McCoy had taken the night off, though he was technically on call. He wasn’t expecting to have to come in, because even though the amount of traffic through the hospital went up on holidays, they had adequate staff around. There shouldn’t be a need to call him in. Fingers crossed.
He looked smart. Normally McCoy was a snappy dresser, but on special occasions like holidays, he went a little further. He was looking really really good when he arrived on Elizabeth’s doorstep in his grey suit and pink tie. Pink. That’s right, ladies and gentlemen. Joanna picked it out for him.
He knocked, holding a bouquet of flowers, and waited for her to answer.
Elizabeth was excited. She had been for the last week, but now date night was here, she was even more so. She heard the knock at the door and grinned to herself. All but bouncing up to the mirror just before the front door, she double checked her make-up, fluffed her hair again and smoothed down her dress before opening the door to Leonard. “Hi,” she grinned, feeling almost as giddy as a schoolgirl on her first date.
“Hi.” McCoy repeated. This definitely wasn’t his first rodeo. He had a couple decades of Valentine’s Days under his belt, and though he was always happy to spend time with Elizabeth, he definitely didn’t get the ‘giddy like a schoolgirl’ thing. He held out the flowers to her. “You look beautiful, Lizzie.”
“Thank you, and I must say that you look incredibly dashing, young sir,” Elizabeth grinned at him, a blush colouring her cheeks at his compliment. “Are those for me?” she asked quietly, referring to the flowers in his hand..
McCoy chuckled softly. “Why thank you, milady.” He said, giving a little bow. Then he nodded. “Pretty flowers for a beautiful lady? Hey, it’s Valentine’s Day. I made an effort.” He teased.
“Oh, so I’m not to expect this kind of gallant behaviour any other time of year?” she teased in return, reaching out to take the flowers from him and kissing him quickly on the cheek. “Let me just put these in some water and then we can go, ok?” she said, turning to hurry back to the kitchen and find a vase.
“Nope, this is once-a-year behavior.” Well, twice, if you considered anniversaries. But they didn’t really have one of those yet, so she could expect it once. Not that he didn’t care. He did. He just a) didn’t see the point in spending money on frivolous things that were just going to die anyway, and b) didn’t understand how flowers showed he cared more than simply being present did.
“As is the dinner and dancing I’ve got planned for tonight.” He said, stepping inside and closing the door behind him.
“Oh is that how it is?” Elizabeth grinned with her back to him as she filled up the vase and placed the flowers in it. “Well, I guess it’s a good thing I found out now before I fell in love with you...oh, wait…” she turned to face him and placed the vase on the island in the middle of the kitchen before looking up at him from under her lashes. She moved over to him and played with the knot of his tie as she spoke quietly. “So, where are we going tonight?”
Okay, he was smirking now. Honestly, he’d take her out to dinner and dancing whenever she wanted, so long as he had the time off of work. And he wasn’t neglecting Joanna. “Too bad. Should have asked the important questions on the first date.” He said, and stepped over to watch her with the flowers. But then she came to him and took hold of his tie. He loved it when women did that. “...out. Dinner. Dancing. Didn’t I make myself clear before?” He said, smirking even more brightly.
Elizabeth laughed at him, cocking her head to one side and looking up at him, fingers still playing with his tie. She grinned and pulled him down by his tie for a long kiss, which ended up with her leaning back against the counter and trying to catch her breath. “We could always stay in,” she half-joked breathily, eyes flicking hungrily between his lips and eyes. “Sam might object though,” she licked her lips.
“Well, we wouldn’t want to make Sam object,” McCoy said, his arms tightening around her a little. He took a half-step closer. “Besides. One night a year I’ll take you dinner and dancing. Don’t you want to take advantage? I even made reservations and everything.”
"Oh, well, when you put it like that..." Elizabeth grinned. "Whisk me off my feet, Mr Dapper Man," she leaned up and whispered in his ear. "We can save the kitchen sex for later," she pressed a quick kiss to his cheek and took his hand before heading to the door. "I'm off out Sam! See you later!" she called over her shoulder as she grabbed her jacket and bag. She heard some kind of reply from her friend and assumed she had heard her from having her head stuck in her marking. "Lead the way," she smiled up at Leonard.
McCoy gave a little chuckle at that, then offered to help her on with her jacket before they slipped out and headed to his car. “I’ve got reservations. I hear that’s the way you have to do things on Valentine’s Day, or you’ll never get a table.” He opened her car door for her, and stepped around to his own side to climb in.
"I'm very glad you did, there's nothing more embarrassing than turning up on the door without reservations on Valentine's day with nothing but charm," Elizabeth said as he started to drive. "I had an old boyfriend once who tried that. Thought he could flirt his way into getting us a table," she laughed, thinking of one of the two times she had tried dating John Crichton in college. "You've got much more class," she grinned over at him.
McCoy chuckled. “I try.” He said, turning onto the freeway. It was about a twenty minute drive to get to the restaurant. “At least I have more forethought.” He hadn’t done much else besides the flowers, the reservations. That seemed to be as much as he needed to do, really. His obligations were done. Well, besides following through with the night and making it one she’d remember.
"I'm just happy to be with you," Elizabeth smiled over at him, admiring his profile as he drove. She reached out and took hold of his hand. "Dinner and dancing is wonderful and the flowers are such a romantic touch, but I'm just so glad you're here," she told him genuinely. "I'm so lucky to be with you, I love you. You and Joanna both," she squeezed his hand and rubbed her thumb along the back of it.
McCoy threaded his fingers through hers and gave her hand a squeeze. “I love you.” He repeated after her. “We’re lucky to have you. Joanna talks about you all the time,” he added, releasing her hand so he could use both to drive. He had to switch lanes on the freeway. Of course, the reason Joanna talked about Elizabeth all the time was because the older woman had made McCoy’s life so much happier.
Elizabeth grinned slowly, eyes cast down shyly as her fingers played with the hem of her jacket. "Really? She does?" she asked quietly.
“Yeah. Of course she does. She talks nonstop about watching musicals with you, and then tries to convince me it’s all right to leave her home alone while we go out on dates.” McCoy said, chuckling. He pulled into the parking lot at the restaurant.
"Well, if she finds a musical in town that she'd like to see just tell her to let me know and I'll take her," Elizabeth smiled at him before getting out of the car. "And Sam's more than happy to stay with her if she wants you to get out more," she winked at him over the top of the car as she shut the door.
Mc Coy clicked the button on his keychain to lock the car, and then moved around her her side and offered his arm. “I’ll tell her. I’m sure she’d be thrilled to have a night out with you.” He led the way up into the restaurant and gave his name to the hostess. In five minutes they were seated toward the back with menus in hand.
“She’s welcome around mine and Sam’s anytime,” Elizabeth told him, feeling very touched that Joanna thought about her like that. She let him do his Gentlemanly thing and lead her to their table on his arm, thanking the waiter as he left them with menus, sitting at the table on the side next to his. “This place is fabulous Leonard, thank you,” she grinned at him, putting a hand to his cheek before leaning across the corner of the table and kissing him.
“Happy Valentine’s Day,” McCoy responded, then leaned forward and returned her kiss. Gently. He turned his attention back to his menu. “All right… beef? Beef for me.” He said, and flipped the page. “And wine?”
“Happy Valentine’s Day,” Elizabeth murmured happily after the kiss. She brushed her thumb against his cheek before looking down at the menu again. “I think I’ll have the chicken, please,” she flicked the menu over to the wine list and pointed to one on the list. “A red?” she asked him, showing him the menu.
McCoy picked a red off the menu, and bought the whole bottle. Someone would come out and pour it for them. He leaned back just a little in his chair, glancing around the restaurant. “Jim recommended this place to me.”
"It seems we have a lot to thank Jim for," Elizabeth smiled as she looked at him. "You've not been here before then?" she asked, curiosity mixed with a tiny spark of jealousy.
“No.” McCoy said, shaking his head. “I don’t go out as much as Jim does. I think he brought Hermione here, but I’m not sure.” It could have been some other girl. McCoy worked far too much to go out to eat all that often.
“You should, you scrub up ok,” Elizabeth teased with a wink, reaching out to straighten his tie even though it didn’t need straightening. She gently pulled him forward by his tie and kissed him swiftly. “Now, how about we order and then there was talk of dancing,” she smiled, their foreheads pressed together. There was a small dancing area she had spotted with a small band playing some soft jazz at the other end of the restaurant that had caught her eye as they’d entered.
“Right. Yes. Food.” All thoughts of eating had gone out of his head the moment her hand wrapped around his tie. He’d need to wear one more often around her, if she was going to use it as a leash for him. “...right. Then dancing. Beef? I said beef, right?” He babbled playfully.
“You’re cute when you babble,” Elizabeth grinned at him, pressing another kiss to his lips before leaning back and looking up to catch a waiter’s eye. Once he’d hurried over and she had ordered their food she took Leonard’s hand and lead him up to the dance floor, stepping up close to him once they were stood on the floor with a couple of other slow dancing couples. She gave him a sultry smile, sliding her hands up to twine behind his neck as they started to sway. “You never told me the outcome with Joanna and the cell phone.”
McCoy wrapped his arms around her and held her close as they danced. Valentine’s Day was one of those days where the band could get away with slow, romantic music all night long. McCoy didn’t mind. He wasn’t much of a dancer, actually, but hugging and swaying gently he could do. He chuckled, holding her close. “I won. She doesn’t get to have it while school is in session.”
Elizabeth laughed. “I love it when you’re all parental,” she told him quietly with a slight growl in her voice, the fingers of one hand carding through his hair and running her nails lightly over his scalp. If there was a day she was allowed to practically make out with her boyfriend on a dance floor then by god it was today.
McCoy chuckled softly, his hands moving down over her backside--briefly--and back up again. “Good. I do it a lot you know.”
"So I noticed," Elizabeth teased with a smirk before leaning in to kiss him slowly and deeply, pressing close to him despite it being a day when her breasts were tender. The heat radiating from him was wonderful, she thought to herself as they all but slowed to a stop.
McCoy returned her kiss, giving up on the dancing thing and simply holding her there on the floor. He didn’t let it get too out of hand, he knew they were in public, but he was pretty into it. His phone started buzzing. He had to pull out of the kiss so he could dig his phone out and check the front. Then he exhaled deeply, breaking into a frown. This was going to be very, very bad news.
“They need me at the hospital.” He said, softly.
Elizabeth could feel herself blushing as Leonard stepped back and pulled his phone out. She pushed some loose hair behind her ear and cast a quick glance around spying a couple of amused gazes from tables around the dance floor. She heard him breathe out and watched him frown, a sinking feeling growing in her stomach. “You have to go? Now?” she asked.
“I have to dig a bullet out of a cop,” he said, giving another hefty sigh. “I’m sorry Lizzie.” He’d have to pay for the meal, grab the boxes to-go and take her home. Who knew how long it was going to take for him to help out the wounded officer? “But I’ll make it up to you. I promise.”
"Oh, ok," Elizabeth tried not to sound too disappointed but probably failed miserably. She cast him a little smile and nodded as he said he'd make it up to her. It was ridiculous being upset, she knew what his job involved, knew it was important. A person's life was at stake and she was getting upset that their Valentine's Day plans had been scuppered. "We should go then," she nodded, taking hold of his hand and moving them back to the table where there food had been placed on the table in their absence. She gazed down at the food a little sadly as she started to gather her things.
McCoy felt guilty. His job was important, though, and they wouldn’t have called him in if it wasn’t life or death. He flagged down a waiter and asked him to put the meals in to-go containers. And to make it quick, he slipped the guy a $20. It only took a couple of minutes, and soon they were standing with to-go bags in hand, heading out toward their car. It was waiting for them right where they’d left it. He held the door open for her and stopped to steal a quick kiss before letting her in
“I promise. We’ll do something amazing, just you and me.” He said, nodding, as he turned the car’s engine on.
Elizabeth nodded, smiling over at him sadly. “I know. Don’t worry, I’m disappointed yes, but I know how important your job is,” she told him. “But you owe me something amazing now, you just admitted it so no take backsies,” she joked, still a little subdued.
McCoy chuckled as he pulled out of the parking lot. “No take backsies. Cross my heart and hope to die.” He said, lifting his index finger and crossing it in an x over his chest. “I’ll take you home. I’ll text you if I’m out of surgery before midnight.” He said, and turned onto her street.
“Text me if you’re not,” Elizabeth replied quietly, glancing up at him. “Let me know you get home ok,” she told him as he pulled up to the kerb.
McCoy nodded. “I’ll text you when it’s over. Don’t let me keep you up, though.” He leaned across the seat to give her a kiss. “I’m really sorry about tonight. I will make it up to you, though.”
Elizabeth smiled and nodded, pressing another kiss to his lips. “And you better believe I’ll collect,” she told him, smiling over her shoulder as she opened the door. “Good night, Leonard,” she said as she got out and shut the door, blowing a kiss after him as he drove away.
