Where: Napa area

Rose was loving every minute of their adventure so far. The drive up had been rather long, but they had rotated driving shifts so she was able to sleep through some of it. Most of the drive had been rather boring to look at, just flat land with a few acres of trees here and there. They stopped at fast food and sit down restaurants a like, Rose enjoying the people watching. There were families on their way down to Disneyland, grizzly truckers who looked like they hadn’t stepped out of their trucks for days. It all brought a smile to her face. It may have been a small step, but she was finally going on a vacation.
Once they had arrived in Northern California, the scenery finally changed. They drove through Oakland and she had wanted to drive through San Francisco, but John had informed her that would put them further from their destination. Maybe they would be able to visit on their way home.
Napa Valley was beautiful. The grapes fields were bare, but it was still breathtaking. They checked in to their hotel, a winery with a great view of the valley. Their days had been spent wine tasting, picnicking, and enjoying the small town atmosphere. They were coming up on the end of their vacation, a fact Rose wanted to forget. She was having such a nice time and found John to be an extremely charming and funny man at the same time.
It was the dreaded holiday that she was rather embarrassed that she had forgotten about. Still, John hadn’t seemed to mind that they were vacationing together on such a day, so she tried her best to not think of it.
“What do ya wanna do today?” she asked, laying on her bed with her chin propped up. “I think we may have toured all the local wineries here, we’d have to go a little further to Sonoma for something new.” They had given them a pamphlet when they had arrived, boasting of the various things to do in the Sonoma county. Still, many of them required more travel time and Rose wasn’t sure if she wanted to spend more time in a car when they would soon be back to the open road, heading home.
That they'd visited all the wineries around was a little obvious at this point, considering John was fairly certain that he'd spent at least the first few days half buzzed. Not that he minded - wine was sort of a favorite of his and walking around pretending to be overly sophisticated was sort of fun. Everyone believed them anyway: they had accents.
He considered the ceiling of their room from his own bed, ankles crossed, fingers clasped lazily together. "Hm," he said, before falling quiet again in more thought. It was Valentine's day and that was a little tricky because there was a fine line between platonic and, uh, not that depending on plans.
The Doctor had never been amazing at that fine line when it came to Rose, anyway. He liked poking at it, toeing it until it blurred completely and everyone was a little confused. "No more driving," he said finally. "We'll be doing enough of that soon. Dinner, maybe? Or ooh, room service and films?" That was indulgence at it's finest.
“Brilliant! I love that idea!” Rose snuggled back onto her bed again, arms crossed behind her head. It actually sounded perfect. “Which do you wanna choose tonight? Movie or dinner?” Rose’s mind was wandering away, the thought of a night in fading to the back. While it was Valentine’s and things were strictly platonic between the two of them, she still wanted to do something for John. He had made one of her dreams come true and had dropped everything to go with her on her journey. True, the dream was a little on the smaller scale and, true again, he didn’t have much to drop, but the sentiment and thought was still there. She knew he liked bananas, but after that, it got a little sticky. Would he even appreciate a small token of her appreciation?
“Right then, I’m going to run down and pick up a bottle or two.” She said, sitting up suddenly, room service forgotten. “Be back in a jiff!” She threw him a smile before taking her exit and hurrying down the hall. What to get? Maybe something for the two of them to enjoy? The idea struck her and she hurried to the small shoppe they had at their hotel.
John, ever amused, only waved as she ran off -- one could never be blamed for wanting to head down to a little shop. Little shops were absolutely fantastic and not to be underestimated.
He flipped through the helpful little hotel book that had listings and menus for restaurants, humming to himself as he did so and thinking absolutely pure thoughts about Valentine's and spending it with Rose. So pure.
He decided on a curry, made the call, and then hummed a little boredly to himself once that was through.
Rose made her way back to their room, a big brown paper bag in her arms. She shifted it in her arms as she got her room key out, nudging the door open with her hip.
“Hey,” she said, a little out of breath. “Sorry, took longer than I thought.” She set the bag on her bed and sat on the edge, patting the spot next to her. “So, I wanted to thank you for going on this trip with me and all that. I know it wasn’t too out of your way, but...I still appreciated it.” She gave him a shy smile before turning to rummage through her bag.
“And while this is a platonic Valentine’s day, I thought we could do with some traditional things.” She held up a big heart shaped box of chocolates. “John Smith, will you be my platonic Valentine?” She tried to make her face very serious, but there was a hint of a smile underneath it.
Rose Tyler was an awful woman. Probably because she was just amazing and brilliant and nearly irresistible. But still. Awful. For those reasons. John couldn’t not smile: a wide grin that was all teeth and crinkled crow’s feet. “Oh. Rose. Of course. I do.” Being playful was so easy.
Being serious could have been easy too. That’s why this was probably dangerous. Ah well. Too late now.
Rose beamed at his answer, tossing him the candy. “Good because I brought more presents! Chocolates, flowers, and of course,” she pulled out each item, handing them to him. “A nice bottle of wine.” She smiled, setting it on the bedside table between them. “Did you order something to eat? All that shopping made me hungry!”
The Doctor laughed at that, holding the flowers and chocolates -- dipping his head down with a secret smile just for himself. Rose had brought him roses. Of course she had.
“Twenty minutes on a curry,” he promised, “you pick the film, and I’ll put these flowers in water and we can call it a platonic date.”
