Irisa tightened her grip on the strap of her gym bag as she entered the gym. She’d spoken to Alucard on the Net about self-defense before but she wasn’t entirely sure what to expect of the man who had offered her help. Of course, not knowing hadn’t deterred Irisa from coming, in fact it had probably made her even more stubborn about the decision.
After speaking to the young girl on the net Alucard had done a little research on her and spoken to a few people. He was intrigued to meet her and see what skills she had. A good fist if the number of broken noses in fights were anything to go by.
He was waiting for her when she entered the gym and moved his tall form into a standing position to greet her, “You made it I see, not that I doubted you would” he smiled at her, and it was very much the smile of a hunter upon spotting it’s prey.
Irisa stopped in the doorway as she spotted Alucard rising from his seat. She felt very much like a deer in the lion's den. Setting her jaw and pulling herself up to her full height, she moved into the room, his intimidating presence only making her more determined. One of her flaws some might say.
"So, you're Alucard?" she asked, hitching her bag up on her shoulder.
“That is correct and you are Irisa, the girl who wants to fight” he said, “I’ve heard a lot about you girl, in fact an old friend of mine, Miss Gordon, says you are a brilliant student. I think I’ll make up my own mind about that” he added eyes flashing with amusement.
He gestured to the punchbag in the middle of the room, “So let’s see what you can do”
Irisa gave a curt nod and set her bag down to the side of the room before moving over to the punchbag, casting a sideways glance at Alucard as she did. “You want me to just...punch it then?” she asked, referring to the bag.
“Unless you’d prefer to serenade it” Alucard replied dryly, “But ideally try to kick the crap out of it” he added with that predator smile.
Irisa raised her chin at that, not appreciating the rib. She turned to the bag and started to throw her punches ferociously, quickly working herself up into a sweat.
Alucard watched her, walking around to observe her form. Sloppy but not without some skill, he told her so. “You can be taught, if you listen. I’m not like your teachers, I won’t tolerate misbehaviour. You listen and I teach, you don’t listen and I don’t teach. It’s really as simple as that”
She watched him quietly as he spoke, never dropping her eyes from him. “So teach,” she told him straight.
He smiled, “Barbara was right about you, you are a determined, feisty thing aren’t you?” he nodded, “Okay, firstly don’t move so much. Take your time, your hits are strong but you lack finesse” he advised her moving closer, “There is an elegance to fighting which most people miss nowadays”
"I don't like being talked down to and I don't like getting things wrong," she told him. "It makes for a very determined mindset. I want to learn."
She reminded Alucard of Seras, though she was less timid than the police girl had been. “You will get things wrong” he told her, “But with my help, not for long. Now take your stance” as she did so he placed his hands on her shoulders correcting her slightly before taking her through a series of movements, allowing her to do it on her own with him interjecting and placing her when he felt he needed to.
Irisa nodded at him by way of saying thanks as he started to adjust her stance. She let him mould her, learning the way her body felt in these positions so that next time she had a basis for what it should feel like. Starting off on the sequence again, she looked over at him to see if she had gotten it wrong and was going to intervene.
When she looked over he simply smiled at her with a slight nod of approval. She listened and applied her learnings well. If she kept it up she would be a good student. “Well done Irisa, I think we’ll work well together. You’ll learn more from me than you could anywhere else. That’s not to say you shouldn’t train with others, but you will no doubt best them soon enough”
“Thanks. I think this could work,” Irisa gave a hint of a smile and ducked her head. “I met someone else the other day called Izzy, who’s pretty handy with a whip,” she told him. “Figure that’s a pretty useful skill to have,” she shrugged.
“A whip? Haven’t seen one of those used in a long time. Some middle eastern bodyguards used to be proficient in them you know. They can be lethal if wielded correctly” He was impressed by this unknown girl already. “It’s definitely more than a useful skill if you can master it”
“Yeah, she’s pretty cool,” Irisa told him. “And maybe I can be as good as her with it. Or do you think I should find something of my own?” she asked.
Alucard shrugged, "If you can wield it well then great but I imagine you'll know pretty quickly whether or not you will be any good with it. It's always best to find something which feels natural"
“Hmm,” Irisa paused to consider it, imagining the weight of the whip in her hand. “I guess...it doesn’t feel fast enough for me, do you know what I mean? Because I’m small I’ve always been able to...out-manoeuvre my opponents by being quick. The whip feels a little...cumbersome for my style,” she shrugged.
"I know what you mean" he nodded, considering her, "Knives or daggers may suit you better. I'm assuming you've had no proper firearms training?"
“Guns?! No, are you going to teach me?” Irisa perked up at the thought of that, eyes lighting up at the prospect.
“Maybe. Once I’m sure you aren’t going to get overexcited and go on a rampage” Alucard teased her.
“Ooooh, but rampages are awesome!” Irisa said in a mock whinging tone.
That made Alucard break and he chuckled, “Oh I have a feeling you are going to be trouble” he told her, though he didn’t look too upset by the prospect.
“I’m sure I have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about,” Irisa told him primly, holding her head high as she turned away from him.
“Of course not” Alucard said rather looking forward to having a student, “So same time tomorrow?”
