Why would I move out?
Who: Zuko and Amy Pond
When: Early March
Where: Zuko’s place where Amy Lives
What: Checking in
Rating/Warning: Low/None
Status: Complete
Amy was hanging out in the living room, flipping through channels on her terribly large television. After the craziness of last week, she’d done some cleaning, but thankfully the windows and doors had a strong enough seal that very little ash actually got into the place. There was a bunch outside, but the HOA sent notes out to everyone saying that they were going to hire people to come in and clean everything. It was pretty good, all things considering.
She had a glass of wine and some hummus and veggies for a snack while she tried to find something decent to watch. Hopefully John would finish up his shift and text her, so they could go out or stay in or whatever. Anything to fight off the boredom. She needed another job.
It seemed only fair to come over to check things out after Amy had texted him during the -- whatever that had been. Volcanoes didn’t really bother a guy who was from a place called the Fire Nation, but he could see why it might bother some people. Considering all that… volcano.
The ash wasn’t pretty and the condo looked a little … stained. But otherwise it wasn’t terrible. Still, while he was here he may as well check in on Amy. So he knocked on his door. Her door. The door.
The worst thing that had happened to Amy during the… Volcano? Thing… was that she’d gone a little stir crazy being stuck inside the condo. But really, she wasn’t in a bad place. A little bored, but not damaged. And she’d missed John while he’d been stuck at the hospital. The knock, though, made her brighten a little. She turned to answer it, pulling the door open without checking the peep hole.
“Hey, Zuko.” She said, smiling. “Come on in.”
Zuko gave a tight lipped sort of smile in return and let himself in when offered, making sure to take his sneakers off before stepping further into the place. No need to trail more ash around, right? Right.
“Hey,” he said, sticking his hands into his pockets. “Doing okay?”
“Yeah, I think so. As okay as one can be after a Volcanic Eruption?” Amy said, then shrugged her shoulders. “How are you? Did you and Draco make it through without… breathing in any of that ash?” Did it really cause consumption?
“Draco stayed in,” Zuko assured, looking around curiously. He hadn’t been over in a while. It was interesting to see what Amy did with the place. Or, uh, didn’t do. “He’s lucky enough to be able to travel without needing to actually go outside.” Wizard perks, really.
Didn’t do was more like it. It was furnished, and she hadn’t really touched anything. Well, she’d touched things, obviously, to use them. But everything was in good, working order, and just as clean as when he’d left the place.
“Only Draco?” She asked. “Oh, wait… you do fire stuff, right? So… you were safe, yeah?”
Zuko laughed at that, but nodded. “Yeah. I do fire stuff. I’m fine. In my dreams we all work around fire and lava and stuff with no problem. A volcano isn’t much of a threat for me.” A pause as he pawed through a stack of CDs on the entertainment center, “well, not me personally. Obviously, I can’t help damages it’d make or whatever.”
“Well, yeah. I mean… ash is bad. I hear it did some damage to cars and the like.” She shrugged her shoulders once, and watched him at the entertainment center. Hopefully her CDs passed inspection. (He was welcome to borrow any he liked, too.) “But thankfully it wouldn’t hurt you.”
“I don’t have a car,” Zuko said, a little thoughtfully. Maybe he should. He could afford one. And he had a license now. Why didn’t he have a car? Huh. “But we do have a garage. For Draco’s.”
But whatever. “Is the new Depeche Mode good?”
“Depeche Mode is always good.” Amy said, moving over to the entertainment center to stand beside him. “Weird that I still have all these cds. So much of my music is digital now. But yeah, it’s good. You want to borrow it?”
“CDs are good for… car trips and stuff.” Sure, iPod docks existed but sometimes it just wasn’t good enough. “But...yeah, I’d like to borrow it.” He knew Amy wouldn’t mind. They traded CDs all the time, and sometime he even emailed her random links to things she ought to be listening to. It was nice to have a music friend.
“And for sharing.” Amy said, pulling the cd off of the rack and handing it over to him. “I couldn’t let you borrow it if I only had it on my ipod.” She was glad to share. She was glad to have that friend who emailed her randomly at 3am with a link to a new youtube sensation. It was nice.
“Cool,” Zuko said, fiddling with the CD enough to look at track titles and cover art. That was another nice thing too -- tangibility. Or something.
“So. Uh. Everything else going okay?”
“Yeah, I think so. My divorce was finalized so… that happened.” Amy said, giving one of her lips pressed together sorta smiles--you know, the kind that showed off her dimples?--and shrugged her shoulders. “Feels good to be single. Oh, do you mean with the condo? Yes, the condo’s fine.”
“Oh. I meant in general.” His coffee buddy had gone to live on a spaceship. He certainly wouldn’t mind making a new one, he supposed. Not that Hermione was replaceable. But. Yeah.
“Cool to hear about your divorce though. That’s good. I’m glad you don’t have to deal with it anymore. Did you get rid of that other guy, too?” Hey, she said she was single.
“What? Oh. No. Not at all. John’s still around. Well, not right now, but… he’s still my boyfriend.” She had said she was single, hadn’t she? That was probably a mistake-y thing to say. “It’s just that being free of that terrible, mistake of a marriage has lifted so much weight off of my shoulders, I feel so free, you know? Like I can really do anything now.”
“Yeah,” Zuko said, nodding in a way that was mostly just solemn. “I can get that.” Not that he needed a divorce, but since he’d distanced himself from his family he’d been a lot better off in life. He was pretty sure that was a way to relate in this format.
“Well, cool. Good for you. Seriously.” he grinned then, sly and sideways. “You’ll tell me if you’re moving out in advance, right?”
Amy blinked at him. “Why would I move out?” She asked. Honestly, she couldn’t find a place for less than she was paying Zuko. It was a beautiful home with elegant furniture. She had wings now, sure, and was free… but she wasn’t about to give up this condo. Not on your life, mister. “Well, I might go travel a bit, I suppose.” Not that she couldn’t travel before her divorce was finalized…
"I mean like, if you were going to move in with your boy pal," Zuko mollified, holding his hands up. It wasn't as pointed a gesture when he was holding up a CD case at the same time, really.
"I wasn't trying to say you ought to be, but. You know. Yeah." Okay lame. Sorry.
Amy blinked at him for a moment, then her mouth dropped open. “Oh. Oh, Gosh.” She said as she realized what he was talking about. Moving in with John. Now that she was officially single… was he going to ask her to move in with him? Or marry him?? ...would that be a terrible thing? Actually, it seemed like it might be a pretty awesome thing. Amy wasn’t sure she was ready for that big step. She wasn’t sure she wasn’t ready, either.
“Crap.” She said, her eyes out of focus, staring blankly at the cd tower.
“Oh,” Zuko said, sounding a bit apologetic. “I didn’t mean to -- you know. Imply…” Man, he’d made this awkward. He was pretty sure he’d broken Amy Pond, over here. Whoops.
“No.” Amy took far, far too long of a pause there. Her brain may very well have been broken by those thoughts. She cleared her throat, forced her eyes to focus, and then gave him a smile. It was likewise forced. “No no, it’s okay. I really should have put two and two together on that one.” John was likely thinking along the same lines. She was free now to move in with him if she wanted to.
Still. Zuko shifted uncomfortably and shrugged. “Yeah, well. It happens. I didn’t move in with Draco until we got married so… you know. I don’t think there’s a specific time people have to…” he paused scowled and then shrugged. “Anyway. I’m taking this CD. I’m gonna go do other things now.”
“Yeah. Yeah, okay, thanks, Zuko.” She forced a smile, then walked him to the door. She was still distracted as she opened it to let him out. “Let me know how you like the CD.”
Zuko, done with making an idiot of himself, only waved vaguely with the CD in hand on the way out.
