Jeremy was sprawled out on his bed, phone in one hand, joint in the other. To say that Jeremy wasn’t having a good night was an understatement. Not only was there a random volcano and ash in the air, but Damon was downstairs with Elena and because of the report that everyone should stay inside because of the poor air quality, Elena didn’t want him to leave. The poor air quality hadn’t stopped Damon from coming over when the news reported it, so Jeremy didn’t see why he couldn’t go back home too. He’d been texting Myrcella ever since he’d come up to his room shortly after Elena had let Damon in and he planned on spending the rest of the night texting his girlfriend. Normally Jeremy didn’t get high while Elena was home, but right now he didn’t really care if she knew what he was doing.
Elena could understand why her brother was upset with her inviting Damon over, but at the same time… The reports on the news weren’t looking great and she was a worrier. It was recommended that everyone stay indoors from the bad air quality and who knew how long this was going to go on. Damon would have found his way over to the Gilbert house even if Elena hadn’t told him to come over. It was in his nature to be protective of his young lover.
With a sigh, Elena set her cup of coffee on the table before the couch, flopping down and lifting up the remote to flip it to the news. There still wasn’t much, just more talk about the volcano and the warnings and-- The brunette sighed and glanced towards the staircase up to the second floor. She had no idea what Jeremy was up to up there, but she was sure it at least involved texting his girlfriend. “This is fun,” she said with a bit of sarcasm, looking towards Damon.
Damon had arrived two hours earlier after texts from Elena, and reports on the news telling people to stay indoors. The first thing he did was venture out, stopping by the store to collect food before heading over to the house. He was there for the duration. The store had been a melee and he was pretty sure it wasn’t getting any easier. If anyone had to go out during whatever this was, it would be him.
After his arrival, he had settled in, and was currently working on spaghetti with homemade sauce. He had a loaf of garlic bread coming out of the oven, and the pasta was straining. Salad was already on the table, neatly set. “It’s the perfect little family,” he said, giving her a quick laugh. Honestly, he was over Jeremy’s attitude towards him. He and Elena were going to stay together, and it wouldn’t be changing. He was not going to tiptoe around anyone, or apologize for it.
“Dinner,” he called. Whether Jeremy came to eat or not was all up to him.
As far as Jeremy was concerned, if Damon was going to be around then Jeremy would choose to be somewhere else. It wasn’t a secret that Jeremy hated the man and he wasn’t about to subject himself to being in his presence when all he wanted to do was punch Damon, because chances were, he’d do it. And he wouldn’t apologize for it. Damon had hurt Elena and Jeremy couldn’t forget that. He was also a little upset at Elena, because she had told him that she’d broken up with Damon and wasn’t going back to him, but less than two weeks later they were back together and as far as Jeremy saw it, it was as if Elena was allowing Damon to hurt her and he wasn’t going to be around to watch it. All Damon was, was manipulative and he couldn’t understand how Elena didn’t see it. He said horrible things to Jeremy and Elena did nothing about it, but tell him to stop. Jeremy didn’t have very high hopes of them fixing anything now that Damon was back in the picture and he’d actually been optimistic after they’d gone to see Ezio, but now that optimism was gone and he was wondering if may he should just take that one woman’s advice and just go off on his own.
Elena took a sip of her coffee then managed to pull herself up from the couch, brown eyes wandering between her boyfriend and the stairs. She waited for a moment, but it was rather clear that Jeremy wasn’t going to come down to eat dinner. She wouldn’t have cared if he’d just wanted to be silent at the table either, she just wanted him to at least get a good meal in since they were stuck in the house.
The older Gilbert headed slowly for the staircase and went up, finding herself at Jeremy’s bedroom door and giving a couple of knocks. “Jer? Dinner’s ready,” she said, trying to keep her tone light and casual, ignoring the lump that formed in her throat. “You should really come down and eat.”
Hearing his sister’s voice, Jeremy groaned and contemplated just ignoring her and pretending he was asleep or something; after all, both doors were locked so even if she tried coming in through their joint bathroom, she wouldn’t be able to get in. And he did ignore her for a moment or two, but finally spoke, “I’m not hungry.” Which was of course a lie, because the pot had made him hungry, but he wasn’t about to admit that to her.
She knew that was a lie right when she heard it. Of course he didn’t want to come down to eat because Elena had invited Damon over, worried about her boyfriend as much as she was about her brother. She didn’t know if Jeremy would ever really like Damon, but he could at least act civil since he was the man she was choosing to be with. She remembered what her boyfriend had said during a dinner they had a few days ago, how she had to be strong for them too and draw a line. “I know you’re mad because I wanted Damon here,” Elena started, leaning against the door jamb, burying her hands in the back pockets of her jeans. “But I’m allowed to worry about his well-being as much as I do about yours. You’re going to have to accept that. He’s a part of my life and I love him, even if you can’t possibly understand why.”
Damon stood at the bottom of the stairs watching Elena talk through the closed door. He had never dealt with anyone so immature in his life. He knew that Elena was frustrated with him, and she had every right to be. Jeremy owed her a lot more than she was getting, and eventually she was going to give up, and really, who could blame her. If she stayed with him, he would never allow her to be happy. “I could always pick the lock,” he offered, looking up at Elena, the corner of his mouth curled up. “If he really wants to act like a little kid, I can take the doorknobs off completely, but this does also give us a lot of time to ourselves.” He offered a smile to make her feel better.
Jeremy rolled his eyes as he listened to Elena and sent Myrcella another text before responding to his sister, who technically wasn’t actually his sister, but she didn’t know that he knew that yet, “Then why don’t you go downstairs and spend time with him instead of having me around as a third wheel. I mean, according to him you don’t want to spend time with me cause I make you unhappy.” When Jeremy was high, he tended to come down with a case of, talk first, think after and now was no exception.
Elena sighed, crossing her arms over her chest while she stood out in the hallway and listened to her brother respond after a moment. The girl glanced down the stairs at her boyfriend but she wasn’t able to conjure up a smile to give him back. She was at a loss for what to do--besides break up with Damon, which wasn’t happening. She couldn’t lose her own happiness just to please someone else. “I don’t want to spend time with you when you don’t even want to give me a chance to try and make things better. All you want to do is fight, and I’m done doing that,” she said with a sliver of anger and frustration in her voice. “I’m not perfect, I don’t always know what I’m doing, but I’m human, Jeremy. I have a life just like you do. I have wants and needs and I get annoyed and hurt.” She took a deep breath then looked back at Damon, still at the bottom of the stairs.
“I’ll be downstairs. You can join us if you want, or just keep to yourself.” Elena turned to the staircase and headed down them quickly, knowing her brother would be able to hear her footsteps. She stopped in front of her older boyfriend, giving a shrug.
Damon shrugged back at her and walked up the stairs. It was his turn to have a conversation with a door. “A lot of people call me stubborn,” he said to it. “I’m sure that you don’t want to hear this, so I’ll make it short and sweet. Your relationship with your sister, or lack of, is not her fault. She doesn’t need to apologize for being happy, and having someone she loves in her life. You can hate me all you want. I honestly quit caring quite awhile ago, but you still owe her some decency. I can tell you that no matter what you do, no matter what you say, we will not be splitting up. You don’t have to like it, but that is how it is. Feel free to come eat, or stay here protesting something that I give zero fucks about. Oh, and the final thing, which needs to be said is that I don’t hate you.” He shrugged at Elena again and walked back down the stairs, giving her a quick peck on the way to the kitchen.
Jeremy didn’t actually hear a word of what Damon said, because he’d put in his earbuds and put on his ipod after Elena finished and he sent another text to Myrcella. Any other time he would have just climbed out his bedroom window and gone to see her or someone else in order to escape everything else, but both cars were covered in ash and he’d have to find something to cover his face with and it would just be too much of a hassle. He wasn’t sure how much longer he spent lying on his bed, listening to music and texting his girlfriend, but eventually he was unable to ignore the rumbling of his stomach and decided to go down and find something to eat. Earbuds still in his ears, he slid his phone into his pocket then headed down, ready to ignore Damon and Elena, if he had to.
Elena tried to enjoy dinner with Damon, though she still worried over her brother--it was in her nature. She couldn’t close herself off like Damon could, and it was harder for her to say ‘screw it’ when things weren’t going her way. Still, she couldn’t let anyone get in the way of her own happiness, not if it meant she was going to be miserable. Maybe it was selfish being with the man she loved, but Elena couldn’t care. It was her life to live and she had to seize it.
Giggling at the table beside Damon, Elena played with her spaghetti and watched the man with pleased brown eyes. He always knew how to make her laugh and right now, more than ever, she needed it. She always liked the silly stories about his students anyways. Elena was going back to her meal when she heard Jeremy coming down the stairs, the girl looking up and noticing he had his headphones in, obviously so he could ignore them. He seemed to be on the hunt for something to eat, but there was a plate at the table and plenty of spaghetti and garlic bread left..not that he would go for it. She sighed, licking her lips quickly and glancing at her boyfriend.
Damon didn’t pay any attention to Jeremy. The kid was more interested in punishing his sister because he felt like he wasn’t getting enough attention, and that wasn’t any way to have a relationship. He had to realize that his attitude would never work, but apparently he didn’t because he kept on and on. Damon was over it, but unfortunately Jeremy wasn’t. He and Elena would end up together, and he wasn’t going to worry about anything else at the moment. Instead, they found themselves at the table laughing over something the students had done in class.
Damon looked up at Jeremy, just tipping his hand towards the bowl. Then he turned back to Elena just as quickly. He imagined Jeremy would go to the refrigerator, like the food he would serve Elena would be bad. Really, he was very over the attitude.
If that was really what Damon thought this was all about then he was so off the mark. Jeremy’s opinion of Damon had more to do with what Damon had done to his sister and less about how much attention Jeremy was getting. That may have been part of it, but the bigger picture of that Damon was just bad for Elena. He was the worst type of human being and Elena was too brainwashed to see it. His attention was focused on the cabinets, knowing exactly what he was looking for so he didn’t even see either Elena or Damon glance in his direction.
Reaching the cabinet, he opened it to get a glass then proceeded to the fridge to fill it before going to another cabinet to retrieve a half filled bag of chips.
Elena bit into her bottom lip and held back a sigh, her brown eyes studying her boyfriend while her fork swirled around the pasta. After a moment she set the utensil down and got up from her chair at the table, walking over to her brother in the kitchen and moving to tug out one of the earbuds so he would be able to hear her. “Can you eat some real food? Even if you take it up to your room, I’d feel better than you devouring a bag of chips,” she told her brother, crossing her arms over her chest and raising an eyebrow.
Jeremy had seen Elena coming towards him, but he’d ignored it as long as possible until she pulled the earbud out of his ear and spoke to him, “I’m not that hungry.” His eyes were bloodshot and if she hadn’t already smelled the pot while he’d been smoking it, there would be no doubt that he was somewhat high. “I’ll be fine with this.”
Suddenly the brunette gave a gasp, her mouth falling open. “Are you high!?” She couldn’t believe this, things were already bad enough and her brother was now high tonight, giving absolutely no care about anything, it seemed. What the hell was she supposed to do about it? Elena stepped back and ran her fingers through her hair, still looking more than a little concerned and uncertain. She looked over at her boyfriend with a frown.
Damon’s face pulled up that one sided smirk he managed so well. “Of course he’s high,” he said, staying right where he was. “He’s trying to get to you. It’s really too bad this is all he can think of. The poor kid feels neglected and left out which is entirely his own fault.” He could see right through the game. Too bad he wasn’t going to win it like that. Jeremy wanted sympathy, but he was making himself look stupid. Then again, if he kept going, his next home could be rehab, and they could take care of the little shit for awhile. Damon suppressed a laugh, sitting back to watch the self destruction that would get absolutely nowhere.
“Oh don’t act like you don’t know that I get high,” It really wasn’t a secret that Jeremy had smoked pot in the past. Their parents might not have known, but Elena and Katherine certainly knew. “It’s not hurting anyone, so what’s the big deal.” He spoke to Elena, ignoring Damon. Rehab as a result of smoking pot on occasion was the most ridiculous thing he had ever heard and he wasn’t going to acknowledge what he was saying. As usual Damon had it all completely wrong. What Jeremy really wanted was to see if Elena would say anything in his defense or let Damon just get away with talking about him like that.
Elena sighed--yes, she knew her brother would get high, but did it have to be tonight? ...No, of course it did. He was going to hole himself up in his room and wait until the ash was gone and Damon could go home. He was going to avoid, which wasn’t very helpful, but it wasn’t like Elena could force him to sit down for dinner or do anything else. She was his sister, not his parent. “So you’re just going to be getting high the whole time, Damon is here,” the brunette asked, pointing back her boyfriend at the table. “That’s it?”
Damon just rolled his eyes. “He’s already made up his mind that he wants to get to you. He can’t let you just be happy. He’s got to make sure you are as miserable as he is, and he doesn’t care that if it was just the two of you, you wouldn’t be happy anyway. Let him go and show us what a brat he is.” He knew Jeremy would ignore him, but he also knew he was listening. He fully expected to be blasted across the network with something that wasn’t really the truth.
Jeremy wasn’t exactly surprised that Elena wasn’t saying anything to Damon and his brows furrowed slightly. His eyes may have been bloodshot and somewhat glassy, but if Elena really looked she’d see the hurt there as a result of her not seeming to care about the things Damon was saying. Still ignoring Damon, he gave Elena a look as if to say, ’Are you just going to let him talk about me like that?’ “Did I say that? I still have homework to do after all.”
Elena held up both hands and squeezed her brown eyes closed tightly, licking quickly at her lips in a nervous gesture. “Okay, both of you,” she breathed out. They needed to get along if the next few days, or however long this was going to last, was going to be anything other than torture. Brown eyes flicked open again and she tugged the bag of chips out of Jeremy’s hand and tossed it onto the counter, going to fetch him a plate of spaghetti that she forced on him with a fork. “At least eat real food, alright? None of that junky stuff. We have enough of that around here. This will be better for you.”
She stared into her brother’s eyes and quirked her mouth into a little frown. “If you need anything, I’m here. I don’t mind helping.”
Damon simply continued to eat. He refused to let Jeremy bother him. He was going to be in Elena’s life whether the little brother liked it or not. He could play all the games he wanted and would find himself alone at 18, a few very short months away. He could also choose to be included, but he didn’t think the kid would have the common sense to see his attitude now was a losing hand. Either way, Damon was staying in it for the long haul.
As Elena shoved the plate into his hands, Jeremy sighed, “Fine.” Truthfully, there was a small part of him that was glad that Elena had actually done something instead of just letting him do what he wanted. Besides, he was a lot hungrier than a bag of chips would satisfy, “I’ll eat in the living room.” Before he walked away, Jeremy met Elena’s eyes and nodded then walked past the table where Damon was, picking up the container of grated cheese on his way then settled on the couch in the living room, taking his ipod out of his pocket and turning it off.
While the last thing Jeremy wanted was to be downstairs near Damon, he wasn’t going to let him think he was right. He was going to let Damon believe everything else he thought he knew, because Damon knew nothing about what was really going on with Jeremy and was just causing himself to look like an ass by assuming that he did.
Elena sighed contentedly after Jeremy accepted the plate and she gave him a little smile when he looked at her on his way to the living room. She let him go, coming back over to the table and taking her place beside Damon again. The brunette looked over at her boyfriend and before starting in at her food again, she moved to touch the history teacher’s hand, running her fingers along his warm, pale skin. She was happy that she could get through to Jeremy in some form and it showed.
Damon’s fingers wrapped around Elena’s hand. He leaned over and gave her a quick kiss. “Don’t worry about it,” he told her. “It will be you and I, just like it should. One day, he might be happy for you. For now, we will just enjoy the night.”
