Rory wasn’t sure what to expect from this meeting with Amy. He’d dreamt of her three different times now and could understand why he loved her in the dreams and why he wanted to marry her, but he didn’t know what it all meant. Did it mean that they were supposed to be together? Was it just one possibility of how his life could be? He wasn’t sure and there was the fact that he was attracted to Valerie too that he had to figure out. He was glad that he had met Mickey and found out that he also dreamt of traveling with The Doctor, otherwise he didn’t know who he would have talked to after him and Amy had decided to meet up.
Reaching the coffee shop they had decided upon, Rory went inside, glancing around to check for Amy, knowing exactly what she looked like from the dreams.
Amy had arrived a bit early, purchased a sparkling latte, and settled in a seat by the window. She sat quietly, a little nervous about what might happen when she and Rory came face to face. Would they fall in love, like in the dreams? Would she know him right off the bat, like it was destiny? Or would it just be two friends meeting for the first time? It was nerve-wracking. She hadn’t told John she was coming here to meet Rory. She hadn’t told anyone. And now she was regretting that.
When Rory finally spotted Amy, he couldn’t help but stare at her for a moment. She looked exactly like she did in the dreams and for a moment he felt like he was in said dreams. Once he was over the initial shock of seeing her, Rory headed over to her table, “Amy?” Not that he had to ask since he already knew it was her.
Amy sat up a little when she heard her name. And she saw … Rory. Rory from her Dreams. It was bizarre to see him here, in the flesh. There was a part of her that was terrified that she was going to fall in love at first sight--but that worry faded when she saw him there. “Rory.” She said in response, breaking into a relieved smile.
As he came to stand in front of her, Rory wasn't entirely sure what he was supposed to do now. He knew that he should probably sit down and start with some small talk, but that didn't feel like enough. He had the urge to hug her or something more than just sit, but in the end he took the seat across from her, "Please tell me that this is as strange for you as it is for me?”
Amy gave a soft chuckle. She felt like standing up to meet him, but that would be a bit strange, wouldn’t it? She felt like she knew him. Intimately. Still, this was the first time they were meeting. “It’s strange. Really strange.” She admitted, then sighed. “So… Are you…” another laugh. “God, I don’t even know where to start!”
Rory had to admit, he was glad that this was as awkward for Amy as it was for him, “I know what you mean. I feel like I know you, but I don’t at the same time.” In the dreams, they’d been friends since they were children. He knew that much, but he didn’t have those memories. Still, it was strange to meet someone that he already knew things about. “How many dreams have you had?” It seemed like a good place to start.
She felt the same way. And it was a relief to her, too, to know that he thought he knew her, even though he didn’t. “Um… a lot.” Amy said. “Too many to count, really. I’ve dreamed years worth, both before, after, and during our adventures with the Doctor.” She admitted. “I don’t want to tell you too much about them. I don’t know if you’d believe me if I did.”
Rory was torn between wanting to ask about her dreams and not wanting to know. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to know, but he still wasn’t sure what they meant in relation to Amy and how it would affect them in the real world. “I’ve only had four. When we met The Doctor. Venice. The one where we had to figure out which was the dream world and which was the real world and the most recent one took place in 2020.” The aliens he’d seen in the dream so far were so fantastical that it could only be a product of the dreams, because his own imagination could never come up with something like them.
“You’ve got more coming. I don’t want to tell you too much about what’s to come. Spoilers.” Amy said. She broke into a little smirk at the thought of River. She actually tinged slightly pink along her cheekbones. “But it’s a wild adventure. I can try and explain things as you go along, if you’ve got questions. Unfortunately, our Doctor isn’t here. There’s a version of the Doctor here, but he’s… younger.”
“No, I wouldn’t expect you to tell me anything. I mean, it makes sense that you wouldn’t want to tell me before I find out for myself.” Sure Rory had tons of questions, but he understood why Amy wouldn’t want to tell him everything, “How long have you been dreaming?” He was mostly curious about how long he’d be having the dreams.
“Uh…” Amy frowned a bit and focused, trying to remember when her first Dream was. “I think it’s been… over a year now. Maybe eighteen months? Not quite.” She thought about it. She got married after Dreaming, and then separated several months later… and her divorce should be finalized soon. “...definitely over a year.”
Rory’s brows rose slightly as he listened to Amy, “Over a year?” So he had over twelve months of these dreams to endure? Over a year of dreams of being with another woman while he had feelings for Valerie? This was going to be interesting. To say the least. “Are you still dreaming or have you finished?” How one could actually finish dreaming, he wasn’t entirely sure and somehow he thought that it couldn’t end well in the dreams if they ended.
“No, I haven’t finished yet. Though, I hear that people do. Finish, I mean. People have dreamed their own deaths, from what I understand. And it doesn’t make them die in real life. A lot of other things have come through the dreams. Objects, too, not just memories. The TARDIS is here. The Doctor’s got it. And I hear a woman got pregnant from her dreams.” Amy said.
Rory didn’t know exactly what to think about that last part and it caused him to wonder if Amy had dreamt about the baby in the picture he’d gotten, which he assumed was their baby in the dreams. Would the same thing happen to Amy? Now that would be somewhat awkward. Since he wasn’t exactly sure what to say about that, he decided to ask about the TARDIS instead, “The TARDIS is here? Have you seen it? Have you been inside it?” He might have to find The Doctor who was there and introduce himself.
“Yes, the TARDIS is here. The Doctor took a group of us on New Years back to 1928.” She responded, giving a little smile and a nod. “He’s quite brilliant, actually. I’m sure you’re going to love The Doctor here as much as we love him in the dreams.”
Now that was interesting. The Doctor was there, with the TARDIS and he was taking people places. Rory would be lying if he said that he wasn’t just a little bit intrigued. He was definitely going to have to find The Doctor after he had a few more dreams. He had to get used to all of this before going anywhere in the TARDIS, “That must have been a lot of fun. Different too. Did you get back here before or after the ball dropped?”
“You know, I honestly don’t remember.” Amy said, flushing a little and breaking into a bright smile. “I was there with my boyfriend, John. We found a pub, so we were a bit sloppy for the return trip.”
Rory didn’t know why, when she said she had a boyfriend, he felt a slight pang of jealousy. The same one he’d felt in the dreams when Amy had seemed to be more interested in The Doctor than in him, her fiance. “That must have been nice.” It was strange to feel like this, considering he had a bit of a crush on Valerie. “Having someone there with you, not being drunk of course.”
“Oh yeah, it was nice.” Amy said, nodding. She could tell that there was some strange emotion there, even if she wasn’t absolutely certain what it was. It caught her off guard, though she probably would have reacted similarly if he’d said he had a girlfriend. After all, they were in love in their dreams. And the dreams were so real.
“Anyway, you should come along some time. I’ll make sure the Doctor knows you’re here. Even though he’s from before our time, I’m sure he’d love to meet you.”
“If he’s from before our time, how’d you know who he was?” Rory knew about the whole regeneration thing from the dreams, so he was aware that the Doctor in his dreams hadn’t always looked like that. “I’m like to meet him too, but it’s got to be a little strange, meeting people who know you, but you don’t know.” While he wanted to meet the man, he didn’t want to make him feel uncomfortable or obligated or anything.
“I just… knew. I mean, he’s not our Doctor. But he’s close.” Amy said, smiling almost wistfully. “He doesn’t know you. Not really. And you don’t really know him, either, you know. You know the future him.”
Rory nodded as he listened. He thought he had it figured out, but it was still a lot to take in at one time, “I’ll admit, I should think that all of this is completely mad, but for some reason, I don’t.” Were it not for the fact that Rory had dreamt of Amy before he’d even met her, he might have been able to chalk the dreams up just being strange dreams, but now there was The Doctor who had the TARDIS and those were a little harder to explain away, but oddly enough, he didn’t want to.
“Well, if you’ve been having Dreams, then… I’m sure the Dreams make almost anything seem a little less mad than it would seem to an ordinary person.” Amy said, breaking into a little smile. “You know where to find me if you should have any questions, right? I mean… if you ever Dream of anything weird that you want to talk about?”
Rory nodded, “I do. Thank you. It’s actually nice to know that there is someone else having the same dreams.” If not a little awkward, because of the nature of their relationship in the dreams as opposed to real life.
Amy nodded. “I know. It’s nice to have you here. I mean, even if it’s a little weird? It’s still… nice.” Comforting. To know that they weren’t alone in this. Neither of them had to face any of on their own.
