentially get some sort of botanist to try and grow it for you if you had some, I bet,” Rebekah didn’t know much about plants or anything like that, but it seemed like you should be able to grow a plant from a seed. And she was willing to try and come up with an idea to help the two of them along. She didn’t want to turn and she didn’t want any of her friends to hurt anyone if they did turn, so vervain was pretty important now.
“I wish I knew why it was happening. It doesn’t make sense that we have this little niche of people turning into vampires. I hate that because we’re dreaming of it that it’s starting to happen,” Rebekah couldn’t help but frown as she placed cupcake liners in the pan and studied Damon for a moment, “Are you scared?”
“I’m sure we can grow it, but not in time.” Actually, growing it would be a good idea. They would have their own source, and wouldn’t have to buy it from anyone. “My dreams are going fast forward. I did see that one dream you had awhile back.” Given the seriousness of the discussion, he was lacking that teasing grin.
That really was the million dollar question. Was he scared? Damon folded his arms across his chest, leaning back against the moulding. “Dream me makes it look pretty easy. I guess when it comes to things like blood, and those abilities, I’m not. I can manage.” He had paid more attention than he ever said, not so much to the drama, but to how he handled himself. “I’m going to die though, and that is what sucks. I don’t think I can go back from that. My human life will be over and I’m scared.” It was the first time he had ever said that word. He liked to play it off, like it would be fine. He was never entirely sure that it would.
“Oh god, which one? We have some really messed up dreams that involve both of us,” She commented. Her cheeks blushed a little as she was reminded of the sexy dreams that involved them. It was so strange to dream of herself having sex with her husband’s brother. But thankfully that was all in the dreams and she didn’t have to worry about anything in this world because she was happily married, “And all the practice our dreams selves had makes sense that it seems so easy. It almost makes it seem so seductive from what we see of it. And I’m so sorry that you’re going to go through that. I can’t believe you will actually have to die, I thought it would just take over - that knowledge would scare me. But hey...Stefan and I are here for you no matter what, okay?”
“There was the one of us, and the one of you, me, and Sage, and then one of you hanging me by animal traps.” He laughed a little bit, flashing a handsome smile that had caused more than a few women to melt. He was committed to one, but the past was what it was. “Remind me never to piss you off again.”
Laughing for a moment felt good, but he turned serious again. “I don’t see any way around it. Mitchell doesn’t have a heartbeat. I guess we actually do as long as we fed, but we are still dead. I never thought I’d be in a place where I might never do all these normal things like you and Stefan. I want kids someday. I’m not sure I want to be old, but a family would be nice, and I have to consider that it might never happen, and I have no choice but to get through it, and make it look like I’m perfectly fine.” He did a great job of it, or he thought he did, but it was a big cover up. He lied every time he said he was fine. “Are you going to trust me when it happens? I know I will have to be careful around Nat.”
Rebekah couldn’t help but smirk a little bit at the mention of how she had tortured Damon in the dreams when she found out he backstabbed her. She was powerful and vengeful in the dreams, which were qualities she thankfully didn’t have here, “Well, this place is seriously fucked up, so maybe even if you do have to lose your life you can get it briefly back? It wouldn’t surprise me if it tends to do things like that. It might be a horrible way to live - hoping for the brief moments you’re human again - but it could help you keep sane when this is happening. And I know you’re good at looking like you’re fine, but remember you can be yourself around here. And we’ll trust you - it might take a bit of time until you get control and can be around Nat, but we would never cut you out of our lives.”
Damon shook his head and smiled. “Fucked up is about the only way to put it.” He thought she was being reasonable about it, but it wasn’t an actual reality yet. “I’m not going to put Nat in danger. I’ll stay away if I have to until I have control. I’m not going to be stupid. I need you to make sure Elena is okay.” He knew she was going to try to hang in there with him, and it would work very well, but he could also snap. He just didn’t know. “Don’t be afraid to tell her to let me go if she has to.” It would hurt, but it was better than hurting her physically.
“I know, I can do that. Elena knows that Stefan and I are here for her if you need to be gone. And I completely understand needing to be gone if this starts happening. And I don’t think that she’ll have to let you go permanently, Damon. You are smart and strong and you will be able to find control. If there are other people here who are vampires can handle their day-to-day lives then you can too,” She believed that they would be able to overcome this hurdle. It may take some time and be frustrating as hell, but they would be able to help Damon gain control over this.
“I know. I’ve got a good grip on it in the dreams. I may be kind of a dick, but I’m not the worst guy. Others have done it.” He just didn’t know what it would be, or how long it would take. “I do have a few friends out there who are doing okay. Vampire sex is supposed to be pretty epic.” At the end of the day, he could always cover all those messy feelings with a cheap joke. She was right though, he was strong and smart, and he would get through it. He didn’t have a choice.
“Oh my god, you’re such a perv,” She couldn’t help but laugh at him as she grabbed a towel off the counter and threw it at him. Maybe trying not to think about it was the right thing and adding a little humor to your situation never hurt anyone. She just wanted to make sure Damon knew that he had her and Stefan to help him out if need be. He was part of her family now and she would do what she could to help him.
