Sam Winchester had called and made an appointment to meet with Steve. He’d heard great things about the man’s training skills, and was looking forward to getting back into shape. Months with Deryn had made him a bit sloppy and pudgy--even though they’d been the happiest months of his life. Baked goods whenever he wanted it and sex without having to work for it? Of course he was growing lazy and fat.
He showed up at the gym ready for a workout, even though this was their first time meeting, and he wasn’t sure how much actual exercise he was going to be doing. Still, it was best to be prepared. “I’m here to see Steve Rogers?” He said to the girl at the front desk.
Steve was working on getting things set up for the meeting. He was always glad to meet new possible clients, even though his client list had certainly blown up in the last few months. Honestly, he was pretty flattered by it. Fortunately, Sam had gotten a hold of him just as another client was about to head abroad, so Steve had some room to make things work.
When he heard his name paged, he walked out to the front of the gym and grinned, holding out his hand. “Hey, you must be Sam? I’m Steve, it’s good to meet you.”
Sam turned at the sound of the voice, and gave a little grin, reaching forward for a handshake. Sam’s shake was solid, but not crushing. “That’s me. Good to meet you, too. I hear you’re the one to talk to about getting in shape?”
“I guess so,” Steve said, laughing. “Come along this way. We’ll do all the boring initial test stuff and then, since you came prepared, I’d like to run you through some fitness tests so I can get a good idea of where to start you at.” He motioned at Sam to follow him, and walked towards some of the offices near the back of the gym.
Sam gave a little nod. He was a fairly fit guy, though the pastries… he’d gone a bit lazy. He followed after Steve through the gym. “Sure, sounds good. I’m a bit eager to get started,” he admitted.
“That’s what I like to hear.” Steve grinned. He liked getting guys like Sam. Steve liked all his clients, but he really liked ones he could push to similar limits as himself. “The first little bit is going to be just a few tests. See your current body fat percentage, test your hydration level, talk about what you want of it. It’s good to be able to look back at where you started, you know? So you can really see your progress.”
"Sounds good. Seems like accurately tracking progress is good for both of us." It'd be good for Steve's numbers and keep Sam motivated. Win-win.
“Pretty much.” Steve opened the door to the office to let Sam inside, then started setting up the little machine that tested everything. “So, if you just take off your shoes, sock, and shirt and lie down on your back on that table, we’ll be good to go.”
Sam was a very trusting fellow. Even after all the Dreams, he wasn’t as jaded and paranoid as the man in them was. He was still trusting and accepting in this world, so when Steve told him to shed most of his clothes and lay down on a table, he did just that. “It’s not gonna hurt, is it?” He asked, only partly joking.
“Nah, I’m just going to electrocute you.” Steve glanced over, with a smile showing that he was joking. “Sort of.” He attached some wires to little sticky tabs, which he stuck on Sam’s foot, Sam’s chest, and Sam’s arm. “It’s going to shoot a current through your body, but you won’t feel anything. Then it measures everything for me and prints it off on a handy little sheet.”
Sam looked playfully horrified for a moment, then laughed. “All right, I’m trusting you, man.” He said, and laid back against the table, waiting for the machine to send jolts of electricity through him. It reminded him of high school where the van de graaff generator would make his physics teacher’s hair stand on end.
“Don’t worry. I don’t tend to run on the villainous side of things.” Steve looked amused. He switched on the machine and waited a minute, then went to the printer where the sheet was printing. “See, super easy. You’re more than welcome to peel those tabs off. Or you can keep them, I mean, I don’t care.”
“Can I really?” Sam asked, playfully, before sitting up and pulling the little sticky tabs off his chest, arm and foot. “...so, tell me, Doc. What’s the prognosis?” He added, finding a playful side of himself that normally was reserved for his amazing girlfriend.
Steve just laughed. “Well, the good news is, internally you’re in good shape. Toning you up isn’t going to take a whole lot of work, especially if you eat right. Your body’s also showing a good level of hydration, but with the spring coming it’s probably a good idea to up your water intake anyway as the heat comes back.” Steve put the paper in a folder and sat down, wheeling in his chair to look at Sam. “So. What exactly is it you want to get from this? Just toning up? Strength training? Planning on running any marathons or something?”
Sam put his clothes back on while Steve talked, then moved to sit down in front of his desk and put his shoes and socks back on. He nodded a little. “Mostly just toning up. Not planning on running marathons, no. Though, it’s not completely out of the question. I just work really long hours, and I’ve got a girlfriend who really likes to cook for me. Those combined make me feel a bit… flabby. I’d like to feel less flabby.”
“Totally understand,” Steve said. Well, not really, but he had a lot of clients come through in similar circumstances. “What would you say are you main areas of focus? Stomach and arms are usually the popular ones.”
“Yeah, uh… That’s exactly what I was going to say. Well, I was going to say core, and upper arms… but I figure they’re probably about the same.” Sam said, nodding. “And cardio. I think I need to get some conditioning back. I get winded going up stairs now a days.”
Steve wrote notes on a piece of paper that would also go in Sam’s file, then nodded. “I can absolutely work with that. Any pre-existing conditions I should know? Injuries, medical conditions, anything like that?”
“Nope. Some really weird dreams, but other than that I’m fairly fit.” Unless things came through the dreams… that would make for weird stuff. Drinking demon blood? Visions and near-death (and actual death) experiences? Sam figured he wouldn’t bring up any of that. It wasn’t important… right?
Well, Steve had to laugh at that. “Yeah, I get that. I mean, if anything, I’m fitter from my dreams.” He gave Sam a smile before writing down a few more things. “All right. Well, are you ready to get to it, a bit? I’ll run you through some basic fitness tests and then we’ll talk about scheduling and everything.”
Sam figured there was more story there behind that, but he simply grinned and nodded. They could talk more extensively about their dreams later. “I’m ready!” Sam agreed, cheerfully. He was actually rather excited to get a good workout in. “...just point me in the right direction, boss.”
