Elphaba was looking forward to a relaxed evening in with her fianceé tonight. They had had a lovely dinner and now they had moved into the living room to relax with the rest of their bottle of wine. “So what was it you wanted to tell me?” she asked as she set her glass of wine on the table and sat down facing Lúthien.
“It was what happened late last month,” Luthien said, sipping at her wine. “The orcs, and the ash. It was all related to something in my dreams. That corruption that tempted me.”
“The thing that’s not someone else, right,” Elphaba joked, tipping a smile Lúthien’s way.
“Yes.” Luthien laughed, giving her lover a fond look. “I met another elf and even she couldn’t tempt me from you.”
“Really?” Elphaba asked quietly looking down at her hands, a slow grin forming on her lips and a blush colouring her cheeks at the thought that Lúthien would turn someone down for her. “You did that for me?” she asked, looking at Lúthien from under her lashes.
“I’m yours and you are mine,” Luthien replied simply, and gently. “While there is always room in my heart for friends, that special place is reserved for you.”
Elphaba grinned at her words. “I love you, you have such an amazing way with words,” she told her fianceé, reaching out to take hold of her hand. “So, what was it that did tempt you?”
“A ring. Seemingly innocent, but filled with great power.” She stroked her own ring finger. “I could have used it to help people. To end war, even hunger, and oh the things it whispered to me.”
Elphaba swallowed as Lúthien spoke. "What sort of things?"
“‘Luthien’ it told me. ‘Your son could be yours without the fight. I have power, and paired with your voice the world would tremble at your might.’” She shook her head, “But I have no desire to conquer, so instead it offered me the power to bring peace and beauty to the world. And that was tempting.”
“Why didn’t you take it? I mean, what’s the downside?” Elphaba asked.
“It has one goal. To return to it’s master. It will offer anything and everything it can, and it can even deliver on that promise, but eventually you fall under it’s spell.” Luthien’s face became very serious. “There are precious few objects of power in my world that do not have a price. That ring will twist you. My necklace will bring ruin if certain people knew about it.”
“Your necklace?” Elphaba asked, eyes flicking do to the piece of jewellery around Lúthien’s neck. “What does it...do? How could it bring ruin? I mean, is it...safe? To be around?”
Luthien took it off. She typically had the gem itself hidden beneath her shirt, but part of it was still visible around her neck. It was of dwarven make, and glittered. Inset was a brilliant white gem that seemed to glow of it’s own light. “This is one of the gems made from the light of the two trees. Before there was the sun and moon, there were the trees that gave us light. An elf named Feanor crafted three of these, but they were stolen. Many terrible things happened because of that. So unless Feanor and his sons dream, we’ve no worries.”
“So no...for now at least,” Elphaba replied, reaching out to touch the necklace as it glittered.
Luthien let her touch it, and even put it into her hands. “This was passed down to my son, but it brought death to my people eventually.”
“Should I be touching it? Will it still...bring death?” Elphaba asked, feeling a little alarm at the idea of touching such a powerful item. “If the men you talked about before start dreaming, will I...y’know,” she left the sentence hanging.
Luthien scooted over until she was in Elphaba’s lap, and smiled at her. “I will not let harm to you. They do not dream in this world so they don’t know it exists. And even if they did they’d have to get through me to get to you. Just touching it isn’t going to invite anything but appreciating it’s beauty.”
Elphaba smiled contentedly at Lúthien as she shifted over, placing her hand on Lúthien’s leg as they sat across hers and running her thumb back and forth. With her other, she handed back the necklace, lying her arm along the back of the sofa and playing with her fianceé’s hair. “I’ve got something to tell you too,” she told her quietly, with a nervous smile.
“Do you?” Luthien nuzzled her nose against Elphaba’s jaw and closed her eyes. “I’m all ears, beloved.” She wasn’t afraid of anything Elphaba had to say, and was curious and eager to know what her love was up to.
Elphaba grinned at her, still feeling excited and nervous about telling Lúthien her news. “Sooo...I went to an audition a few weeks ago. For a musical,” she said quietly, finding it hard to keep the smile from her face. “And...I got the lead role in it,” she told her with a bright smile lighting her face, keeping her voice quiet as she did.
“That’s fantastic!” Luthien leaned in and kissed her girlfriend. “I’m so happy for you! When do you start? How often is rehearsal? Will you still be able to come with me when I get Dior?”
She was thinking they ought to just go get him tonight. And elope. Though she’d like a full sized wedding.
Elphaba giggled into Lúthien’s kiss, cupping her cheek as she did. “Thank you. I’m not sure about the details yet, I’ll let you know, but I guess I could discuss it with the director and see if it would be possible to arrange for a week of rehearsals with other sections of the cast. If we set a date for going that is,” she told her, stroking her cheek.
"As soon as possible," Luthien said. Though she worried that he'd dream here, she still wanted her son under her care. The dreams had done a great deal to boost her confidence. "I may be impatient." She nuzzled Elphaba's palm with her cheek.
“Oh really? I never would have guessed,” Elphaba joked with a bright grin to her fianceé. “Have you heard from them lately?”
“Yes. Mother is twisting my father’s arm, so I think we may have better luck than I’d thought.” Luthien wondered if her mother had just been waiting for her to take responsibility. It was possible. She was certainly ready for that now.
“It sounds like she misses you a lot,” Elphaba said, a little sadly as she gazed at her lover, stroking her hair gently.
“Yes, I suppose she does.” Luthien ducked her head, then leaned in and rested her face against the woman’s neck.
Elphaba sighed contentedly and rested her cheek against Lúthien’s soft hair. “I asked Glinda if she would help us sorting the wedding out and she said yes,” she said absently.
“I love you.” Luthien said, stroking Elphaba’s cheek. “We are going to have a family. And I am so happy that you will be a part of it.”
"Me too love, me too," Elphaba sighed happily, content to site and stroke her lover's hair.
