Elsa hadn’t left the house in a few days and had been trying to ignore texts and messages from her friends and family. She’d called in a replacement for the forecasts and had taken to wearing her gloves all the time. She’d thought she had been doing okay after her talk with Elphaba, the woman had convinced her not to run away from her loved ones but then at the weekend she’d turned her whole dining room into an ice rink just by tripping and catching herself on the wall.
It was getting out of control and she was afraid she was going to hurt somebody. She looked terrible, she hadn’t slept in a while and she couldn’t remember the last time she’d eaten anything. She didn’t know what to do.
Trying to get ahold of Elsa had proven more and more difficult. Kate was wondering if she’d done something or said something wrong, and when her texts and then her phone calls went unanswered, she took matters into her own hands and drove down to Elsa’s. The car was in, so Elsa had to be home. She knocked, hard.
The sound of knocking at the door made Elsa jump before she hesitantly went to answer it, whoever it was sounded insistent. Checking the spy hole she saw Kate and her heart leapt into her throat, she briefly considered not answering but that wouldn’t be fair and she had missed her girlfriend.
Taking a deep breath she opened the door with a small smile, standing back so Kate could enter if she wanted to.
“Hey..” Kate looked relieved when she saw Elsa. She took her in, half looking for any signs of injury or distress. She noticed the gloves and wondered at them, but said nothing as she stepped inside. “You’ve been harder to reach. I was about ready to build a bat signal.”
“Hey” Elsa said softly, apart from being tired and worn down from worry Elsa didn’t look much different than usual. “I’m sorry, I’ve just been a little distracted” she said, her hands nervously rubbing together.
Kate moved in to give her a hug. “I hadn’t realized how addicted I was to you until you stopped talking. Everything okay?”
For just a moment Elsa let herself forget everything and enjoy being in Kate's arms before she took a deep breath and moved back. "We can't do this anymore" she said, eyes cast downwards, "I'm sorry"
Elsa always felt so good in her arms. Kate had been mentally preparing herself for the next big step. Feelings. Emotions. ‘hey I kinda like you extra a lot can we use labels?’ But then the wind went right out of her sails. “...What? Do what anymore?” She lifted a hand and rubbed her own shoulder. “Is it the … night job I’ve been doing?”
Elsa shook her head, "No, I mean I do worry a lot but it's part of you, I know that. It's me Kate, I don't want to hurt you so I think it's better to stop it now. I care about you too much, I couldn't stand it if I hurt you"
“How are you going to hurt me?” She asked, furrowing her brow. Except by doing this. This thing that was the reason she hadn’t done a real relationship in so long. “Elsa, I can handle almost anything, but I don’t think…” she reached out and grabbed Elsa’s arm.
“Don’t!” Elsa cried trying to pull her arm back, she couldn’t help flashing back to her dream when Anna had done something similar causing her power reveal, “Please Kate” Elsa had tears in her eyes as she looked at the woman in front of her. She had known doing this would hurt but hadn’t been prepared for how much.
The red-head looked like she’d been physically slapped. “Okay. Okay.” She dropped her hand to her side and sighed. “Does this have to do with your dreams?” She’d get to the bottom of this, but thought that pushing Elsa too hard in the wrong way would only make things worse. That didn’t stop her from stepping a little closer.
Kate’s reaction made Elsa feel worse and she had to drag in a couple of deep breaths before she nodded, “I hurt my sister and I scared so many people. I’m a monster Kate. I just need to be alone, so I can’t hurt anybody else”
"Bullshit. My sister... I've known monsters. You're nothing like the psycopaths Gotham City produces." Kate took another step. "You're sweet and kind and a little secretly naughty but you're not a monster, you're not evil."
Elsa knew she should move back but her body felt heavy and she couldn’t move, “You don’t understand” she whispered, looking down at her hands which were twisting together once more.''
Kate drew herself to her not unimpressive full height. A little too much of the Batwoman in her, but she was running out of patience and her heart was beating in overdrive in her chest. "Then make me understand. I'm not letting you go without a fight."
Realising how determined and stubborn Kate was Elsa closed her eyes for a moment before stepping back from Kate, “Just...stay there” she said before moving to the door where the coat rack stood. Removing her glove she wrapped her shaking hand around it, it didn’t take long for the ice to cover it. Her heart was pounding as she slowly turned to look at Kate, not noticing that the ice was now spreading along the ground working it’s way to turn the whole entryway into an ice rink.
"Oh..." Kate chewed her lip, watching the ice spread. "I had a dream like this the other night. He called himself Mr. Freeze and kept wanting to freeze Gothom. I gave him a compound fracture. But trust me you're nothing like him." She held her hand out to Elsa. "I'm not scared." Mostly.
Elsa shook her head at the hand, “I am” she said, “I can’t control it” she admitted before realising it was spreading faster than she had wanted and quickly put her glove back on.
Kate eyed the ice, wondering if gloves were actually enough to stop it spreading. "So you're what... an ice queen?" She edged closer. It was getting kind of chilly. "If you're trying to dump me you need to try harder."
The gloves weren’t enough to stop it, not with Elsa’s heightened emotional state right now the floor was slippery with ice though Elsa didn’t notice, just like the drop in temperature didn’t bother her either. “I guess that is what I am” she nodded, “I don’t want to Kate, the last thing I want is to lose you but it’s not safe. Can’t you see? I’d never forgive myself if I hurt you”
"Don't you think that's my decision to make? Elsa, I think I'm falling in love with you." Kate asked. Her foot skidded a little on the ice and she flailed her arm out almost ungracefully to maintain her balance. It was so slick that she grabbed onto Elsa.
Elsa opened her mouth to reply but as Kate’s words hit home she gasped, her head whirling as she acknowledged that she too was falling for Kate - truthfully already had. When Kate skidded Elsa reacted, reaching out at the same time as she was reached for. She had been worried about what would happen but amazingly, as she held Kate close, the ice began to recede. It was confusing for her but she was grateful for it.
"Hey, you caught me that time," Kate said, threading her arms around Elsa's neck. She couldn't help but flirt. "You're beautiful at this angel." Angel. Not Angle. Smooth, Kate!
“I caught you, but I caused you to fall” Elsa pointed out but couldn’t stop her lips twitching into a small smile at Kate’s flirting, she was very good at it.
Straightening, Kate smoothed back Elsa’s hair. “You might hurt me, but that’s okay. It happens. Even without magical powers we’re going to end up hurting each other on occasion just by being a couple. I’m not going to live in fear of a maybe.”
“It’s not okay” Elsa insisted, though she leaned into Kate’s touch. “It’s not like saying something that you might regret later, I’m dangerous I could seriously injure you” the thought was distressing and a chill settled in the air once more but didn’t touch Elsa or Kate. Somehow, without knowing it Elsa was protecting Kate from her power.
"I've been seriously injured before," Kate said. She started to unbutton her shirt, and pulled it aside a little to show a scar over her heart. "This..started coming in recently. In my dreams I was stabbed in the heart. I spent years recovering." She took Elsa's hand and put it over the scar. "I trust you. And even if you did hurt me, I'd forgive you."
Elsa gasped when Kate told her she’d been stabbed in the heart, she truly hated the thought that someone would hurt this incredible woman. “I don’t think I could forgive myself” she said softly, her gaze focused on the scar as her fingers stroked it like they could take away the pain she must have felt.
Kate shivered lightly, mostly from the touch on the scar. She’d been afraid it would show up one day, and then it had. She decided not to mention the blood that had come with it, for Elsa’s sake. It had magically healed up right away. She looked at Elsa’s face, and into her eyes, seeing the fear there. “I don’t want to give up, Elsa. But if you want me to go, I will.”
“I don’t want you to go” Elsa confessed, “As reckless and selfish as that is. I don’t want to be alone” It might be safer and it might be wiser but now she was standing here with Kate in her arms she knew her heart would break if she let her go.
A grin slowly formed over Kate's lips, and she lifted her hands to Elsa's face and stroked her hands through her hair. "I'm not gonna leave you. You don't need to worry about that. I ... danger is what I do." Phew, good catch.
“I’m not sure whether that is reassuring or not” Elsa said, moving closer to Kate, “But I’ll take it for now” she added her lips moving against her girlfriends before she kissed her.
Relieved, Kate kissed her back, a little hesitantly at first. She wondered if Elsa’s breath would be cold, or if it would mist from the warmth of her own.
Elsa’s lips were a little cool but everything else was normal, she had been hesitant too but upon realising she wasn’t going to turn Kate into an icicle she deepened the kiss.
“Why don’t I warm you up,” Kate suggested against Elsa’s mouth. She grinned. Oh the puns were going to be impossible to resist. Her hands slid down the blonde’s back and she didn’t wait for a response before continuing the kiss.
Oh dear, there really were going to be a lot of hot and cold jokes now but maybe it would help Elsa not to worry about her power so much. She wasn’t worrying right now with Kate’s lips against her own and their tongues sliding against each other.
Then Kate didn’t have any more words to say.
