Where: Shopping centre
What: Random meeting
Rating/Warning: Low. None.

Jane had decided there was nothing for it. She simply had to go shopping for some new trainers since her faithful old ones were all but literally falling off her feet as she walked. She didn’t like shopping, she’d never been a girly girl so when her other girl friends had been at the mall, buying nail varnish and hair accessories or whatever, she had been working on equations and textbooks.
But today as she walked through the mall, she saw a sight that stopped her in her tracks. She could have sworn she saw...herself...but that was impossible, wasn’t it?
Padmé had been in the mall to pick up some new clothes. She had quite a few from her dreams, but none of them were very appropriate to wear while in court. And while she had some nicer clothes from law school she was pleased with her latest paycheck and decided to treat herself. She hadn’t wanted Anakin to suffer through her shopping spree so she had gone by herself and was currently walking down the middle of the mall with a few bags in her hand.
She passed by Jane and only vaguely registered that she had passed by someone who looked familiar. It made her slow down a little as she processed that information and turned her head to look behind her.
Jane turned and looked at the girl who seemed to be her doppelganger and saw the other woman had stopped and turned to look at her too. “Umm, hi, I’m Jane, Jane Foster,” she introduced herself, holding out a hand to shake the other woman’s.
“Hi…” she answered cautiously as her brow furrowed in confusion. This was a very strange way to meet someone, but the woman looked so much like her. It was a little unnerving if she stopped to think about it. She reached her hand out to take the woman’s and shook it confidently, “I’m Padme Amidala. Nice to meet you.”
“I’m uh...I’m Jane, Jane Foster,” Jane introduced herself with a smile. “Well that is...remarkable,” she shook her head as her eyes ran over features she was used to seeing only in the mirror. “The similarity is uncanny,” she said in amazement.
“It’s a little unnerving,” she couldn’t help but admit it to the other woman. They looked eerily similar and it was like looking in a mirror. The idea of dopplegangers was something she was familiar with, especially in her dreams, but actually seeing someone that looked like her in real life was a whole other situation. She was almost surprised she hadn’t broken out in goosebumps yet.
"That's one way of putting it," Jane agreed with a quirk of her brow. "Where are you from?"
“I’m originally for Oregon, but I’ve been in California for a while. I moved here the other summer to do some internships after college and now I’m working and living here. What about you?” Padme had thought she had seen the woman on the network before, but there were far too many people for her to place them all. She should have noticed if there was a woman who looked similar to herself.
“I’ve been here for a little over a year but I grew up out in the country in Colorado Springs,” Jane replied. “Not got any family from there have you?” she joked lamely.
“Oh, I’ve never been there before, but you never know! Maybe my mother has a secret twin or something. It’s so strange that we look so much alike. I’m almost tempted to ask you back to my place to see if my boyfriend notices you’re not me,” Padme’s handmaidens in the dreams didn’t even look as much like her as Jane did. It would be amusing to see if Anakin could tell the difference, but she would never be that mean to her boyfriend.
“Oh I’m pretty sure he’d be able to tell, you’ve got a sense of fashion and I’m just...me,” Jane chuckled as she gestured to her jeans, t-shirt, favourite old jacket and beaten up looking sneakers. She must have looked every inch the mad scientist today.
“Ha, I don’t have much of a sense of fashion. I just tend to buy nicer clothing, but hey, nothing is better than a t-shirt and jeans combination,” Padme countered with a smile, “Are you on the Valar network?”
“I am on the Valarnet, not all that much, because I tend to get lost in my work, but I like to share the occasional scientific news article,” Jane replied with a smile. “And try and keep tabs on my friend Darcy, make sure she’s keeping herself out of trouble,” she joked. “How about you?”
“Ha, I know how it can go trying to keep people out of trouble,” it brought Anakin’s drunken anger back to her mind when he was ranting on the network. But Jane’s comment did earn a chuckle from Padme, “I’m on there. I post things about my dreams occasionally, but I usually just read it for updates on my friends. It’s a pretty interesting network.”
“You have dreams too?” Jane asked curious, wondering if they dreamt the same sort of thing seeing as they looked so similar. “What sort of things do you dream about?”
“Yep. They’re kind of weird since there’s a couple other people who dream the same stuff as me, which is strange and reassuring at the same time. Basically I dream of the future where people live in space. I am the young Queen of a planet when my dreams started and then it’s progressed into me fighting to help save the planets from evil forces. Definitely good vs bad type thing. They’re pretty interesting, what about you?”
“Oh, nothing so regal or noble I’m afraid,” Jane admitted. “I uh...I ran a guy over in mine. Twice,” she told her, feeling guilty despite her not actually doing the running over. “I took him to the hospital the first time because to be fair, my friend Darcy tazed him too, and then...the second time we discovered he was actually a God so...yeah...it’s uh...it’s interesting,” she gave an awkward laugh. “But Queen huh? I bet you get some awesome outfits,” Jane smiled at Padme.
“You ran a guy over and then found out he was a God? Wow, that’s kind of amazing. These dreams sound so ridiculous when you say them aloud, but they’re so utterly fascinating. So what happens with this God? It obviously doesn’t end with him in the hospital,” Padme countered with a playful grin. The dreams other people had were a bit of a fascination and she couldn’t believe how involved they all were, “And I do have some great outfits. Some of them have shown up in my apartment.”
"Yeah...the first time wasn't really my fault though, my friend Darcy was fighting over the wheel with me so..." Jane shrugged basically. "Well we weren't sure if he was, yknow, crazy or something so I kind of got into a fight with my mentor over him," she laughed a little awkwardly. "I haven't really dreamed beyond that so far, but Thor is just gorgeous. He's just...all man, if you know what I mean."
Padme couldn’t help but giggle a little at the description of Thor because that is probably how she would react if she ran over a very attractive God. It didn’t hurt that she found Anakin quite attractive, so maybe sometimes she got all gooey when she talked about him. “Sounds like some interesting dreams. It’s kind of nice when things are interesting and not completely boring. I know mine are just kind of intense because people are constantly trying to kill me. Sometimes I wish they’d go away.”
“Apart from the whole attempted homicide of a deity, mine have been pretty good so far,” Jane shrugged. “They’ve actually given me some good ideas for my research,” she told Padme. “Say, have you met people from your dreams here?”
“Yeah, the guy I’m dating is in my dreams. And I made friends with another person from my dreams and friends with someone that is from the same universe as mine, but not in my dreams,” it was still a little confusing that there was a whole other part of her dream universe that she would never dream about, “You?”
“Sounds complicated,” Jane laughed at the confusing story Padme laid out for her. “Well my best friend here is also my best friend in the dreams. She’s really cool and has been helping me, not just with my work, but y’know, getting out and about,” she explained. “I can get more than a little distracted sometimes.”
“It is so complicated, but it’s not that bad. I’ve got a boyfriend and a good friend out of the deal because of these dreams. That’s awesome that your best friend is both in your dreams and out. And I understand how it goes spending a lot of time on work and such. I did a lot of that while I was in law school,” Padme could definitely relate to Jane when it came to things like that.
“You’re a lawyer? That’s amazing, hard work I imagine but rewarding, yeah?” Jane enthused. If her head hadn’t been stuck in the heavens from a young age she probably could have applied herself to law almost as well.
“Yeah, it was a lot of schooling, but I really feel like I’m helping make a difference. I’m sure you understand how that goes,” She could imagine that Jane had the same mindset in wanting to make a difference in the world with her career. She couldn’t just sit idly by at a desk job doing nothing of real importance.
“I can imagine! I mean how many years of study is that? Seven? Eight?” Jane asked before giving a little shrug. “Well what I do doesn’t really affect anyone right now, but in the future, I’m hoping that it could potentially change how we travel in space,” Jane enthused with a bright smile.
“Yeah, it was eight years of torture. And I think that would be so awesome to do things involving space. Do you want to go up there yourself or are your feet firmly planted on the ground? I think I would have loved to go into space as a kid, but not as much anymore. Maybe if it becomes safer,” she pointed out with a grin. Jane had to be incredibly smart to have a love of space and Padme was a little jealous of some of the incredible things she was sure Jane had seen.
"Go into it?" Jane asked as if no-one had ever asked her that before. "Yeah, I'd love to! To observe the event horizon of a black hole? Super novae? Pulsars?! Maybe even find my elusive Einstein-Rosen bridge! That would be amazing. I could die happy," she laughed. "I never really entertained the idea of applying to NASA or anything though, too much of a free spirit research-wise for all of the suits, ties and 'Sir, yes Sirs'," she joked.
“Considering I have no idea what you just said then I think you’d be perfect to work up in space. You definitely seem like you know what you’re doing,” Padme teased a little, but she honestly meant it. Jane had a good grasp of her job and she hoped the woman would go up in space sooner rather than later.“ Well, maybe some day they’ll come out of the suit and tie aspect and bring more free spirits into the fold,” after she spoke she heard her phone beeped and reached into her purse to check it, “Oh no! I’m running late for a meeting. I better get going, but it was so lovely to meet you.”
“Absolutely, go, get to your meeting,” Jane smiled, gesturing for the other woman to go. “You too Padme, we should keep in touch! Especially if there are any fancy dress parties, we could go as each other,” she joked.
“Sounds like a fun time to me,” Padme commented with a laugh and gave her a wave, “Hit me up on the network if you ever need anything. Have a great day!” It had been so strange to meet someone who looked so similar to her, but it would be a fun story to tell Obi-Wan and Anakin when she saw them later.
