Elizabeth moved slowly through the assorted chairs and tables in the cafe she had arranged to meet Sam at. She hadn’t been feeling great for the last couple of days which was unusual for her. She’d been late for her last period, so assumed that because she’d missed one, it was double it’s normal discomfort when it turned up. She’d never been regular what with a stressful work life and generally not sleeping or eating properly so it didn’t concern her, but she’d not experienced this level of cramping for a long while. They’d started getting worse today though, but Elizabeth being the stubborn woman she was had tried to force it to the back of her mind and carry on with teaching and meeting Sam for lunch. She was regretting her decision somewhat now though, wishing she could have been curled up on the couch at home with a hot water bottle and a good book, maybe even with Leonard reading to her and stroking her hair as he did. Nevertheless, he was busy, she was determined and Sam was waiting.
“Hey Sam, sorry I’m late,” she apologised as she approached the table and pulled the chair back. “I’ve not been feeling all that great today,” she admitted reluctantly as she sat down. Admitting she was ill was not something she liked to do, but with Sam and it being as bad as it was today she couldn't pretend to be all right.
Sam looked up as Elizabeth arrived and her smile of greeting turned into one of concern, “Oh Lizzie you shouldn’t have come if you feel ill” she reached out to lay her hand against her friends forehead, “I have to say you don’t look very well. Have you been eating and sleeping okay?” she asked, biting her lip in worry.
"Thanks Sam, I love you too," Elizabeth retorted with a little smile. "I've not really been doing much of either to be perfectly honest, what with all this Russia and Ukraine business, the UN wanting to consult with no thought to timezones and my work schedule I've not really found the time," she told her friend. "I'm sure I'll be fine it's just...a bad time of the month," she confided quietly, feeling a wave of cramps move through her. "How are you anyway?"
“You know I only say that because I love you” Sam replied, the concern not leaving her face and she kind of ignored the question sent her way. “Do I need to perform an intervention here? Because I am not afraid to tell those UN guys where to go” Sam said fiercely and it was obvious she meant every word, “They can’t do this to you. It’s not fair and you won’t be in a position to help if they make you ill”
“I…” Elizabeth sighed and closed her eyes, rubbing a hand over her aching abdomen. She shook her head slightly as a more intense wave of pain washed over her. “Actually Sam, would you mind if we skipped lunch out and just went home?” she asked.
“Of course not, come on” Sam said, grabbing her bag and standing before squeezing her friends arm, “Let’s go take care of you. Tea and toast isn’t that what they say when you’re feeling ill”
“Thanks Sam,” Elizabeth smiled gratefully and moved to stand up gingerly. She grabbed hold of the edge of the table to steady herself as she did and took a deep breath. “I’m just going to go to the ladies first, ok?”
Sam nodded, “Want me to come with? You don’t look all that steady Lizzie” the concern was obvious and her eyes had widened when her friend had gripped the table.
Elizabeth nodded tiredly, pressing her lips together tightly as they moved to the restroom together. She shut herself in the cubicle and set about her business, her stomach cramping painfully as she did. The bleeding was heavier than before, with large clots that she knew somehow were not normal. Worry gripped her and she quickly cleaned herself up, flushed and headed back out to the sinks. She washed her hands pulling some towels out of the dispenser and turning to Sam. “I think something’s wrong Sam,” she said in a grave voice. “I...could you take me to the emergency room?” she asked quietly, keeping her eyes cast down and holding a hand to her stomach again as it cramped again.
“Of course” Sam said immediately, taking her friends arm to help her from the bathroom out to the car, “What’s wrong Lizzie? Is it your appendix?” It was one of the only things she could think of since Lizzie seemed to be holding her stomach.
“I don’t know, I...I don’t think so,” Elizabeth replied quietly as Sam helped her into the car. “Please Sam just...drive fast,” she told her, trying not to panic or let the worry show in her voice. She leaned her head back on the seat and closed her eyes and hoped the pain would stop soon.
“It’s okay Lizzie, you’re gonna be fine. We’ll be there soon” Sam promised driving as fast as she could, trying to avoid swerving or pot holes so as not to jolt her friend.
Elizabeth nodded grimly in the seat next to her. She had never been more grateful to have a friend like Sam in her life before, someone to rely on when things got scary and she needed support. Elizabeth licked her lips and pressed them together into a thin line as more cramps took her over.
Sam was becoming increasingly more concerned, she had no idea what could be wrong but Lizzie looked pale and drawn and she was glad when the hospital came into view. She parked, and thanked whatever was out there that there was a space, and came around to help Lizzie out of the car.
Nina was just about to clock off her shift when she saw two women enter emergency, she recognised them immediately having gotten to know Elizabeth when she had been in here before. Moving over to them she took Elizabeth’s other arm, “What’s happened? Where are you in pain?” she asked.
“Cramping, I thought it was normal at first, but,” Elizabeth trailed off as she put her hand to her stomach and shook her head. “And I’m bleeding...more than I’ve ever had before,” she closed her eyes and gritted her teeth as her muscles cramped again.
Nina called over an orderly with a wheelchair and gently settled Elizabeth into it, “We’re going to get you checked out okay? You’ll be fine Elizabeth, we’re going to take care of you”
Sam, who had been watching and listening with worry, said, “I’ll call Leonard, you’re going to be fine Lizzie” She watched as Elizabeth was wheeled away worry gnawing at her as she dialled Leonard’s number with slightly shaky hands.
