Rating: TBD
Status: In Progress
Roy had driven Lian over to his parents’ house after picking her up from school then headed back to his house to get ready for his night with Darcy. His parents lived a little over an hour and a half away now, so on his way home, he picked up the things he would need to make dinner and got home in plenty of time to shower before he needed to start cooking. Roy hadn’t celebrated Valentine’s Day in a while. He’d dated on and off over the last ten years, but he hadn’t wanted to bring women in and out of Lian’s life when she was little. Now, she was ten, almost eleven and she clearly liked Darcy and Roy liked Darcy, so he didn’t have to worry about her being around Lian.
In fact, Roy liked Darcy so much, he had an obnoxiously big flower arrangement sent to her at Stark Industries. He was looking forward to hearing what she’d thought of them. When dinner was almost ready, he shot Darcy a text, asking if she was on her way over.
When Darcy had received her obnoxiously big flower arrangement at work, she had laughed. It was really sweet, even if it was a bit over the top. She didn’t mind it that much though. She really liked Roy. This was going to be her first Valentine’s Day with him, and her first one with an actual date. After she got home from work, she changed her clothes and got ready for the actual date. They hadn’t had a real weekend together without Lian being there. She really liked Lian actually, which was kind of a surprise to her. Most of the time kids hated her. But Lian seemed to like her well enough.
After texting him back, she headed to his house. This was going to be a nice weekend. She was really looking forward to it. She knocked on his door a couple minutes later and smiled. “Hey.”
Roy had just turned off the stove when he heard the knock and smiling, he went to answer the door, “Hey yourself.” He leaned in to kiss Darcy before moving aside to let her in, “So as you may have noticed, it is very quiet at the moment. Enjoy this moment cause you won’t hear that in this house very often.” It wasn’t that Lian was loud when she was home, but when she was home the tv was usually on, so there was more noise in the house.
Kissing him back, Darcy followed him into the house and closed the door behind her. “It’s really surprising. No television blaring. That’s a new one.” She set her things aside and took in the quietness of the house. “I’ll remember the house just like this for a while then. How are you fairing, being kidless for a while?”
Roy smiled and opened the oven to take the casserole out and set the dish on the stove top, “It’s kind of weird actually. I mean, we lived with my parents for so long then lived only a few streets away when we finally did move out, so now we’re kind of far and this is actually the first time Lian has been with them since we moved out here.” Before they’d moved to Orange County, when Lian was with his parents he usually wound up over there for one reason or another, so now that they were further away, it would be more difficult to find a reason to go there while Lian was there, “I think I’m doing alright though. I only cried once.” He smirked at Darcy and took out two wine glasses, “Wine?”
“I guess we’ve got that in common. Except I was with my sister, and then I was on the streets for a while myself.” Then some other places here and there. Now she lived with Jane and that was much better than anywhere else she’d lived. So much better than her shitty sitter and her shitty parents and the shitty streets. “It’s nice that she’s spending time with them though.” She was sure that they missed her. At least she hoped so. Parents were kind of lame, but she was biased. “I’m proud of you for only crying once. Yeah sure, wine’s good.”
Roy hated to think of Darcy living out of her car and bouncing around from place to place, so he was glad that she was finally living with someone who wouldn’t throw her out or move or what have you. He’d met Jane at Thanksgiving and he really liked her and was glad Darcy had a friend like her. “It was very embarrassing, You’re lucky you didn’t see it,” He winked at the brunette as he opened the bottle of wine and filled both glasses then handed one over to Darcy, “So, did you get any gifts from any admirers today?”
It was a god send that Jane had been put in her life and that she was willing to share space with Darcy. She was glad for it every day. It seemed like every six months she had to move into another place. Except now she didn’t think Jane would ever do that. And she was really glad that they all got along. It made things easier.”Yeah I would have laughed. No offense. I just can’t help the things that come out of my mouth.” She shrugged and tried to look apologetic about the whole thing. “As a matter of fact, some guy sent me a whole bunch of flowers.”
“Laughing at my misfortune? How rude.” Roy grinned as he took out two plates and utensils. When it came to Roy, sometimes it was hard to figure out if he was joking or not, so whether or not he had really cried after dropping Lian off at his parents’ place, was a mystery, but if asked, he would have told her that he hadn’t really. Setting the plates and utensils on the table, she smirked, “Do you know who this guy is? Is he your Valentine’s Day stalker?”
“Sorry, I’m quite sorry. I won’t laugh the rest of the night. And I’m not laughing now. Honest.” She put her hands up and made the girl scout sign. “Scout’s honor.” Hey if he cried, then more power to him. Darcy was so not one to judge any guy who cried, especially when they had kids or whatever. “I don’t think I’d call him a stalker. That sounds so ugly. No he just really likes me, I think. I mean he should.. I’m awesome. But he’s hot.. and kind of amazing so I’m thinking about going out with him.”
“Very awesome,” Roy agreed as he brought the casserole dish over to the table and set it on a trivet in the center of the table before sitting down across from Darcy, smiling, “Well he’s a lucky guy if you’re gonna go out with him.” Roy enjoyed the fact that he could joke around with Darcy like this, but what he enjoyed more was the fact that he was the hot guy that she was referring to.
Slipping into her chair, Darcy inhaled. The food smelled wonderful. She hoped it would taste half as good as it did. He was supposed to be a decent cook after all. “He’s really lucky. I mean just about the luckiest guy. I mean he’s going out with me. How much more lucky can a guy actually be?” She smirked a bit, glad that she could tease him a bit and herself at the same time. It made things easier that way. “It smells amazing by the way. It looks good too. So you’ve got two out of three so far.”
“He can’t believe how lucky he got,” Roy had, had to learn to cook and he’d found that he actually enjoyed it. A lot of his friends from high school still couldn’t do more than boil water, but Roy hadn’t wanted to constantly feed Lian fast food, so not only had he asked his mother to teach him a few things, but he’d googled recipes and watched various youtube videos and cooking shows. “I can assure you that it tastes amazing too.” He wasn’t sure if she was expecting him to dish it out or if she wanted to do it herself. Women were funny that way sometimes. Some got insulted if you gave them too much or too little, “Should I dish it out now or should we just continue to look at it?” He figured that was a safe way to find out.
“I feel pretty lucky too,” she agreed with a nod of her head and a small shy smile. An actual relationship that was going well was still a bit new to her. It was really good though. Darcy really liked him and since things were mutual, it was so much the better. “Well then, it looks like I’ve got to look forward to it.” Someone was a little smug about his food. “Oh uh yeah go ahead and dish it out. Why not?” Since he was standing there and gawking at her gawking at the food. She didn’t care much who did the things like that. If she had wanted to dish it herself, she would have done it. Honestly she didn’t care much either way.
Yes, Roy was a little smug about his cooking. He couldn’t help it. There were worse things that he could be smug about, so this really wasn’t that bad. “I mean, we could just stare at it and smell it all night, if you’d rather,” But even as he spoke, he was spooning some out onto both plates then settled in once both of them were served. “So, should we toast to something or would that be too corny even for us?”
It was a very valid reason for him to be a good cook. She wouldn’t want her kid being raised on a bunch of junk food either. Though knowing her, she probably would be pretty bad at it. Darcy was okay. She could make a very limited amount of things, and only for herself. Cooking for other people tended to get really messy. She was an expert helper though. “I would totally rather eat, thank you.” She smirked and set her plate back down once it had food upon it. “Uh.. I don’t think I’ve ever toasted. Just make it.. not corny.. like..” she picked up her glass. “To not getting killed by something weird in California this year.”
Roy laughed and lifted his glass. That hadn’t been quite what he’d meant, but considering it was them, he would go with it, “Alright. To not getting killed by something weird in California this year.” He clinked his glass with Darcy’s then took a sip, “Although, that leaves a lot of other places to die in weird ways this year.” She’d left that one wide open and he couldn’t resist.
“Hey remember when all you had to worry about in California was fires and earthquakes? Those were the days?” Well if he had a better toast, she was listening. Darcy didn’t know if he wanted to make it too sappy. She smirked and shook her head a little. “You’re ridiculous. But in a very good way.” She rather liked that about him. “What do you want to toast to?”
“Ah yes, the good ole days of earthquakes.” Roy laughed, still holding out his glass. Darcy wasn’t the first person to tell him that he was ridiculous, but when she said it, it made him smile, because he was happy that he could entertain her and that she didn’t find him annoying, which had happened quite a few times in the past. “Why don’t we risk being completely completely corny and toast to our first Valentine’s Day.” His brows rose slightly as he waited for her response.
All kinds of people called her ridiculous too. And she meant it with a great deal of affection, truth be told. It wasn’t bad to be ridiculous. She probably annoyed more people than he had. And she was all too happy to return the favor and make him laugh. Darcy just liked being around him. He made her laugh too. “All right, I think I can handle that. To our first Valentine’s Day. Cheers.” She smiled and clinked her glass with his and then took a sip. “This food is amazing. You are a pretty damn good cook.”
Roy grinned and took a sip of his wine after the toast then got busy eating, “Why thank you. Stick with me and there will be many more home cooked meals in your future.” Roy liked the idea of cooking more for Darcy and thought it would be quite nice to have her around more often, but they had only recently started dating so there was no way he was going to take a step like asking her to move in or anything like that, but he’d like it if she was around more often.
