Overall, Jace would quantify his relationship as going well. He was happy. He had a lovely girlfriend, exciting dreams, and he was looking forward to the future, not complaining about how rough it would be when the dreams took their full effect. It was actually the best time in his life, save for one thing. He wanted Alec and Clary to get along, and they really didn’t do very well. He wasn’t sure what to do about it, but he wanted to do something for them.
He pulled of his hoodie and went to his room, tossing it on his bed. By the nightstand was the picture that Clary drew of him. It was the one that was on the table when he and Izzy had first looked at the rest of them. This one was his and she saw him, or seemed to see him for exactly what he was. That drawing had been there from that day and had never left. It made him happy.
When she said she wanted to talk, he worried a little bit, but he knew he was probably being crazy. Wanting to talk was often more ominous sounding than it was. They were doing well. He was going with it.
Clary approached Jace's front door with only a slight amount of trepidation. She'd never been to a boys house before apart from Simon's, but that was different. Simon was like her brother, but Jace? Well they'd already proved in the cinema that they should probably have a chaperone if they were ever going to be alone together again. Regardless, she'd have to have enough self-restraint for both of them. She had things she wanted to talk to him about. She rang the bell and waited for him to answer.
Jace had finally managed to sit, socked feet propped up on the table. He had his guitar in hand, strumming at it idly, not really playing anything in particular. Sometimes he just liked to pluck strings. It had a very calming effect. He set it aside when he heard the door, and walked to it, stretching a little. Alec and Izzy would be gone for awhile, so he wasn’t worried about interruptions. “Hey,” he grinned, pulling the door open. “See, I told you I’d be here, safe and sound. Come on in.” He opened the door wider for his girlfriend.
“So I see, what kinds of mischief did you keep the boys from then?” Clary teased as she walked into his house, pausing in the hallway so he could greet her properly. She turned to him, hands on the strap of her bag as she looked up at him happily.
A proper greeting was something Jace could handle. He leaned down and kissed her, letting it linger there for a moment before bringing her in. He was glad that Alec and Izzy were out. He didn’t need them at the moment trying to figure out his relationship. It was new and it was good. He brought Clary over to the sofa, sitting with her. “We didn’t do anything amazing really. Just boys being boys. It wasn’t anything we could get in serious trouble for, and I was keeping the peace.” He was actually kind of proud of that. “Do you want something to drink?”
“Aww, ever the hero,” Clary teased with a grin, pressing a kiss to his cheek. “Do you have any orange juice or something?” she asked, lifting her bag over her head and placing it on the sofa beside her.
“I do,” he said, opening the refrigerator, looking at her through strands of blond hair that always fell in his eyes. He poured some into a glass, getting some sweet tea for himself. He brought the glasses back to the table, forgetting the coasters. “So, what’s up? You said you had something to tell me.” He had no idea what that could be. He was pretty sure it wasn’t bad.
"Yeah...umm, about that," Clary quirked a smile at him. "I had some more dreams and...It might be easier if I show you," she said, routtling in her bag for her sketchpad and stele and placing them on the table. She used the stele to draw a rune in the corner which glowed when she finished, then took his tea and slowly placed it inside the piece of paper, leaving only the 2d version looking back at them. She looked up at him nervously, worrying her lower lip between her teeth as she waited for his response.
Oh, so this wasn’t an ‘ooh, maybe we shouldn’t date’ conversation. He said a silent thank you and looked at the sketchpad. “Wow,” he said, watching her draw. “You are better at them than I am, that’s for sure.” He watched her take the tea, surprised at what it left. “Does it always work like that? Which rune is it anyway?” He got up to get his own notebook, which had rough sketches of runes that he saw in his dreams. Each time he got a good vision of one, he tried to get it down on paper before the memory faded. “More importantly, do you think it would work?” He smiled at her, thinking of trying one on him. It had been an interest since the dreams started and now he felt they were getting closer to actual testing.
“Well I have natural talent when it comes to drawing anyway,” Clary grinned at him cheekily and threw him a wink. “I have no idea what it is, this is the only one of these things I’ve ever drawn. It’s worked the two times I’ve done it so far,” she explained, reaching into the paper, taking hold of the handle of the cup and pulling it out of the paper to hand over to him with a little smile as the paper she had pulled it from disintegrated. “Try it,” she indicated the tea in her hand.
He continued to look at the page, rolling his eyes a little when she spoke of natural talent. “Mine is my impressive wit.” She did have that talent though. “That… “ He had never seen anything like it. Even an illusionist couldn’t do it so well. “Show me what to do again.” He picked up another piece of paper, trying to draw the rune. The first one didn’t look so good, so he picked up another. “Here, draw it on the paper then I’ll trace over it.”
“Sure, I don’t know if it’ll work,” Clary pulled the piece of paper closer to her and drew the rune out again, pushing the paper back in front of him when she had finished. “But give it a go,” she smiled at him confidently.
He picked up his own stele and traced the lines evenly, putting all his focus into the rune. He wasn’t sure of the exact meaning, but he supposed that he didn’t need to know that. It looked good when it was finished. “Alright, now let’s try this.” He held his breath, hoping that it worked with the cup just like hers had.
“Just relax, it’ll come to you,” Clary told him with a smile, before cupping his cheek and leaning forward to press a shy kiss to his lips.
He returned the kiss with a longer one of his own, letting himself get more distracted than he should have, but he considered it very worth it. He was smiling when he pulled back. “Okay, where were we?” He looked back at the page and then back to Clary again. “Oh right, we were doing this. He put a hand up to her cheek, cupping it with smooth fingers. He kissed her again, longer and deeper.
Clary giggled against his lips as he all but pounced on her. She returned his kiss enthusiastically, one of her hands reaching up to slide a hand behind his neck while the other found the front of his shirt and curled her fingers into it as she melted under his mouth. She hadn’t had a boyfriend before. Hadn’t kissed anyone but her mom or Simon on the cheek before, but kissing Jace was addictive. It felt right and she didn’t want to stop. Despite the fact that he was supposed to be trying out the rune. She leant back against the sofa, still kissing him.
Jace knew he was supposed to be doing something, but kissing was such a nice distraction, and it had been awhile since he had anyone in his life on any sort of regular basis. He could always pick up girls, hook up if he wanted, but he had set that aside for awhile, focusing on the dreams instead. It was just easier to ignore the fact that he hadn’t said anyone in his life and now he did. His attention left the cup and the rune, focused on Clary instead, threading fingers through her hair. His body pressed against hers more as his tongue found hers.
Clary let him take control of the kiss, trying to keep their bodies pressed against each other as long as possible. She loved the feel of his fingers running through her hair and his lips against hers but despite how right it felt to be in this kind of position with him she wasn’t sure she was ready for much more. After all this was only like her third kiss ever. She used the hand in his shirt to push him away from her slightly, not far, just enough to talk quietly. “Hey, you’re meant to be practising,” she teased, fingers playing with the hair at the back of his neck.
He sighed a little, but accepted her moving as a sign to cool down just a little. He didn’t want to push her too fast, even if all the instincts were there. “I am practising, very hard,” he grinned. “I could practice for hours. Oh, but you meant the cup. I guess we could practice that too.” He looked at her and then back to the cup, keeping the grin on his face. “Let’s try it again.”
“I bet you could practice for hours,” Clary teased with a smile. It felt easy being with Jace. Natural, like they’d always been like this. “And I imagine those runes you’ve been learning help a lot too,” she grinned wickedly.
“Strength and speed are not just for combat,” he laughed. There was a light blush on his cheeks, partly because they had gotten a little heated, and the other part from such a suggestive reference.
“So let’s draw those runes.” He took a piece of paper and went to work, sketching another rune by hand without having to trace it. The first one hadn’t worked. He wasn’t really sure why. Now it was better freehand. He set the cup on it, but it didn’t budge. “How do you make it go in there?”
Clary bit her lip with a little giggle and shook her head at the double entendre then sat up next to him. “I’m not sure really, I’m not really thinking of anything when I’m putting the cup into the paper, more when I’m drawing the rune I guess,” she shrugged, looking down at the symbol he’d drawn. “When I’m making the rune I just think of hiding things and keeping things secret and the images those kind of things conjure up. Try that,” she suggested.
“Good, cause trying to mentally tell it to go in wasn’t working,” he laughed, cheeks flushed just a little. He had to focus, but his mind kept turning back to her. “Alright, let’s do this again.” He pushed the last one away and took another piece of paper. He looked at the rune again, focused on the detail, and started drawing, thinking of hiding things, trying to envision the teacup disappearing into the paper.
Once Jace was able to harness his brain into one place, it was much easier. He had to stay on the cup, focus on hiding the cup. He took it by the handle and set it on the rune, watching it disappear almost as if it went from a three dimensional object into a two dimensional object. “Now that is … so freaking cool,” he breathed, eyes wide with appreciation and pure amazement that it actually worked. “I should do that with all the plates, and make Izzy and Alec take them out if they want one. It’s good practice.”
Clary grinned at him as he celebrated his achievement. She ran her gaze over him, he really was beautiful. She couldn't help herself as she reached out and combed the fingers of one hand through his hair with an indulgent smile. "Knew you could do it really," she told him confidently, leaning forward and placing a kiss on his cheek. "But you realise that if you do that to Izzy she will kick your ass," she teased. "And in high heels to boot," she pointed out with a smile.
He turned his head to look at his girlfriend with an impish smile. He gave her a quick kiss, still happy over this achievement, which was huge. He was getting more confident in his fighting skill, but this was a bit different. “Izzy would be mad, but she would make me teach her how to do it, so I think she would spare the heel. Plus, she doesn’t like getting anything on her shoes, blood included. Alec, however, would be pissed.” He loved his cousin, but he also liked to tease him, and boys would be boys. “I should do this to all of his clothes, and hang all the pages on hangers.”
"There's going to be a blood bath," Clary rolled her eyes with a grin, fingers still playing with the hair on the back of his neck.
“So worth it,” he laughed, pulling his girlfriend into another kiss. He had learned a lot today, and would surely be practising that trick long into the night, but for now, he wanted to enjoy some time with his girlfriend, and her lips.
