Finals would be coming up soon and while Jem had a week off soon for Spring Break, he could never fully relax when it came to things like school work and exams until he was absolutely sure that he was fully prepared. Sure, finals were still well over a month away, but that didn’t help to relax him like it might other people. So when he didn’t have to work after classes, Jem would spend some time in the library, going over his coursework and making notes to study later when he was home. All of this studying didn’t leave him with much of a social life, but he kept telling himself that once he passed his finals, he could take the time then to relax and get out and finally take a look around at his surroundings, which he still hadn’t explored much since he’d moved back in September.
Caroline's social life had been pretty much non existent since she got back. She had seen her best friend once, but that was it. She didn't blame her though she knew her friend had a lot going on. Besides it just gave her more time to focus on school, which she really needed to do since she had transferred back a few weeks after the semester started. The blonde was use to studying at home, but she was tired of being alone in her room. She decided to switch it up and try studying in the library. It was more crowded than she had expected. She made her way to one of the tables. "Mind if I sit here?" she asked motioning to a chair next to a guy who seemed pretty engrossed in his studies. Hopefully she hadn't disturbed him too much.
Jem looked up as the blond motioned towards the chair beside him and Jem shook his head, “Not at all.” As he spoke, it would be obvious that he was from England, “I can move some of my things if you need more space,” As he spoke, Jem was already picking up one book and moving it to his other side, not wanting to have his things spilling into the blond’s space. It was one thing when you were the only one at a table, but when another person joined you it was only right to give them just as much space as you had.
"Great thanks" Caroline said with a smile setting her bag down on the table and taking the seat. "Oh no you don't have to do that" she felt a little bad like she was taking over his space or something. "You aren't from here are you?" that was probably a stupid question with his accent and all. The blonde began taking her books out of her bag to study. That was the reason she was at the library after all. Not to disrupt other people's study time.
Jem shook his head, “I’m originally from England. I moved here in October.” He stated as the blond sat down then he extended a hand to her, “James Carstairs, but everyone usually calls me Jem.” It was a nickname that his mother had given him when he was little and it had stuck and now he preferred it to his given name, which he rarely used except on official documents for school or the doctor or things like that.
“Caroline” she replied shaking his hand. “It’s nice to meet you” she added, getting the last of her books out of the bag. “Why’d you want to come here” she raised a brow curiously. “I have always wanted to go to London. Or anywhere really. I have never been out of California. I was in San Francisco for a bit, but I got back a few weeks ago” the blonde could be pretty talkative sometimes, well most of the time. Right now was no different.
“I wanted a change of scenery and I have a cousin who lives out here,” Jem hadn’t seen Jubilee in awhile, being as busy as he had been with school and work, but he had talked to her a few times recently. He would have to make plans with her soon, “If you could go anywhere, where would you go?” He asked, curious as to what her answer would be and why.
That was a tough question. The girl wanted to go tons of places. She wasn’t sure she could pick just one. “Probably anywhere in Europe. Especially France” that was the most she could narrow it down. In truth she wanted to see a lot more of the US as well as other countries, but Europe was at the top of her list.
“France is really nice. If you ever get the chance, you should definitely go.” Jem had been to France once and China a few times to visit his mother’s family, “I think this is the farthest I’ve traveled. I haven’t seen much of the area yet though.” Jem had been busy with school and work, but hoped to do all the tourist stuff in the summer, once he was finished with the semester.
“I definitely want to go. Hopefully I get the chance” there was a wistful tone to her voice. “Well that’s farther than I have traveled. But really? You have been here for a few months now and haven’t done any sight seeing? I haven’t really since I got back, but it has only been a few weeks for me. Plus I have seen it all already anyways. I need to go back to Disneyland though. My best friend works there now” it was weird. Things had changed a lot for her best friend in the time Caroline had been gone. Now she was busy and hardly had time to see Caroline anymore. She wasn’t complaining though, she understood. She just missed her.
“I haven’t been to Disneyland. I’d like to go at some point, but haven’t had a chance yet.” He also wasn’t going to go alone, so there was that, “During spring break and the summer break, I plan to do some sightseeing. I’m sure my cousin wouldn’t mind showing me around then.” It would give him and Jubilee time to hang out, after all.
“You didn’t do any sightseeing over the winter break?” She was a bit curious about that. It was understandable when school was going on. It did tend to take over. But he had said he had been there since October. There had to have been some breaks in there to see things. “You definitely have to go though. It’s worth it.” Her eyes fell on her books once again. “Speaking of spring break I am so ready for it. I definitely need a break.”
Jem shook his head, “I worked mostly. I work in a small antiques shop in Irvine.” He moved a book to locate the notebook underneath then moved it where he would be able to read his notes easily, “It’ll be a nice break.” So long as nothing crazy happened during the time of course. Over the last couple of months things that he had never expected had been happening and while not all of them were bad, they were all certainly interesting.
"Well that's no fun. If your job I guess it's kind of okay. But still I would not want to spend my whole break working. Are you going to have to do that over the spring break? Or will you actually get to go sight seeing?" Caroline herself couldn't wait for the break. She was exhausted with school and just needed some time to relax. She was pretty sure pretty much everyone was beyond excited for the break. After all who didn't look forward to time off from school.
“I don’t think I’ll be working the whole time, no.” Jem enjoyed his job at the antique’s store, but he was looking forward to having a complete day or two off to do something for himself. “So, I’m sure I’ll do something during my days off. Do you have plans for break?”
“You definitely should’ the blonde said with a smile before shaking her head. “Not really no. Mostly just relaxing. I think I might actually sleep for a whole day” she joked with a laugh. “I promised my friend I would go to the beach with her, but she is going on a road trip with her boyfriend or something, so I don’t even know when we are going to do that. If you need someone to show you around or go sight seeing with let me know.”
“Sometimes I envy people who can sleep late. I tend to get up early whether I have to work or have class or don’t.” Jem moved turned a page in his notebook then smiled at Caroline, “Thank you. I’ll keep that in mind. I hope you get to hang out with your friend too though.”
“If I didn’t have an alarm I’d probably sleep all day. I don’t know how people get up early on their own” she said with a laugh opening up one of her books. “Me too. I’m sure I will though,” she smiled at him reassuringly before looking back down at her book.
“I appear to have an internal alarm or something.” After he’d moved, his internal clock had been extremely screwed up for the first few weeks, but he had managed to get back on a regular schedule. “Well, I should let you get on with your studying. I actually have a class in a few minutes.” He started gathering his books and things and put them in his bag then smiled at Caroline, “It was really nice to meet you, Caroline. I hope we see each other again soon.”
“Nice meeting you too” the blonde said smiling over at him. “I’ll see you around” she added waving goodbye before turning her attention back to the book in front of her, getting started on her studying.
