Flynn always brought food with him when he came to Rose’s place. Even though he didn’t have a lot of money to spend on it, he had some. He’d gone to the Farmer’s Market today, and was packing a big, reusable cloth bag full of vegetables. He knocked on the door, then leaned against the frame, carrying a big duffel with his stuff in it, and the bag of veggies. He was humming some silly tune to himself as he waited for her to answer the door.
Now I remember what I forgot to do. Rose smiled, standing up to get the door. She knew who would be waiting for her on the other side and opened it, sweeping her hand to issue him in. “Key. I need to give you a key!”
Flynn chuckled. “Isn’t that more something you’d do for a boyfriend than a couch crasher?” He asked, stepping through the doorway. He paused half-way in, though, and wrapped one arm around her for a quick hug and kiss to her hair. “What are you making for dinner? I brought zucchini.”
She shrugged. “You’re the closest thing to a boyfriend I have so it makes sense. I don’t have any other guy staying over at my place!” She returned the hug and smooshed his face with her hand when he kissed the top of her head. She shut the door behind them and took an extra key from her bowl, tossing it to him. “If I’m able to snag a guy you can give it back.” She tucked her hands in her back pockets, eyeing the bag. “You always come bearing yummy food. Zucchini? What goes with zucchini?” She frowned, turning to walk into the kitchen. She tried to keep a variety of food on hand, but what went with zucchini?
“Let’s see, I have chicken, pot roast from the other night...what looks good?” She opened the fridge so they could look in, glancing at the various of items on the shelves.
“Oh god. Pot roast? Count me in.” Flynn said, giving her a grin. He ignored the comments about being the closest thing to a boyfriend and the smooshed face, but took the key and put it on his keychain. “...you mean when you snag a guy. When some guy comes along and steals your heart out from under me.”
She rolled her eyes as she pulled the roast from the fridge, shutting it with her foot. “You never know, I could be one of those girls just meant to be alone. I already have Mickey here, I could take in a few more cats and become that crazy cat lady.” It was a pitying thing to say, one every bachelorette said in her time. Having a boyfriend didn’t really matter to Rose, but Valentine’s was coming up and it was hard not to think about how she would be alone. Well, not physically since John would be there, but it was a strictly platonic vacation, one that just happened to fall on the holiday. Still, it would be nice to share it with someone.
“And I should say the same to you! Lucky you haven’t found the one otherwise you’d actually have a bed to sleep in and not just a comfortable couch.”
“Now you’re just being ridiculous.” Flynn muttered playfully in response to her comment about the cat lady. He nearly rolled his eyes, but refrained. “I don’t know if I believe in the one... it’s more like the one right now...” He broke into a grin. “Hey, sometimes the one right now lets me sleep in her bed.”
“For being an author in romance, you seem to be a little out of the loop with it.” She shook her head, but there was a smile on her face. She could never tell if Flynn was being honest or trying to cover up how he really felt. She certainly believed in the one, but maybe it wasn’t suppose to be for everyone. She tried not to think of that as much, hoping she wouldn’t fall into the later category.
“Yeah, you would like that wouldn’t you? Maybe if we built a fort wall. I know your hands can travel.” She pointed her fork at him. “Don’t think I couldn’t defend myself if need be.” The thought was hilarious. As much as Flynn liked to tease and flirt, she knew he would never stoop to a level like that.
“How’d you want to cook the zucchini? Sautee? Grill? Boil?”
Flynn shrugged at the romance comment. He had a lot of romance in his life, just not follow-through. He could absolutely wine and dine four different girls in a week, but when it came to second dates? Third dates? Relationships? No. That wasn’t really in Flynn’s bag of tricks. And he laughed at the fort wall comment. “...I dunno, I might be too handsy, even for a fort.” He said, and gave her a wink.
“What’s easiest?” In response to how to cook the zucchini. “I just put mine in the microwave.” He put everything in the microwave.
“Well then you’re outta luck on sharing the bed,” she said, giving him a grin. She rummaged around in her kitchen, pulling out a pan. “Let’s sautee them. May not be the easiest, but it will taste the best!” She put a little bit of butter in the pan and let it melt. “Can you cut it up real fast?”
“Yup.” Flynn moved over to the counter where she kept the knives, and grabbed a cutting board. He sliced the zucchini pretty quick, then set the cutting board next to the stovetop where she was melting the butter. “...this is becoming a habit, isn’t it? Us cooking together.”
“Perfect!” Rose dumped the zucchini in the pan as it sizzled, stirring it with a wooden spoon. She glanced at him and gave him her signature tongue-slightly-sticking-out smile. “Yeah, kinda makes you feel all domesticated doesn’t it? Can you hand me the salt ‘n pepper?” They may joke about it so much, but Flynn really was the closest thing to a boyfriend. Well, a platonic boyfriend.
“Sure.” Flynn passed over the salt and pepper so she could season the veggies. “When are you going to start kicking me out of here because you want to bring your boyfriend home, huh?” He asked, almost as if he could read her mind. “I know I’m awesome and everything, but isn’t it time you started shacking up with somebody?”
Rose rolled her eyes, grinding some pepper and salt over their vegetable. “Even by the strange chance I do find a boyfriend, I won’t kick you out. This is your flat as much as it’s mine!” She tapped the spoon against the pan and let the zucchini cook a little. “But there’s no one I’m fancying at the moment. I don’t wanna try and find something if it isn’t meant to be, ya know?” She shrugged. Sometimes it would be nice to have someone to go home to, but Rose didn’t mind too much. She had Flynn and her friends, that was enough for now.
“I know.” Flynn said, breaking into a smirk. He shrugged his shoulders. “I won’t lose hope that you’ll find someone before I do.”
Rose gave him a small smile, shrugging her shoulders to match. “I’ll hope the same thing.” Her smile grew bigger as she nudged him in the side.
“Wanna watch a movie with dinner tonight?” she asked. “Hey, pop the pot roast in microwave will ya?”
“Yeah. Do you have anything with Mermaids in it?” Flynn asked, taking the pot roast and sticking it unceremoniously into the microwave. He punched a couple of buttons until the thing turned on, and then leaned back against the counter.
“Mermaids?” She raised an eyebrow and thought. “I might have the Little Mermaid, I gotta check. What other movies have mermaids in them?” She frowned trying to think. “And why mermaids?”
“Yeah. Mermaids.” Flynn broke into a little grin. “I’m putting them in my next novel, I think. Very fantasy. Possibly pirates, too.” He said. His books often had pirates in them. “Anything on Netflix? Like, documentary stuff?”
“Not sure, but we can check! Going down the way of fantasy eh?” She smiled, turning back to the zucchini and giving it another stir before rummaging around for a dish to put them on. “Can you cut the roast? I have some wine too...would you like a glass?”
“Well, all of my stories are fairly fantastical.” Flynn said, grinning. He took the roast out of the microwave and grabbed a sharp knife to cut it up. “Hey, I can’t say no to wine. You go ahead and pour.”
“Yeah true,” she said, setting the plates by him so he could put some of the pot roast on it when he was done. She moved to grab two glasses and then the fridge, choosing a sweet white. She was never very good at choosing which wines go with what foods, even after her trip, but she didn’t mind. She chose ones that she liked the taste of and she was sure Flynn wouldn’t mind.
She took two glasses and walked into the living room, flipping on the telly. “I’m gonna check on those mermaids documentaries,” she called back towards the kitchen.
Flynn was good at dishing up food and getting it ready to eat. He set the plates on the table while she went into the living room. “Hey, do you wanna eat at the table or in the living room?” He called out to her.
“Living room!” she called back, using her wii remote to search through Netflix. “Well, it seems like there isn’t too much in regards to mermaids.” She scrunched up her nose as she looked at the titles. “Silly really. I think I have Little Mermaid around here somewhere if you’d rather watch that?”
“Okay!” Flynn called back. He picked up the plates and headed into the living room. “No? That’s a bummer.” He frowned, but moved to the sofa, set the plates down on the table, and then flopped down himself. “...okay, that’s fine. The cartoon, yeah?”
“Yeah if I can find it.” Her voice was a little muffled as she rummaged around underneath her small entertainment center. She was sure she had a copy around here somewhere…
“Aha!” She held up the DVD, pulling her head out with a small cough. “I knew I had it.” She walked over getting the movie ready before tucking herself on the couch next to Flynn. “Brilliant! To my wonderful boyfriend before I have a real boyfriend.” She grinned, holding out her wine glass for a cheers.
