There were few things as wonderful as sleeping in your own bed after weeks in a hospital bed. Lightning thought she'd get better sleep on hers for certain. It was a very nice, quality mattress with just enough give and the pillows were perfect. Serah'd done most of the picking there, and Light couldn't complain.
But several hours after sinking onto the mattress and closing her eyes, Light still wasn't sleeping that well. Her sleep was light, feverish, with quick snatches of dreams. She was too light a sleeper after boot camp, and the slightest noises kept waking her up.
Some of them were even coming from her own house. Was that... Serah? She sounded like she was being attacked! Lightning swung out of bed and grabbed the nearest weapon she could find, then headed out of her room and towards her sister's.
This probably wasn’t the smartest thing that Booker had ever done, but Serah seemed to have a thing for older men and he wasn’t going to complain, especially now that CERTAIN PEOPLE didn’t have an excuse to bitch at him. And maybe if it pissed Neena off it would be worth it.
Okay it was worth it for the view, too, and he ran his hands up Serah’s chest as she moved on top of him.
Serah couldn’t really explain it, but Booker felt….safe. And she owed him a lot, some of which she couldn’t ever repay. And it was a lot of fun, too. She didn’t love him, and she didn’t think she ever could. She’d fallen for one person last year and it hadn’t ended well and well Light couldn’t ever know about that. He didn’t deserve to die!
And this time was a lot different. She was on top, she was older and she knew better. She’d been stupid back then.
The sounds were getting louder and more perplexing. Light wasn't sure what the hell was going on in there, but whatever it was it didn't sound right. She clicked the safety off of her pistol and burst through the door, only to get an eyeful of her sister's bare back and behind and...
"Oh for-- SERAH!" Lightning shouted. She squeezed her eyes shut instantly and wished she'd never, ever seen that. There was no amount of liquor that was going to erase the mental image carved onto her retinas.
Her face was red. She should have realised what those sounds were, but she'd never really done anything like this herself and she'd never in a million years thought her sister would bring someone home. Let alone that man. Her gun was still pointing in their general direction.
Booker scrunched his face up, because Light’s timing was spectacular. He grunted, then waved a hand at her while Serah froze.
The blonde turned her head, pulling sheets up to cover the both of them. “You’re supposed to be in bed!”
Lightning's hand started to shake a bit, and the gun she was holding in it trembled a bit from side to side. She slowly lowered it and clicked the safety back on it before someone got hurt.
Not that she didn't think Booker deserved it. He deserved to be hurt, but she didn't need to go to jail for it.
Something told her Serah wouldn't have forgiven her either, "And you're supposed to be... ...not sleeping with him."
"I trust him," she said. Serah had always thought she was a good judge of character. Even if Booker was rough around the edges and a bit of an asshole there was still something about him that she thought made him a good man.
Even Booker looked shocked at that admission. "Look, uh..."
"YOU shut up," Light growled, pointing at him. The gun was still in her hand, so he was momentarily facing the barrel of it again. It was actually too heavy to hold up for long in her current state, though, and she lowered it again.
Her eyes were still on Serah, "You trust him. You remember that crazy woman in the hospital. I bet even she doesn't do that. Why do you think she gave you his number?"
Booker held up his hands, which had been on Serah’s breasts before, because that was probably a good idea.
“Maybe she thought he needed to be distracted.” She rested her hand on one of Booker’s more recent scars. “He’s a bit of a fixer upper.”
“And you think you’re the one to do it, is that it?” Lightning asked, though she sounded like she already knew the answer and it was making her even more grumpy than before.
“Claire,” Serah got out of bed, wrapping a sheet around herself while Booker just laid there like he didn’t even care.
"Well? Do you?" Claire frowned, and leaned against the doorframe. This was all too much to take in. This man had wrongfully deflowered her sister years ago, and now this?
"Are you sure it isn't just that he was your first? I hear it's natural to get clingy."
“She’s gotta point,” Booker said, sitting up on his elbows.
“Booker!” Serah rounded on Booker, glaring at him angrily. He laid right back down. She turned back to her sister. “Yeah he’s my first but he’s not my only.” A beat. “That sounds like I’ve done it more than I have.”
Is this what her sister got up to while she was off in foreign countries getting shot at!? Lightning started to shake, though she didn't know why she was so angry about it.
Serah was old enough to make her own choices. Maybe that was it - she'd never been there for her sister during the right times. Now that she had Serah back, her sister was all grown up.
"Were the rest of them fixer uppers too?"
Serah looked like she’d been slapped. “Just because you’re so stuck up about sex doesn’t mean I have to be.”
Booker discreetly reached for his pants while the sisters argued. Yeah. this had been a bad idea and he felt really dirty.
"That's NOT what I--" Lightning drew back a bit. Serah looked like she'd been slapped, and the look Serah was giving her for it made Lightning feel like she'd been slapped in return.
She couldn't take it when Serah looked at her like that, "Serah..."
It was an apologetic tone. The gun in Lightning's hand raised up again, though, to point at Booker, "Stop right there."
Folding her arms, Serah lowered her head, feeling a little ashamed about it now. Maybe part of her had been acting out. Okay a large part of her had been.
Booker froze with one leg in his pants and the other on the bed, which flashed his goods at the both of them. “...yeah?”
"Next time you sleep with my sister, wear a condom or I'm shooting it off," Lightning threatened. She could at least do that. She wasn't the best parental figure and she wasn't the best big sister, but she could threaten people still.
There was enough steel in her to let Booker know that she meant every word, too. Even if, right at the moment, she couldn't manage to aim her gun without it making her muscles shake.
"Don't you fucking leave, either. You'll stay here like a man and eat breakfast in the morning."
Booker pulled his pants on anyway and gave her a salute. “Yes ma’am.”
Serah covered her face, then rolled her eyes. “I’m on the pill. For the record.”
"He might have something. You're not the only one he sleeps with," Lightning replied. She didn't even care if she was offending him while he was standing right there, and she didn't bother to give him an apologetic look, either.
The fact that her sister was on the pill was just icing on the cake, really. They'd grown so far apart. Lightning worried that they'd never feel close again. She let out a sigh, and pushed herself off the door frame, "As you were."
And with that, she started walking back towards her bedroom.
Booker actually did look offended, but he didn’t really blame her. Look at him. Scruffy and a little scarred up. He poked Serah in the arm. “Go after her. I ain’t gonna get in between sisters.”
Serah ran after Lightning. “Wait!”
Lightning stopped walking, and leaned against the wall, staring straight ahead. She didn't know what the hell she was doing. She didn't know how to talk to her own sister, "... yeah?"
"I'm not a little kid anymore," Serah started. "But I still screw up sometimes and I'm going to screw up. You can't stop that. But I don't want..." She tugged on her sister's arm. "I know it's been weird. But I still love you. Don't think I don't love you. I'm so happy you're back, I'm so happy we can be a family again. And I'm not making any sense and I know I'm not. I don't even...." she waved her hand in the direction of her bedroom. "I don't even know what I'm doing there. His friend gave me his number and we talked and then...stuff happened."
"I know you're grown up," Lightning replied, her voice a little rough. She was trying not to cry.
She let Serah tug her around, and wrapped one of her arms around her sister, "I just don't know what I'm doing either. We haven't been a family in a long time. I don't know how to talk to you. I don't know if I'm doing anything right. I don't know if you even need me."
“You saved me, you know. From a really bad place.” She burrowed her face against Light’s chest, careful of the wound there. “I want to try harder. And maybe I’ll try to rebel a little less. Because I need you, I really, really need you.”
Moments like these were rare. Lightning tucked each one of them away, because Serah was the only thing she had. Serah was literally the only thing saving her from going insane.
She squeezed her sister - not with nearly as much strength as she used to be capable of, and rested her head on Serah's shoulder, "I need you, too. I like to pretend I don't. But I do."
“We’re both probably screwed,” she replied, sniffling a little bit. Getting to see Claire again had kept her sane her entire time in the foster system. Just that faint hope.
"We're definitely going to fuck this up," Claire agreed. She leaned against Serah a bit, and let out a bit of a sigh. The adrenaline rush from all the excitement was starting to wear off and she felt like her body was made of jello.
She whispered, in a tiny voice, "Can you help me back to bed?"
“Yeah…” She straightened and started to gently guide Light back to her bed. At least Booker had stayed put!
"Thanks..." Light muttered, though her tone was less grumpy and more adoring. After she was tucked away in bed, she patted Serah's arm, "I'm... sorry."
"I forgive you," Serah said, though for which thing even she didn't know.
