Over the course of the last week, Jeremy had, had a dream or two almost every night. The Lockwoods had, had their annual masquerade ball and a whole bunch of shit had gone down with Katherine. Stefan and Damon had tried to take her out only to find out that a witch had linked her to Elena, so anything that happened to Katherine would happen to Elena. Once they’d managed to subdue Katherine and lock her in the tomb, everything had seemed like it would be okay, but then Elena had been abducted. All the while, Jeremy had been developing feelings for Elena’s friend Bonnie. That made three girls now that his dream counterpart that, had feelings for and Jeremy couldn’t help but be just a little worried considering what had happened to both Vicki and Anna.
Stefan and Damon had eventually found Elena, but it had come with a whole new set of problems. Jeremy, wanting to spare Bonnie from trying to lift the spell on the tomb so that Stefan could get in to get the moonstone, which was in Katherine’s possession, Jeremy had stolen some of the powder that would subdue her and snuck in, only to get caught by her, which provided her with a food source that couldn’t die as a result of his ring. Katherine being his sister in real life caused Jeremy to feel a little nauseous when he’d woken up after that particular dream, at the thought of his sister feeding off him.
A lot of other things had happened, which included being jealous of a warlock that had shown an interest in Bonnie, his Uncle John showing up again as well as Jeremy finally kissing Bonnie. It did make him feel a little guilty because of Myrcella, but he knew that it was only a dream and it didn’t mean he was cheating or anything.
By the time the middle of the following week, Jeremy needed to take his mind off all these dreams, so he’d gone to the woods where he usually got high with Stiles, smoked half a joint then decided to head home once he felt he was able to drive. Halfway there, however, he passed a music store and decided to turn around and see if there was anything new out.
Jace, in spite of his modeling success, had stayed at the music store as his second job. His hours were not at heavy as they used to be, but music was his first love. He could never let go of a place that let him play his guitar when they didn’t have too many customers. He also played the other instruments around the way, picking up some drum rhythms, and some piano. The dreams had shown him the ability to play the piano, which had piqued his interest in it. He sat at it, trying to get the basic chords down without having to think so much about positioning.
He had several dreams lately, but he always wanted more. His dreams were not nightmares, but a brilliant array that portrayed him as a hero, a shadowhunter. He had taken them quite seriously, training in martial arts, spending countless hours at the gym, training on all the equipment. He was adopting a healthier lifestyle, fairly free of the drugs and booze, which were all too easy for a kid whose parents had been out of his life for some time.
He looked away from the piano when the door monitor rang. “Hi,” he said. They had a lot of regulars that came and went. He didn’t recognize this guy, but he was a good host. Anyone into music was welcome, or anyone just checking out music. “Can I help you find something?” He swept blonde curls out of his face, which immediately flopped back over blue eyes. On his arm was a rune, looking much like a general tattoo to a normal eye. He usually had at least one since he and his cousin had been practicing. He also intended to go spar later, and that rune would come in useful.
Jeremy’s brown eyes were still a little bloodshot and it was probably obvious that he’d been smoking, but he wasn’t actually as high now as he had been back in the woods. Hearing someone speak to him, he glanced at the blond, “What? Oh, no. I’m just looking around.” And killing time so that he wouldn’t have to be at the house by himself. It was a little better now that Elena knew he didn’t like being there by himself, but that still hadn’t stopped her from practically sneaking out to Damon’s earlier in the week and making him worry that something had happened to her. “Thanks though.”
Jace wasn’t stupid when it came to drugs. He had smoked a bit himself, but it really wasn’t his thing. Parties were a little different, but they were few and far between. Alec wouldn’t like it, and would surely give him a lot of shit for it. He didn’t judge though. “You sure. We have all kinds of new stuff, although I’m kind of a fan of the classics.” The guy did look a little lost, Jace decided. “Do you play anything? We’ve got some instruments too, if you want to give one a test run.”
Jeremy shook his head, “No, I don’t play anything. I’ve never tried.” There had been a point when Jeremy had thought that he should play the guitar, but that had never happened. He spent too much time rebelling and playing video games and finding time to actually do his homework to try and commit the time and energy he would have needed to learn to play an instrument. “I just came in to kill some time really.”
“This is a good place to kill time,” Jace nodded, “and if you ever decide you want to play, we can kill even more time.” He reached behind him and picked up a guitar, leaning against the wall. “I created this. It’s got a wood base that I polished and sanded. It’s electric so it doesn’t have to be hollow. I’ve done everything from the frets to the strings.” He tossed the strap over his head and strummed it a few times. It was already connected to the amp behind him, and the sound came clearly through. “This is the coolest job in the world. I can talk music and play all day.”
Jeremy quirked a brow at the other teenager, “You made that? How’d you do that?” He’d never known anyone who had made a guitar and if he didn’t have Jeremy’s attention before, he had it now. “Are you in a band or something?” Most of the guys he knew in school who played guitar were determined to start a band and become famous, but Jeremy doubted most of them would ever succeed.
“I was for awhile,” Jace nodded. “That was back when I lived in Vegas. It was more of a garage band than anything. Guitar kept me company when my dad kept moving around, or drinking around.” He played a few notes, stroking over the frets easily. “These aren’t too hard. You just have to have some decent wood and someone who can carve. I’m shit at carving, but luckily one of the guys who works here isn’t. I just had to sand it up later then get it all fixed up. It isn’t that much after that really.” Jace was a naturally easy going guy, and could talk to just about anyone, no matter what they were into. “Do you go to school? I graduated last year.”
“You lived in Vegas? What was that like?” Living so close to Vegas, Jeremy had always wanted to go, but until he turned twenty one, he didn’t see much point in going yet. After all, it wasn’t like there would be a lot he could do other than walk to strip and go to the over priced exhibits and things. What he really wanted to do was be able to gamble and drink on the street. Okay, so that wasn’t the only reason he wanted to go to Vegas, but it was one of them, “Yeah, Huntington Beach High. I’m a senior.”
“I went there,” Jace grinned. “It wasn’t a bad school. Honestly, I wasn’t the greatest student.” the thought of Vegas brought a smile. “I loved Vegas. It’s an entirely different world on the strip then it is outside of it. Outside, it’s like an almost normal town, but on the strip, the nightlife is insane. I wasn’t 21, but I still walked in and out of the casinos, played in a few lounges and clubs. It was fun. You could stay up all night and never get tired. I was guzzling energy drinks, trying to get through the day. My dad was more interested in drinking than doing much for me, so I was pretty much on my own. Finally we moved here my junior year.”
“You graduated last year? My sisters graduated last year too. Elena and Katherine Gilbert.” He knew it was a big school and not everyone knew each other, after all, he didn’t know everyone in his graduating class, but it’d be a small world if this guy did know his sisters. “I wanna go, but right now I don’t see any reason to until I’m at least eighteen, when I can gamble. Maybe for my birthday in October.”
“I do remember them kind of. I know who they are. We had different groups of friends.” Jace tended to run with the other musicians when he was in school. He definitely wasn’t around the cheerleader types. “They were cute, not that you want to hear that.” He flashed a wide grin. “I see one of them around the network. Dreamer, right? I don’t know if that’s a good or bad thing considering some of them. My dreams are cool as shit.”
Jeremy nodded, realizing why the guy seemed so familiar, “Yeah, we both have dreams. I’m Jeremy.” He didn’t mind hearing that his sister was cute, because that really wasn’t bad. It was hearing other things like when Elena and Damon talked openly about sex and stuff on the network that he didn’t want to hear, “Some of mine are alright and I’ve gotten some pretty cool things.” He held up his hand to show off the Gilbert Ring, which was on the same hand as where he wore his vervain bracelet now. “Have you gotten anything from yours?”
“I’m Jace,” he grinned. He wasn’t going to discuss Jeremy’s sisters further, as he knew that could get awkward, especially since one of them was dating a history teacher apparently. It wasn’t his business, but he could understand how it would be a little strange. “Nice ring. I wear one in my dreams. I guess I’ll get it sometime.”
He reached into his pocket and pulled out an instrument with a glowing tip. “This is a stele. It’s used to draw runes on our skin. In the dreams, I am a shadowhunter. We fight demons and other things in New York City.” He pulled up a shirt sleeve to reveal what looked like a tattoo. “This is a rune for strength. If it’s active, we have extra strength in battle. It fades once it has been used, and we draw more using this. I can draw quite a few of them now. It took a lot of practice on paper though. My girlfriend can draw even more.”
“I’ve gotten a couple things aside from the ring, so you might,” Jeremy knew the ring was kind of gaudy, but technically it was a family ring, even if it was from his dream family; not to mention it would protect him from any sort of supernatural death and considering the things that happened in Orange County, he’d need it.
When Jace pulled the stele out of his pocket, Jeremy quirked a brow as the blond explained what it was, “That’s pretty cool. Your girlfriend has the same dreams as you? Mine dreams about like castles and kings and stuff like that. She’s actually a princess in hers.”
“Look at this,” Jace said. He picked up a piece of paper, and traced a rune on it, focusing the way Clary had taught him. He envisioned hiding a pen, making it disappear. The lines were deliberate with that one thing in mind. When he was done, he took the pen next to him, which turned from a three dimensional object, into a picture on the paper. “Yes! Did you see that? How cool is that?”
“My girlfriend actually taught me that. I am the fighter of the group. I was born to slay the demons of the underworld. Clary’s talent is art, and she is so good at these things. I couldn’t imagine being a prince or anything. It might be fun, but maybe kind of boring.” He actually loved his dreams. “What do you do in yours?”
Jeremy watched as Jace took the pen and put it on….in….the paper and for a moment he thought he was just really high, but considering the things that happened in Orange County now, it wasn’t too hard to believe. “Wow. That’s pretty awesome. Can you take it back out?” He touched the picture of the pen, not really sure what he was expecting to feel. “I’m more or less a normal teenager, but there are vampires and witches and werewolves in mine.”
“I can. It’s like the same thing in reverse.” He drew the run again on the page and carefully reached in. “Clary showed me, but it took a few tries to get it right. This thing is almost like a magic wand.” He handed Jeremy the pen to show him it was whole again. “I could make a fortune in Vegas with this stuff.”
He nodded when Jeremy talked about the dreams. “I do have some vampires and werewolves in mine too. We have to try to keep the peace with them. Clary’s mom’s best friend is a werewolf, and he’s good, at least in the dreams. We were nearly trapped in a hotel of vampires though. It wasn’t a good scene.” He knew he didn’t want to be normal, and he did like this hero kind of thing. “Do you think you will turn into something maybe?”
Jeremy shrugged, “I don’t know. My sister’s boyfriend and his brother are vampires in the dreams and one of her best friends is a vampire. Her other best friend is a witch and another friend is a werewolf.” Jeremy took the pen, looking it over then handed it back to Jace, “I don’t really want to become a vampire or werewolf. Would be kind of cool to be able to do magic though.” And considering the fact that Jeremy had a crush on Bonnie in the dreams made him a little more curious about magic than if he didn’t.
“We do have a grand warlock. It’s my cousin’s boyfriend. I thought that was kind of funny. He’s perfect for the job. Magnus is a different kind of guy. We both do some modeling on the outside too, and we’ve had shoots together. In my dreams, he’s really colorful.” He flashed another huge grin, taking the pen back. “I wouldn’t want to be a creature either. I like being a shadowhunter. Since these things started, I’ve been taking some martial arts courses to get better. You should come sometime, if you are into working out and stuff.”
“That’s pretty cool.” Jeremy wondered what the difference between a warlock and high warlock were, but he figured it just meant one was more powerful than the other or something. “Yeah, maybe. That wouldn’t be a bad idea.” Taking a martial arts class would give Jeremy something else to do and considering all the crazy stuff that happened, it probably wouldn’t hurt to know how to defend himself. He was glad that he’d randomly stopped in the music store now and was enjoying talking to Jace, so he decided he was going to stay a little longer.
