Amy loved Baxter Bakery. She went for the sparkling lattes, even though they weren’t the nonfat variety that she really should have been drinking. But it was a nice treat once a week or so to grab a sparkling latte and a cookie on her way home from the gym.
That’s where she was today, sitting by the window, holding the steaming hot latte between her hands and grinning down at the sight of her heart-shaped cookie with the pink icing. It was going to be a really good day.
Now that Rose was no longer employed at Starbucks, she knew where her new coffee junction would be located. Baxter’s was not only a local coffee shoppe, but it offered a better array of drinks, snacks, and environment. She had to admit, those sparkling lattes had a nice taste and texture to them, she couldn’t so no to them now!
Once she had made her purchase, she glanced around, wondering where she would post up for the morning. She saw an empty table by the window and walked over, setting her cup down first. She glanced outside, sure today was going to be a beautiful day. Her hands cupped the warm drink between them and she inhaled the smell. Brilliant.
She glanced at the girl sitting across from her, then back down at her coffee. Eh, what the heck. “Looks like it’s going to be a beautiful day.”
Amy looked up from her drink and broke into a warm smile at the gal sitting just one table over from her. She nodded. “I much prefer this weather to the rain. I mean, when it’s cold and crisp, that’s the way it should be. Then again, maybe that’s my roots talking.” Her slight Scottish drawl came through in her voice. “What are you drinking?”
Rose nodded in agreement. She loved the rain, but only when she could be indoors wrapped up in a large blanket, a cup of tea at the ready. Today was a day to savor and enjoy every second of. She grinned, noticing the accent and thinking of the strange coincidence. “I’m guessing from your accent you’re from Scotland? How long have you been over here?”
She glanced down at her drink, watching as the light caught the sparkles. “Their signature sparkling latte. My friend introduced me to them and I have to admit, I’m one of their biggest fans now!”
“Over a year now.” Amy said, then broke into a grin. “Almost two. Just long enough to have been married and divorced, upset a photographer, gain a stalker, and decide it’s time to switch careers.” She chuckled softly. “Or, at least, to add more to my resume.”
“Oh, yeah! The sparkling lattes. I have no idea how they get the milk to sparkle like that. Shimmer. Almost like it’s made out of Twilight Vampire Blood or something,” Amy said, then went a little pink. “God, I cannot believe I just made a Twilight joke.”
Rose couldn’t help but laugh, shaking her head as well. “Oh those books were terrible!” She glanced around the cafe, making sure no one else could overhear. She cupped her hand over her mouth, looking back at Amy. “But I did read them all!” She grinned, taking another sip.
“Would you like to join me?” she asked, nodding her head towards the empty chair across from her. “Better than speaking across tables! I want to hear more about your crazy life while you’ve been here!”
Amy chuckled, grinning brightly. “Oh, me, too. I couldn’t put them down! They’re like crack, or something.” She kidded. Not that Amy Pond knew what the real crack was like. She was about as straight laced as a body could be. After all, she had a doctor for a boyfriend. He wouldn’t put up with that crack nonsense.
Amy gave a little nod, and slipped from her chair into the chair directly opposite Rose’s seat. “Well… there’s not a whole lot to tell?” She said, though it was more of a question than an answer. Of course, it wasn’t true, either. Amy’d seen and done enough in the last couple of years to fill a soap opera for a decade.
Rose laughed, nodding her head. “They were terrible! But there was something about them that made me go through each one so fast!” She shook her head, knowing it was a sad thing to admit. At least there was someone else that understood her! “They’re not my usual taste of books though.” But then again, her tastes did dabble in the harlequin romances as well.
Rose blushed, realizing that asking to hear about ones dirty little secrets wasn’t necessarily the most polite thing to do. “I didn’t mean to be rude about it!” she said, her hands playing with her cup. “I’d make it even and tell you some of my interesting stories but sadly I don’t really have anything.” She thought about it a moment, trying to think of something. “Nope! I really don’t have anything!
Amy gave a laugh. “That makes two of us with boring stories! How is that possible? We should get out there and do something fun. Something interesting! What do you think?” She said, perking up at the thought of an adventure with a new friend.
Rose laughed, nodding her head. “I think that sounds like a great idea! Maybe something that can put our dreams to the test!” Dreams...Rose wasn’t sure if they could actually do something that could compare to the dreams she had, but it would be fun to at least go out and do something she’d never done before.
“I’m Rose Tyler by the way,” she said, setting her cup down and extending her hand to shake.
“Oh, I dunno if anything we could do in this world could compare with my Dreams,” Amy said, breaking into a bright grin. She reached forward with her free hand and shook Rose’s. “I’m Amy. Amy Pond.” She nodded once, then released the woman’s hand. “So, you’ve got good taste in coffee, obviously, and a thirst for adventure. I can tell we’re going to be great friends.”
“Amy?” Rose squinted a little, the name ringing a bell. Oh! “Amy! Amy, you’re one of Team TARDIS!” She had said it a little louder than she had meant and she glanced away, looking back at her a little sheepishly. “Sorry, didn’t mean to get so excited about it, but we chatted over the Valarnet! I just started having dreams about the Doctor!”
Amy was surprised by the outburst, a little wide-eyed, and then gave a near guffaw of laughter. “Yes. Yes, I am.” She beamed. “Have you? That’s brilliant, Rose! You know the Doctor? Is he… glasses? Spikey hair? That’s the Doctor I know here in Orange County. My Doctor, the one in my dreams, is tall, with a chin, and a bow tie.” She said.
Rose’s eyes grew wide when Amy gave the description of the Doctor that was here. Well, not much but much more than anyone else had been willing to give her! “I haven’t met him here yet, just in my dreams,” she said, smiling as she realized the funny saying. Yes, she was waiting for the man in her dreams, although it seemed he wouldn’t be here. This regeneration thing...she was still trying to wrap her head about it.
“I know the Doctor is here, but it’s not my Doctor. But I haven’t met him. Everyone seems to be keeping him from me for some reason.” It was strange to think that Amy knew the same Doctor, yet completely different at the same time. The idea that there could be more than one Doctor at a time seemed impossible, a notion Rose hadn’t even thought of. “Martha said the Doctor here is her Doctor...strange how we each have one innit?” She grinned, drinking the last of her coffee.
Amy nodded. She understood. The Doctor who was here wasn’t her Doctor either, but he was a wonderful guy, and she was absolutely thrilled to know him. She gave a little sigh and a nod. “Yeah, it’s a bit weird. I think… I think maybe The Doctor changes over time. I dunno. But he’s great, whoever he is. Both in the Dreams, and here in real life.”
“What has been happening in your dreams?” she asked, curious to see what it was like to be a companion to a different Doctor. “I’ve traveled outside the world, back in time, and helped save it.” Was it possible that each companion had done something of the same effect?
Amy laughed. “You, too? I’ve done all of that. Let’s see, I met Van Gogh. There were Vampires in Venice. Oh, and I had a baby. That turned into a glob of plastic. And then became my best friend growing up. And don’t get me started about the Pandorica.” She said, shaking her head a bit. “We should write all of this down.”
Rose laughed, nodding her head. Her eyes grew wide when she heard about all the other adventures Amy had had as well. “Wow! I wonder what else will happen with my adventures!” It seemed like the possibilities were endless, especially when it came to the Doctor.
“How long have you been having dreams?” Her hands played with her empty glass, smiling at Amy’s suggestion. “Funny, my friend was just telling me I should write down my dreams. She’s a writer and we were talking about what would make a good story.”
“Oh man. I don’t know. I’ve dreamed an entire lifetime’s worth, I think. They started right after I moved to the area and jumped onto Valarnet.” Amy responded. “...that’s interesting. Maybe we’re on a similar brainwave!” Amy said, grinning.
Rose laughed, giving a small shrug of her shoulders. “Everyone I’ve talked to when it comes to their dreams, it always happens when they live in the OC and start communicating on the Valarnet! It’s such a strange coincidence...I want to know what the connection is!”
“I really, really don't know,” Amy said, shrugging her shoulders. “I don’t know if anyone knows. People a lot smarter than I am have studied it, and still we have no answers.”
Rose frowned. This was what a lot of other people had told her, yet she found it hard to believe. “It has to be run by someone or some company though. I want to know if they truly meant for something like this to happen. Or if there’s something in the system that just happens!” She shook her head, wanting to find out. But if others had studied it, looked into it, what chance did she have?
She looked up at Amy, smiling. “Maybe it’s better that way. No one knowing.”
“It does relieve some of the pressure, yeah.” Amy said, then shrugged her shoulders gently. Her phone buzzed and she pulled it up to look at it. A text message. “Oh, I really should go. I’ve lingered long enough. But here.” She drew out a business card with her contact information on it. “If you ever want to meet up on purpose. Send me a note. We can have more Doctor talk.”
Rose took the card, smiling. “Of course! It was nice to put a face to the name.” She tucked the card into her pocket, giving her new friend a little wave. As she was done with her coffee she would have left as well, but there was such a nice atmosphere at the cafe she didn’t want to leave quite yet. Instead, she stared out the window, thinking how the Valarnet brought all sorts of people together.
