Ever since she had gotten to California, Terra had been looking for a new place to live. She had been mostly living in the day care, or a hotel some of the time. She’d come out here to really help people and had herself a job already. There were people out there that needed her, but she was stuck without a permanent home. It didn’t panic her, she knew she would find something eventually. In fact that was what she was doing right now. Seated at a cafe, she was going through a list of homes and apartments that were open for rent.
She saw the other girl, who was pretty hard to miss truth be told. She’d never seen skin like that before. It was fascinating, but pretty. “Hello! I’m Terra.”
Clarice was used to looks by this point. With her skin literally pink and her hair only a few shades darker, she seemed vastly out of place. Her face had the markings that had faded in, and her eyes were a softly glowing green. Picking out clothing that matched was always a pain. “Hi there. I’m Clarice.” She held out her hand.
She shook Clarice’s hand and smiled. “We talked on that um. internet thing. I just thought I’d say hi. Because.. well you said you were pink so.. sorry. Sorry..” Terra blushed a bit and looked away. She hoped that she hadn’t said something insensitive and stuck her foot in her mouth. “It’s nice to meet you.”
Terra was kind of clute, but Clarice wasn’t going to point that out. “Nice to meet you too. Am I bothering you?” She didn’t want to mess with someone if they were busy, and Terra looked like she was involved in a few things.
Terra shook her head a little. “Oh no. Not busy. Just looking for a place to live. There’s so many places, and not enough hours in the day to figure out which ones I can afford and that are okay with the things I do.” She shrugged a little.
“What can you afford?” Clarice took out a chair and sat down. “I might be able to help, I had the same problem when I came back from New York, and I was still fighting a divorce.”
“Um.. about seven or eight hundred a month? It’s much different here than back home. I’m from Baltimore. I don’t know which neighborhoods are better than others. I should have done this research before I came but I didn’t have much opportunity,” Terra explained, sitting down back in her chair.
“Just wanted to get moving?” Clarice did the math in her head. While there might be some danger due to the whole mutant superhero thing, she could use the help. “Well I’ve got an extra bedroom in my apartment and I only really need about five hundred plus your share of utilities. If you’re interested?”
“Yeah. The job opened up, and I took it and they said I needed to start right away. So here I am.” She had money to live for the most part until she found a place, but she still wanted to be able to bring the rest of her stuff from home. “Really? That’s all? Well.. you said you didn’t mind kids, right? I mean not that I’d be bringing them home right away. But I suppose sooner or later if I meet someone who needs help..” she trailed off. Terra looked hopefully up at her.
She’d have to clean out her researsal room but with the way Terra was looking at her it was hard to deny her. “That wouldn’t be a problem I think, as long as it’s not too many. You know? I can clean out the third bedroom easy enough.”
“Oh I wouldn’t ever bring home a bunch of strays..” She said with a laugh. “I just want to make sure. I wouldn’t ever do anything unless you told me it was okay.” Terra wasn’t just going to bring someone home without telling her or whatever.
Clarice nodded her head thoughtfully. “That’s good. I’d like a little warning. I’m involved in theatre and I’d have to make some adjustments. And I have some unusual friends.” She smiled fondly. Her mutant friends, and really she needed to stop thinking about Neena that way.
“Well perhaps I could come have a look and we could give it a try? If it doesn’t work, then I can find another place,” Terra said with a small smile. She didn’t really have any friends to worry about. Not yet anyway.
“Sure. Did you drive or take the bus?” Clarice didn’t want to leave Terra’s vehicle around if it was an option, and while she liked to teleport sometimes it was more fun to drive. She didn’t want to just be a taxi.
“I took the bus. I don’t have a car yet.” One more thing that she would have to save up for. Carefully Terra gathered up her papers and things. “Did you drive? We can take the bus, though you’ll have to tell me where to go.” And how to get back to the place she was crashing out now come to think of it.
“Actually, if you’re not easily spooked, I have an alternate way to travel,” Clarice said. “It’s pretty cool.” She just needed to get Terra outside before she ported them away.
“Alternate? What like a jet pack?” Terra asked with a blink. Right she was going to remember the odd stuff about this place one day. Once she had all of her stuff, she nodded. “I’m not spooked.”
Clarice nodded and led Terra outside. “You’ll see a flash and you might feel a little nauseous on the other side.”
A portal opened up beneath them and then swallowed them whole. In the blink of an eye they were standing in front of an apartment building. Clarice grinned at Terra. “The pink comes with benefits.”
She didn’t think that she was prepared for any of that. Terra wobbled and tried not to fall over. Her stomach did feel a little queasy once they landed. “Oh goodness..” She clutched her stomach and breathed until she felt better. “That.. that is beneficial but I think I would have to get used to that.”
Clarice rubbed the woman’s back. “It doesn’t usually take long. I don’t have a car so it’s handier than the bus.” She waited for Terra to recover then led her up the stairs. She thought a proper tour started with the front door. She unlocked it and then held the door for Terra, before closing it. There was a wire model with a shakspearan costume on it, and the shelves were filled with books and theatre related knick nacks. The tv was recent but not new, and there were posters from the theatre all over the walls.
Terra smiled gratefully and nodded her head. “I’ll remember that. That’s much hanider than using the bus or a car. Or an airplane for that matter.” Once she felt better, she followed Clarice up the stairs and inside her place. She looked around. It reminded her of her own place at home. Nothing out of the ordinary really. “It looks lovely so far.”
"Thanks. The kitchen is small but it works. Down here are the bedrooms. Mine is this one," she tapped a door as she passed it. "There's a ton of theater stuff in this one, and here is where you'd be staying." The room in question just had a bed and a dresser in it. It had been there when she'd moved in and she'd kept it because it was clean and she'd need a room mate eventually."
She could deal with the small kitchen. Though she could cook, it wasn’t like she made elaborate meals or anything. Just mostly for herself or if someone was with her. Terra couldn’t cook for a bunch of people. She glanced next in the room. It was a decent size. She could work with that. “I like it. I think I can get all of my stuff in here.” Not that she had a lot.
"Let me know and I can help you with that," Clarice said, grinning. It would save her some time and maybe the cost of movers. "Like, I'm not a taxi, but I can help out when needed."
“Thanks. I promise that I will get a car and not bug you for things unless it’s an emergency.” Terra was not a brat. For the most part. “So.. I mean I’m sure you want to make sure that I’m not a crazy person or evil or what have you so you can run a background check and everything. I have references too.”
"Saving on rent might help you save for a car." The pink woman nodded her head. "No offense but I'll do that. I've got a friend who's a whiz with that stuff and she owes me." Clarice winked. "It'll probably take like ... a day."
“That it definitely would,” Terra agreed. “No offense taken. It’s for the best for both of us. Okay then you let me know when you get all of that back and if you’re still agreeable, then I’ll move in. Thank you so much.” Then she blushed a bit. “Um.. any idea how to get back to St. Mary’s street?”
"I'll send you a message," Clarice said. Then she gestured with her hand. "Want the short cut or do you want to find your way on your own?" It would probably be good knowing how to come and go normally.
“I can find my way on my own. If you just point me towards the bus, I suppose is easiest.” She nodded and moved to the door so that she could go and not keep Clarice longer than she had to. “And thank you for everything.”
Clarice nodded her head and let Terra out. "Head that way, the stop is at the end of the street by the cross road." She pointed helpfully.
